I don't mind the mice as long as they stay out of the inside of the house but rats are just nasty.

Bloody great rat in the chicken pen this morning. The rat is no longer of this world, but I doubt it was a 'recluse'.

count yourself lucky. We had a rat in the freaking house last year. The horror.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 07/02/2008 11:56

They say that for every rat you see, there are ten you don't see.

Get the air-rifle out if I were you.

PIL's rat problem started with their chicken/duck run, they didn't get on top of it straight away and are infested with them (shudder)

duchesse · 07/02/2008 12:04

Wow- you got it! Well done! I can never catch the fat little bastards. I hovered over a coop once with a fork in the air (Get off of my land! style) and nearly the revolting rodent, but even in the gloaming it spotted me and darted back in again. They're just so bloody bold.

DH shot this mornings visitor. It's the first one we've seen in over 8 years here.

All our animal fodder is stored properly but the hens have access to their corn feeder all day - so I'll start with removing that and just feeding them twice a day. I don't want rat poison on the premises so yes, guns at dawn it is!

They are machines for eating with cold, cold eyes. I fear them with an atavistic dread. They are our enemies.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 07/02/2008 12:12

onebat - in the house, urgh. Hope it was a one-off.

An ex-boyfriends cat bought a rat into the house once. Ex lifted his coat off the hook in the morning and the rat jumped out, ran down the length of his body and went to hide elsewhere in the house. Aargh!

Ugh, we have tons of rats and mice, thankfully our cat is like a freaking gorilla with a banana when it comes to protecting our house, we've only found a shrew inside but every morning we wake up to some form of dead animal on our dorrstep.

DP went in the shed the other day as well and moved a big bag of teddies of DD's we had put in there and rats and mice came scarpering out so I assume we've got some form of nest in there.

I normally just leave them to it tbh, but then I don't have any chickens or the such.

onebatmother · 07/02/2008 12:40

ugh ugh are you country VS?

If not, I'd do something about the rats. Can't really have kids playing in garden if it's truly infested, don't think. They piss Weil's Disease..

VictorianSqualor · 07/02/2008 12:57

Yep, we are country, kind of, we live in a village right opposite a farm, so theres always tons of rats and mice and shrews and pheasants and foxes other wild animals.
I actually get mroe pissed off with the big fuck off balck and white tom that keeps spraying my garden to mark it's territory

onebatmother · 07/02/2008 13:00

ah. yes. We have cat/fox-shit on the roof of our kitchen extension. Right outside the bedroom window (the one that won't open). Has been there for, oo, five months?
Madness.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 07/02/2008 15:50

Oh don't start me on bastard foxes. They shit on our doorstep almost every morning. They also like to shit on the childrens' toys - leave a football on the lawn and the chances are a fox will crouch over it for a crap. They're not too good with the chickens either.

Ahh, but they're so cute...
