To think the uk is on its knees

Just this. Every day negativity. No one is happy with life or working conditions. The country is at an all time low. Living standards getting worse by the day people getting poorer. I know we are not in poverty like some countries but honestly can’t see us ever returning to decent living standards unless you’re the few top percent earners. Tell me I’m being dramatic perhaps I am but can’t see much of a way back from this .

@MarshaBradyo of course you like it. Sadly the traffic is only one way as I for certain could never dream of me or my children ever enjoying the opportunities of a london life as we are priced out. Can't even afford to move to desirable places here in the north as yet again priced out.
Our big M and S is shutting in a few months, Zara left last year, after that expect Waterstones to go. Our large town of 300,000 is on its arse. Levelling up a joke.
It's so frustrating being told that life is great in tory britain when reality is far from the truth.

I don’t think I post without saying other areas can be different. I’m not saying to anyone they can’t post about their life. The opposite in fact just let people post whether positive or not.

It must be hard with places closing and I do appreciate the changes I’ve seen here.

I think it’s a shame if people won’t post due to being pounced on though. I’m interested in more than one reality and mn is misaligned enough to rl as it is.

MrsGolightly
I don't recognise this. I'm a french resident and can get a same day appointment with my doctor.

You obviously don't live in a 'medical desert'.

31 Jan 2023
Sick patients in France lacking GP to be contacted before summer, minister says.

There is a general shortage of medécins généraliste (GPs or family doctors) in France, with some areas classed as ‘medical deserts’ where people find it almost impossible to register with a doctor.

The health minister said that people without access to primary care doctors are “deprived of a regular follow-up” and that this is “no longer acceptable” for those with chronic illnesses.

www.thelocal.com/20230131/sick-patients-in-france-lacking-gp-to-be-contacted-before-summer-minister-says/

Clearly not. Unsure where these areas are....

Luminalintel768 · 02/02/2023 18:41

The poster wanging on about France’s “medical deserts” needs a basic geography lesson!

And strange that the pps who are living in France right now are all saying they can see their gps same day or next!

LexMitior · 02/02/2023 18:42

Thing is we are only here a short time and saying things go in cycles is not much comfort when you have children at school, need to rely on the NHS. These things really matter and the reason they exist are to maintain a stable and reasonably healthy society.

The UK has some big problems. One of those is a lack of political stability. The second is the lack of competence in leaders, and the third is the result - less investment.

Brexit will take a decade to recover from, there are not easy answers and the people who were persuaded that there were such answers by the weird English nationalism in the Conservatives are going to find it will be biting them hard in the arse and they will not be getting richer.

Well off secure people can weather this okay. For everyone else you are going to pay a lot more for a lot less.

MacDoodleofredbrookcounty · 02/02/2023 18:42

SweetSenorita · 02/02/2023 14:22

Well, that's great but it's not persuading me whatsoever to look to leave the UK for Sweden.

What else does Sweden have to recommend it?

What a stupid response.

I don't believe the poster was trying to persuade you or anyone to move to Sweden.

roarfeckingroarr · 02/02/2023 18:43

Tinkerbyebye · 02/02/2023 14:56

We are no worse than any other country, it’s just we linked to think we are

i have access to my GP, hospital appointments coming though ok, we had to call an ambulance recently for a family member, arrived quickly, hospital not overwhelmed and we were seen quickly, schools in my area not on strike , plenty of food in the shops

it maybe different in other areas, but certainly not all
.yes more can be done to help, but it’s not as bad as people are makingout

now wait to be told off by rabid Tory hating mumsnetters

Me too. I can get a GP app the same day. We still have cheaper food than France (according to FIL, who's over from France where he lives). Our energy bills are high but aside that... life is good, people just like doing us down.

LexMitior · 02/02/2023 18:46

What fuckery is that. The economy is not growing, we have low rates of investment, collapsing tax take and not one actual new trade deal post Brexit in force.

That is a failure. I'm comfortable but that is absolutely dire. Tory hating doesn't come into it. It's bloody incompetent

stoodmyground · 02/02/2023 18:48

MacDoodleofredbrookcounty · 02/02/2023 18:42

@SweetSenorita Well you could google benefits of living in Sweden, if you are honestly interested in different ways to live.

But no, we’re not trying to persuade anyone to move here or anywhere else. Stay in the UK instead and fight for a better standard of living.

roarfeckingroarr · 02/02/2023 18:49

@Doowop1919 every two days from 40 days sounds like overkill to me. I'm in London and I've also been seen every 2 weeks since 32 weeks. I was seen again today at 40+5 and will be again early next week if need be.

MacDoodleofredbrookcounty · 02/02/2023 18:52

MarshaMelrose · 02/02/2023 15:21

Ah, nothing Mumsnetters love more than the UK is on its knees and there is no more shit place on earth to live than in England.

It almost feels like a crime to say you're happy and life in the UK is good.

Do you mean England or the UK?

No wonder so many Welsh and Scots want to go their own way.

Incidentally, having lived in England, I can confirm it's a pretty shitty place to live.

safeplanet · 02/02/2023 18:53

I think maternity care in this country could be much better personally

Wexone · 02/02/2023 18:54

@SpringtimeCherries I don't think I siad anything about seeing a gp though? if I did I apologise. It's not free unlike the UK. however where I live we have 5 doctors and if it's not super urgent it's three weeks to see a doctor. teachers being good pay is being debatable at the mo. lots of them complaining about wages when they were changed after the 2008 recession. plus they are struggling to get staff too. friends of mine are teachers they are always complaining however i do remind them of the ling hols they get to the permanent ones. your right we have issues here too but defo not as bad as the UK. every time I speak to my relatives in the UK it gets more and more depressing

Lonelycrab · 02/02/2023 18:55

The UK has some big problems. One of those is a lack of political stability

Thats because we have a party within a party running the country. The swivel eyed loons paired with the semi-sane remnants of the CP. Since 2016 they’ve been having a big punch up with themselves instead of actually running the country, and that’s bought us to where we are. Hence the bullshit of Truss and her magic budget, ongoing Rishi plots and Bunters return. Ffs

They aren't that far behind Albania and Turkey.

Disgraceful stats for the worlds 6th largest economy.

LexMitior · 02/02/2023 19:01

@Lonelycrab this will not get better until they are out of government.

The Conservatives are eating themselves from the inside.

I don't think it has to be this way but we are apparently like a tin pot dictatorship where everything has to be Brexit compatible. Watching the pragmatic and sensible country I grew and prospered in succumb to nationalism is very sad.

Ariautec · 02/02/2023 19:07

Yes, we are on our knees, we can't even prioritise the care of our most vulnerable children. Disgraceful act by the government.

Definitely postcode lottery on this one. I’m currently pregnant with my 4th and my maternity care both ante and post natal each time, including this one, has been outstanding.

Crikeyalmighty · 02/02/2023 19:20

I'm sorry but I've never heard as much rubbish as saying that labour and Gordon Brown wanted everyone on benefits and people in low paid jobs could only work a few hours and that's to blame for all the problems now. They put policies in place that even moderate and especially lower income workers got working tax credits so they were always better off working. Choosing to work few hours was down to 'people' and choices they made, certainly not governmental policy. What was stopping them actually getting a full time job and working tax credits ?? The fact is that due to the rental situation and house price issues in many parts of the country it can almost make sense to work part time- particularly if you rent in the private sector. This is a by product of housing policy- and selling off social housing (a Tory policy) it has bugger all to do with the labour government of 13 years ago trying to make sure people were on benefits and not working. (Total fantasy) Where do people get this kind of propaganda from !! It's the Daily Express or Mail at its finest.

Even Stranger -
6 Jan 2023
Macron acknowledged the problem of access to care in France, indicating that he wants to “redistribute” health services to relieve emergency services and remedy medical deserts, defined as geographic areas in which it is very difficult to get medical care from a healthcare professional due to the absence of local doctors.

For citizens living in medical deserts, Macron said he is seeking to better remunerate city doctors who provide permanent care. Currently, 6 million French people do not have a regular doctor, including 600,000 with chronic diseases, according to the French Union for Free Medicine (UFML).

These 600,000 patients “will be offered a general practitioner before the end of the year” or, failing that, “a treatment team”, promised Macron.

@4thonthe4th defo postcode lottery for ante but I thought post was poor everywhere?

NotAgainFrederick · 02/02/2023 19:28

There are issues in some very rural areas in France with access to Drs.

safeplanet · 02/02/2023 19:30

I would agree with the very rural parts of France have difficulty accessing care but I still think their healthcare system is far superior.

GPTec1 · 02/02/2023 19:31

Obviously if you have a well paid job, private health, kids in independent school (or finished school) then of course life is great, especially if you live in a decent part of London.

Approx just 25% will vote Tory at the next GE and most people now believe Brexit to be a mistake, so those who say MN doesn't reflect RL really mean "MN doesn't reflect my privileged POV"

We are not predicted to back at pre pandemic levels of growth until 2026, all our major competitors are already there (BOE forecast today)

As for France, i spend weeks there at a time, they have nothing like the same issues as we do, inflation is barely 6% for starters & AE and Ambulance wait times are what we can only dream off.

safeplanet · 02/02/2023 19:28

@4thonthe4th defo postcode lottery for ante but I thought post was poor everywhere?

I’ve had 3 csections and honestly, my post natal care has been amazing everytime. Obviously I’m not there yet with this pregnancy but even last time just before the lockdown, my midwives and HVs were incredible. My sister had a vaginal birth in 2019 and was out of hospital quicker than me so had more post natal care at home than in hospital but she too was very happy.
