To park on my drive out of pettiness?

Next door neighbour has recently started getting large amounts of parcels delivered. They have their own drive, and there’s loads of on street parking, but they’ve started parking on my drive to unload their van. I don’t usually park on my drive during the day, but it’s really bugging me that they haven’t asked, and keep parking on my drive, blocking my garage, without asking for permission. Last week I tried to pull onto the drive after the school run and they were there unloading the van. They smiled and said they’d only be a few more minutes, and then got back to work. It was obvious I wasn’t pleased, but I was blocking the road so had to drive around the block and by the time I returned they’d gone again. I’m not comfortable with confrontation, so I’ve started parking on my own drive, literally just to block them from doing it. Am I just being petty? Should I let them park there since I don’t really need to use it during the day?

And if you don't, you can just park on your drive. Why would you need to say anything to anyone about it?

This thread, I swear. And I thought the one where the woman was losing her shit at people who don't cut pizza her way was crazy...

I guess you could leave on your car on the drive 24x7 but I was assuming the OP used their car. If you do use it then when you come back ...

...park on your drive. If the neighbours use it so much that you can't always get on to it, put up a bollard, like many people have suggested. It's your driveway.

Flaming Nora, and I thought I was an overthinker. You don't need any conversations with anyone or any tussles with your conscience to decide to park on your own driveway for any bloody reason you choose.

Choconut · 05/02/2023 21:18

I don't think there's any right or wrong, do what's best for you OP. If you want to park on your drive to prevent them parking there then do it. If you're not bothered enough by it to park there yourself then just leave it. You shouldn't have driven off when they were blocking it though, you should have sat there and scowled until they were out the way even if you were in the road - it wasn't you blocking things and if other people got pissed off you can tell them your drive is blocked and to speak to the neighbour who is the one blocking it.

If you'd prefer to pend money on a bollard and have the hassle of putting it up/down I guess your choice. Seems like. lot of effort and expense to go to but pays your money takes your choice. Me, I'd just ask the to stop.

Yes, that is indeed their choice. They don't need to discuss it with anyone and if you consider it somehow inferior to whatever you'd choose to do, well, they've got what they want and so have you. Everyone's a winner.

You don't need to have any conversations or make any justifications for parking on your own driveway.

I can't believe this isn't self-evident.

T1Dmama · 05/02/2023 22:20

It’s your drive, use it/don’t use it - your choice…
I get annoyed that delivery vans reverse into my drive and use it as a turning point. Don’t mind when they’re delivering to my house, but not other peoples !
I think it’s as cheeky as hell to use your drive without asking.
when they said ‘we’ll only be a few more minutes’ you should’ve said ‘sorry I need my driveway, please move.’

Ineedtorunaway · 05/02/2023 22:49

So what if their car/van leaked oil on your drive? Would you ask them to clean it up? Park on your drive until they get the message not to be so entitled

Stewball01 · 06/02/2023 06:53

I think it's a bloody cheek. Park in your own parking.

Ineke · 06/02/2023 08:35

So if there is lots of parking at the back, why don’t your neighbours do what you do, park one or two of their cars round the back, so that their drive is free for the delivery of pallets etc. this way they are not relying on your drive being empty, and don’t inconvenient anyone except themselves having to move their other cars round the back.

Ineke · 06/02/2023 08:37

Meanwhile, lock your own drive either with your own car or a bollard until they get the hint, if not, they will eventually feel they have some sort of god given right to do this.

T1Dmama · 06/02/2023 08:40

Do they not have their own driveway?

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 06/02/2023 08:42

I'm petty enough that I would consider buying something cheap JUST to have it parked in the drive all the time....

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 06/02/2023 08:43

Or... do you have a friend that needs to leave a second car somewhere? Or a boat? 😬

WTAFhappened123 · 06/02/2023 09:14

Get cones or a driveway security post

ThisIsWednesday · 06/02/2023 09:45

If there is one thing I've learned from this thread, it's not whether it's right or wrong to park in your own driveway in order to stop CFers, it's the sheer volume of Mumsnet users that utterly lack the ability to read and comprehend simple, well explained posts..

"It's not inconveniencing you!"

*OP explained that she was unable to get on her drive because they were using it, shrugged and made her wait and she was forced to drive round a one way system just to keep the road clear. One inconvenience is more than enough.
*
"Why don't you use your drive all the time anyway?"

*OP explained she parks round the back of the house on the road during the day because the drive is on a inconvenient one way system.
*
"It's not confrontational to just speak to the neighbours! You're a wuss!"

*OP is alone. The neighbours however ARE confrontational and have shown themselves to be aggressive to people having any issues with them.
*
"You shouldn't be blocking a road when you have a drive!"

*The parking OP uses in the day has plenty of space. Not every road has limited, tight parking. No one else is needing it and it's perfectly legal.
*
"Why are they using your drive? It doesn't make sense"

*They have vehicles on their drive already and instead of inconveniencing themselves by playing swap the cars for deliveries, they roll up OP's drive to get near their own door. It's not that difficult to comprehend.
*
OP, you're a single mum. I'm guessing having a fence and gate installed is possibly not financially doable? I think you should park on your drive until they get the hint. Park low down too so they can't park up behind you.

Personally IDGAF so I would block the road until they moved causing a jam. Or better yet, I'd pull into my drive behind them and not answer the door when they wanted out. But I have cctv here and would be okay with calling the police out on nasty people. I'm also not alone. Not that my DH would be much use tbf. What's a nice way of saying wet lettuce? Is there a nice way of saying it?

After tolerating a string of similar incidents, @ZeldaWillTellYourFortune I very nearly did!!

For what? It’s not illegal to run a business from your home

If its a rented accommodation it is illegal to run a business from there

why is it illegal to run a business from a rented house? Can you show me a link to the legislation/laws on this please?

Kaftanesque · Yesterday 17:50

I did lose it the other day when a huge van blocked me in and the driver was rude when I told him I had an appointment to get to and please vould he move before he started unloading.

I did Amazon deliveries for a while and sometimes, it's difficult not to block someone, but if I was asked to let someone out, I just did it and apologised.

A DPD twat blocked me in a few weeks ago, he parked in the middle of the road as I was getting out of my door. I wound my window down and knocked on his, he just glared at me. I got out on the passenger side and said, "Come on mate, you could have rolled down a bit."

He sneered, "I was only a couple of minutes. I made a pretence of taking photos of him and his number plate and he said no more.

Personally, I'd have a security post installed at the end of my driveway, then continue to park wherever I want to but the cf neighbours wouldn't be able to use my driveway when the post is up.

It's not illegal to run a business from a rental property. However, you have to have the landlords permission in writing as it is a variation of the tenancy agreement and the business must be one that can be reasonably carried out at home.

^ Exactly, why anyone would spend money and create inconvenience for themselves rather than just saying get off my drive is beyond me :)

Bugger them off or invite friends to park on their drive when they visit you.
