To park on my drive out of pettiness?

Next door neighbour has recently started getting large amounts of parcels delivered. They have their own drive, and there’s loads of on street parking, but they’ve started parking on my drive to unload their van. I don’t usually park on my drive during the day, but it’s really bugging me that they haven’t asked, and keep parking on my drive, blocking my garage, without asking for permission. Last week I tried to pull onto the drive after the school run and they were there unloading the van. They smiled and said they’d only be a few more minutes, and then got back to work. It was obvious I wasn’t pleased, but I was blocking the road so had to drive around the block and by the time I returned they’d gone again. I’m not comfortable with confrontation, so I’ve started parking on my own drive, literally just to block them from doing it. Am I just being petty? Should I let them park there since I don’t really need to use it during the day?

As they are aggressive people, I would not approach them. I would park on the drive every time from now on.
Asthey are CFs, they might even challenge you about that which would be funny.

Benjispruce4 · 04/02/2023 13:14

If you have a drive, why aren’t you parking on it to leave the road clear for others?

BadClown · 04/02/2023 13:32

@MorelloKisses its their van, I have no idea what they’re getting, I’ve only seen pallets of stuff but it’s covered. I’d love to know though!

@Benjispruce4 I’ve answered this multiple times. There’s loads of on street parking, I’m not blocking anything. I don’t park on my drive during the day because it’s inconvenient due to a one way street

Park on your drive daily for a few months - look into fences and gates if possible to fence in your drive.

LookItsMeAgain · 04/02/2023 13:57

BadClown · 03/02/2023 22:18

I know I’m allowed to park there, my question is if it’s being petty if I choose to? I don’t usually use the drive during the day, and only want to because they’re using it without my permission?

Have you told your insurance company that you have a driveway and you park your car there?

If you have, they will assume that you mean whenever you are at home, you park your car in your driveway, not just at night or when you feel like it. They will expect your car to be parked off road when you're parked at home.

So, park on your driveway.

If they kick off about it, say that you checked with your insurance company as it was coming close to renewal time (you don't have insurance discs on your car windows anymore in the UK right, so they won't know when your insurance renewals time is) and you checked and this is now what you're going to be doing.

If they need to unload their van(s) they can do it around the back where you have now ceased to park.

OhClunge · 04/02/2023 09:58

At a wild guess I'd say because it's not theirs to use and it's rude

@OhClunge

but so what? It's not inconveniencing the poster, or hurting anything, so now she's inconveniencing herself to stop the neighbours doing something that helps them & doesn't hurt her her, how utterly pathetic.

LookItsMeAgain · 04/02/2023 14:06

Hadn't seen that @Jellybean23 had posted the same suggestion as I did when I posted my one.

It's the perfectly reasonable explanation to give the neighbours if/when they might ask.

If you have a driveway, whether or not the street it opens out to is one way, it's really where you should be parking your car. I don't understand people who pay for a house that has a driveway and then they don't use it. It makes no sense to me at all. It's like paying for something and never using it. I can see why they would have suspected that you wouldn't mind them using it as you clearly weren't. So use it.

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/02/2023 14:14

They don't know it pisses you off as you havnt told them

So tell them

Please don't park on my drive as when I went to use it I can't

This thread is amazing. Parking on your own driveway is confrontational and pathetic.

Dilbertian · 04/02/2023 14:32

It will inconvenience her when she has to pay for repairs.

It's one thing when you have caused the wear and tear yourself after many years of light use. Quite another when it has been caused much faster by someone else's uninvited heavy use of vans.

If you read the OP she clearly says she lives alone and is intimidated by them.

Why people here are being such assholes toward her is beyond me.

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/02/2023 15:21

Im Not being an arsehole at all

But if they don't even know it annoys her ................

Maybe that's what they keep doing it as she has never said anything

It's her property, she shouldn't have to say anything! It is not their land to park on.

@ReneBumsWombats

Dont twist what I've said.

I said it was pathetic to inconvenience yourself so someone else couldn't drive across the bottom of it.

obviously parking in your own driveway where and when you want to isn't the pathetic part.

stop twisting. If you have to twist you have no argument.

Yes. By parking on your own driveway.

Like I said, the thread is amazing.

hryllilegur · 04/02/2023 20:01

Tbh, sons of the more ridiculous responses on this thread give some indication of the thought processes of the sort of people who do decide that they’ll just use other people’s drives.

‘pathetic’ indeed.

So what is wrong with wanting to use your own driveway to stop some CF trespassing on it?

ShakespearesBlister · 04/02/2023 20:14

I never cease to be amazed at the level of piss taking people will put up with under the guise of not being good with confrontation. Why don't you just give them the key for you garage and let them use it for storage as well? In face why not just let them walk all over you and give them your front door key too? Seriously woman up. This is NOT ok!

GlassBunion · 04/02/2023 20:23

It's your drive. No one should be parking on your drive.
Just park on your drive.
If someone parks on your drive, tell them it's your drive.

I can't believe that someone is scared to park on their own drive.

ReneBumsWombats · 04/02/2023 20:23

I never cease to be amazed at the level of piss taking people will put up with under the guise of not being good with confrontation.

And this isn't even confrontation! It's parking on your own driveway!

If you can't bring yourself to do that because you think it's petty or confrontational or pathetic or whatever...you deserve to get your land used as an unloading bay!

Same here.

I found out that next door was cutting across the lower half of my driveway to save themselves moving their multiple cars in and out.

I now park on the lower half of my drive.

We had the same. We spent money getting our drive altered so we could park one car in front of our house and the other up the drive, so we didn't have the constant car swapping.

It pissed me off that someone would take advantage of this by cutting across our drive, and they even did it when we were in the front garden!! If they'd asked, we might well have said ok, but it was the entitlement and the rudeness that bothered me.

There's a 3rd car in our drive now so they can't do it now a lot of time! 😛

Disputes with neighbours seldom end well.... in our last house, after several encroachments on our 'territory' I found the CF painting their side of our brand new fence with black bitumen and it was leaking through! The panels had come pre-dipped and were entirely on our side because they had decided they could use the wall that encased our boiler to build theirs up against, so there wasn't room for the fence on the boundary!!! They stopped speaking to us... 🙄

seriously @WhoNeedsSleepNotISaidMyBody you don't think its rude to use something that doesn't belong to you without asking first?
What kind of cocked up world do you live in?

You clearly haven't read and assimilated the information in the header, have you?

It's not inconveniencing the poster, or hurting anything, so now she's inconveniencing herself to stop the neighbours doing something that helps them & doesn't hurt her her, how utterly pathetic.

...tried to pull onto the drive after the school run and they were there unloading the van. They smiled and said they’d only be a few more minutes, and then got back to work. It was obvious I wasn’t pleased...

They told her to wait until they'd finished, thus preventing her from parking on her drive - which is pretty much textbook inconveniencing!

She also said that she's seen them being aggressive and intmidatory to the neighbours and as she lives alone / just her and kid/s, is frightened to take them to task.

Jeez!
