To think the uk is on its knees

Just this. Every day negativity. No one is happy with life or working conditions. The country is at an all time low. Living standards getting worse by the day people getting poorer. I know we are not in poverty like some countries but honestly can’t see us ever returning to decent living standards unless you’re the few top percent earners. Tell me I’m being dramatic perhaps I am but can’t see much of a way back from this .

Most people are on low paying jobs but because of this set up, they live lovely lives and because the area is SO beautiful noone ever sells their land, just passes land down through.

BeautifulPaintings does this country not have any inheritance tax?

Goldpaw · 07/02/2023 21:11

EffortlessDesmond · 05/02/2023 16:32

@Goldpaw, I really don't think the Tory mindset has won. IMO it is essential that we all take responsibilty for our lives. Have children when your relationship is stable and you can afford to feed and rear them to adulthood.

So do you think most British people are lazy and feckless?

Coxspurplepippin · 07/02/2023 21:12

BeautifulPaintings '. I think a lot of people inherit their houses here,'

So that's how people can live in beautiful detached houses working low wage jobs, no? Not because there's anything particularly special about the utopia you live in.

TrinnySmith · 08/02/2023 07:22

How do they pay for Care Homes? Some stash under the bed?

Lilavanblue · 08/02/2023 07:44

TrinnySmith · 07/02/2023 06:41

It's hard to avoid low wages when every man and his dog wants to buy everything for the least amount of money - hence people go to local shops then look on the internet for the cheapest product and buy from there.
We are our own worst enemies. We also pay cash in hand much of the time to keep it cheap - taxman (and us) miss out.

We buy everything from the east China etc, because they have the lowest paid workers and thus the lowest prices. I don't see how we can compete wiht that.

That’s a very good point.
Sure, some people have no choice but to compare prices and go for the cheapest option. But there is definitely also a “everyone loves a bargain!” and “”I’ll wait for the sales” mentality - and yet people expect local shops to pay great wages?

Having kids shouldn't be a right. You should only have them if you can afford them and have the stability. If you want them and cannot afford them then you need to work harder. It sounds like many younger people want to have kids and not put in the work (i.e. have their cake and eat it too).

A couple of things... people make silly choices or life gets in the way e.g death, accident, illness and divorce... what do you suggest? we leave them to go without, the kids to wander the streets... as many do already if they end up in care.

We are an aging population, if we don't have more kids, then we will have and are having far more immigration & we all know the issues that brings.

We simply do not have 135k skilled people to work in the NHS or the 350k needed in social care (by 2027) and thats before we get to people needed in hospitality, food processing, logistics, engineering, software/IT etc.

There are approx 370k long term unemployed, many are unemployable, the rest of the 1.2m are short term moving between jobs.

Alexandra2001 · 08/02/2023 08:31

@Emotionalstorm Lol! i missed the "work harder" bit earlier... Do you think a carer doing double shifts for 10 or 11 per hour isn't working hard?

Unfortunately, working harder is no guarantee of getting more money.

You Tories on here do more to rubbish your own party than any opposition leader/MP ever could... its comical.

Wow, have you ever heard of circumstances changing? An accidental pregnancy? I’d love to live in your perfect world.

Thatcatisdrivingmenuts · 08/02/2023 08:45

Work harder @Emotionalstorm? You a big business owner or a politician?

You say this like there isn't a way to deal with an accidental unwanted pregnancy...

We definitely should avoid doing anything to encourage these silly choices. Unfortunately when life gets in the way, people need to deal with the consequences. We don't have infinite money to throw at people who have too many kids.

If working harder doesn't make you enough money to have children then unfortunately my belief is that you should have have them.

Where do the younger people come from to look after us in our old age/pay taxes etc?

What you appear to be advocating is a return to the Poor House, which i have always believed to be the Tories ultimate goal for the undeserving poor together with the removal of the NHS and a return to 1930s healthcare ie you go without if can't afford insurance or the fees.

JamSandle · 08/02/2023 09:46

Without children there is no future for the UK.

The government only pay benefits for up to 2 children.

We need people to have children. The UK birth rate is too low. What do you think is going to happen in the future when there are too few workers and taxpayers @Emotionalstorm?

It won’t affect me because I’ll be dead but it’ll be catastrophic for generations after me. We should be incentivising people to have children and have them younger.

Lilavanblue · 08/02/2023 10:05

Emotionalstorm · 08/02/2023 08:57

If working harder doesn't make you enough money to have children then unfortunately my belief is that you should have have them.

So people working in certain jobs, like carers, should just accept that they can’t have children? Despite doing important jobs our society needs? Sounds pretty dystopian to me.

Plus, “being able to afford children” means different things in different places. In many (most?) European countries “to afford children” doesn’t mean having to pay thousands for childcare each month, unlike in the UK.

Southwestten · 08/02/2023 10:09

We need people to have children. The UK birth rate is too low.

The same is said in Korea & China (and maybe other countries) but I thought one of the major environmental problems is too many people on the planet?

EffortlessDesmond · 08/02/2023 10:14

When I had an accidental pregnancy, I had a termination. I did not want a child.

There are indeed too many people for the planet, especially if they all want to live in a Ponzi scheme.

Blossomtoes · 08/02/2023 10:14

We’re talking specifically about the UK.

EffortlessDesmond · 08/02/2023 10:16

That is because people are living longer. The birth rate has fallen across the planet. Given education and access to contraception, most women choose to stop at 2.
