‘Needs’

Anyone else getting fed up of the huge overuse of the word ‘needs’ on here, or am I just grumpy tonight 😆

It just feels like every tiny want or preference is labelled a ‘need’ for extra clout, and it feels so dramatic.

When they really mean ‘wants’ I’d agree.

SavoirFlair · 05/02/2023 20:20

No I totally agree.

I just mentally add it to the list alongside

• Posters who use “alot” as a whole word (makes my fucking teeth itch)

• People who say everything is “vile” when they just mean “ugly”. Curtain rails are not “vile” . Savile and Glitter are vile.

People who use “IYSWIM” after a perfectly clear statement. Just stop please.

CowSnail · 05/02/2023 20:58

Could you give an example?

“I can’t cope, I need a break” - YABU
“I need a jaffa cake” - YANBU

AnotherAppleThief · 05/02/2023 20:59

'Talk me down'.

Awful and dramatic phrase.

Choconut · 05/02/2023 21:08

I haven't seen this at all. You'll have to give examples if you want people to know what you're talking about.

"Vile" and "grim" are words I didn't know until I joined MN. English isn't my first language but I've lived here for over 15 years and still waiting to hear them in real life! So overused on here.

Anon300 · 05/02/2023 21:24

It's not something I've noticed.

The infantilisation of adult children is what stands out to me.

That and 'alot.' Pretty much everything is vile as well. It's weirdly fascinating to read.

I agree - it’s very odd. I’m a lawyer with two DCs, married, mortgage etc and there are posters on here referring to people my age as boy/girl and saying how we’re too young for real relationships or having DCs, etc. It’s really strange. Along with the ever offensive “are you young?” question for anyone who’s incredibly stupid, dramatic and unreasonable as if they don’t recognise how offensive it is to assume that being an arsehole is something reserved for the young.
