I know this is a bit of a cheek, but I'm curious to know, ok maybe to see where I fall to in the range of answers.
Are people generally on the lower side, higher side, in the middle and are you happy, trying to lose, trying to gain, counting calories or couldn't care less?

OP posts:

40 but this time last year it was 56 so I'm on the right track 🙂

@SlashBeef That’s absolutely amazing, well done!

BMI about 40-43, haven’t checked for a while. I hate it but find it very difficult to lose weight. I know all the theory but my mind overrules my brain. I go to the gym but really need to get on top of the eating again. New start for various reasons coming soon.

Fluffygreenslippers · 06/02/2023 14:15

I will tell you that at my absolute lowest weight, when I was taking diet pills & only eating 250-500 calories a day my BMI was 27. Still overweight by the charts standards. I could fit into children's clothes and a woman’s 6. Looking back at pictures I’m so gaunt I look like a spider.
I fucking hate BMI.

Accept it doesnt - I just changed my ethnicity and it still gave me exactly the same data.

Also gives the same reading if I change my fitness level. The only thing it changed for that was how many calories I needed to get down to this magical number that apparently is best for everyone.

There is a separate scale for Asian people. Values tend to be lower. I don’t know about other ethnicities.

Everanewbie · 06/02/2023 14:16

@Rebel2023 so you might extend your threshold to 26/27 being your upper threshold, but what I'm trying to say is that some dismiss BMI altogether because of the Cartman defense, "I'm big boned" which does them and everyone else a disservice.

PaperFun · 06/02/2023 14:18

Mine is 18.7. I would love to be stronger and more muscly and fitter, with a bigger BMI. I am short with big boobs and all my weight is in the middle.

The odd thing is I am in my mid-fifties and only a couple of pounds bigger than when I was 18. But I look so much bigger and flabbier. The distribution of fat has changed so much. I guess having kids didn’t help either.

Yeah definitely
At BMI 29 I am a size 14, BMI 34 a 16 so you can see how much my weight has to change to drop a size!
Just my build, and my weight... pass. I exercise a lot and eat ok but have hashimotos

It changes the text and gives you info if you are more at risk due to ethnicity factor.
Risks for many other than white start in lower bmi.

Exactly but let’s not let facts get in the way, eh?

Seasonofthewitch83 · 06/02/2023 14:22

The NHS BMI website seems to say every ethnicity other than white needs to have a BMI of 27.5 or lower. What a crock of shite.

Using BMI as a tool is particularly harmful to black women.

DiddyHeck · 06/02/2023 14:22

Everanewbie · 06/02/2023 14:11

BMI is a bit blunt, but its a good starting point. Your bullseye BMI might need tweaking either side but it isn't going to be 5-10 points off.

Whenever BMI is mentioned here there is always a poster saying about how they are muscular meaning that for them, 33 is ok. My understanding is that you need to be a like a full on body builder for that sort of thing to apply so I think there is a bit of Ostrich'ing going on to be honest.

Reading Mumsnet over the last 15 years or so, it's nearly always overweight posters who argue that BMI isn't worth bothering about.

Hartlebury · 06/02/2023 14:25

YABU to ask a question about a meaningless, poorly designed system which automatically makes people apologise or over explain if they're lower or higher than 'average' and not even offer yours as a starter for ten.

Everanewbie · 06/02/2023 14:28

@DiddyHeck unfortunately I am an overweight poster, well actually obese although I never really thought of myself as that until i used the calculator, which was an eye opener. I spent years pretending it was ok as I was always 'solidly built' and 'stocky' but the reality is that just because there are so many overweight people around me, it doesn't make me any healthier.

Any day now I'll break through to just plain old overweight, and then onwards and, well downwards, to a healthy weight.

I'm finding it an interesting balance between being confident but understanding that acceptance is accepting higher risk of so many nasties that I really actually do have control over.

I agree the OP should probably have shared their details too, but they haven't made anyone do anything.

Agreed. I was just thinking that if the posters moaning had a healthy BMI, they wouldn’t be so offended by the concept. A lot of people are just in denial.

taperjogger · 06/02/2023 14:40

BadClown · 06/02/2023 12:30

40, but I’m actively losing weight, just bloody slowly. I hate dieting or restricting what I eat. Everyone says it’s not about that, but for me it needs to be. I dislike all healthy foods, and have an NT child, so when kids are in bed I like to sit and eat rubbish food and watch crap on tv. I’m trying, but every meltdown, every school refusal, every difficult day, I comfort eat.

Can totally relate this.

Ghostlight · 06/02/2023 14:47

14.8 - I am actively ill and have a medical condition that causes this, I'm currently up from 13.6 and my goal for this year is to get up to 16.

I don't think bmi is always helpful- my brother has the same conditions as me and has always stuggled to gain weight- he developed a scoliosis in his teens- physically lost height due to his curvature - stayed the same weight but gained almost three points on the bmi scale

I am Asian and have no problem accepting my BMI needs to be 23 or lower to avoid diabetes. Given my entire family is full of slim diabetics.

I dont think it helps me personally to dismiss BMI as racist. It's a blunt tool but still a useful tool.

Pigeonchested · 06/02/2023 15:01

22 - bag in the middle of normal. People always tell me I am skinny, which is interesting as I’m clearly not, I’m where I ‘should’ be.

whatsup00 · 06/02/2023 15:12

Whoa bedbouncer, that's a big difference, are your knees feeling better? Hope so.

I'm 18.5, I want to be BMI 20 which is always where I've felt the best/healthiest.

I have really pushed food to even maintain this. I just have no appetite whenever I feel stressed, to the point I have to force food. My weight has slowly gone down since about March 2021. When you are just not hungry or food turns your stomach it is really hard to gain weight. I feel the cold worse at this weight and it makes winters v uncomfortable. I also don't feel very healthy.

  1. I’m morbidly obese. My weight is literally double what it should be for my height.

I do have a healthy BMI. I have a healthy waist ratio.
I still look overweight and still think BMI isn't worth bothering about.

ResearchMakesMeCry · 06/02/2023 15:24
  1. My diet is 80% lentils, 20% butter

But @Seasonofthewitch83 , if you have as you said up thread, a BMI of 40 surely you can tell by looking that you are carrying too much weight.

You don't need to rely on a BMI calculator to tell you that.

It might be a bit more cloudy if your BMI is 30 or there or thereabouts but at 40, I would advise you, from a health and fitness stance, to get the weight down a little.

40 BMI is not good no matter your race or your sex. My sister was around this-she was out of puff quicker than I was and also _TMI alert-found it difficult to wipe her own backside as her arms couldn't get to the desired area.

That isn't what I am discussing?

I am sure your sister would love the fact you share that she cant wipe her own arse properly as some kind of 'gotcha' to people on the internet though. Gotta hate those unhygienic fatties though, eh?
