AIBU for being mad at nursery re. Carseat storage?

Hi all.
LG #2 (10 months) has just started nursery today! My husband and I are both shift workers and apart from rare days whoever drops off doesn't pick up due to the shifts.
My husband dropped her off this morning and left the carseat there. No biggie right?
I picked her up and they told me that we couldn't leave the carseat there because they didn't have a dedicated storage room.
Now, I didn't ask when registering her if we could leave the carseat, but I've never known a nursery to not allow you to leave a pram/carseat! I toured a lot and all the other nurseries in the area have storage for prams/carseats - I guess I just forgot to ask 🤦‍♀️ We can't afford to buy another seat and have one in each car. AIBU being mad at them?
I'll probably have a word tomorrow and say we'll have to move her somewhere else if we can't sort out something out until she grows out of the size 0 carseat (we have two of the size 1/2/3 seats already) so it won't be a problem in 3 months but I don't want to come across as a drama queen...
Thanks for any input/advice!

I have never once, in the various nurseries I’ve experienced, come across one that allows parents to store pushchairs or car seats?

ladycarlotta · 01/02/2023 23:53

It's not that bizarre - our nursery has a dedicated buggy store room where people can shove kids' bikes and scooters as well as folded buggies until pick-up time, so I doubt a car seat would be an issue at ours. But it's obviously a case-by-case basis and you shouldn't have assumed they would have space. Just get a spare car seat; it'll be cheaper and easier than moving nursery.

kitcat15 · 01/02/2023 23:55

at my GDs nursery there is a canopy at the side of the door…..you can leave prams or car seats there…..they are not secure though….I mean nurseries just wouldn’t have the space for storage would they

vickylou78 · 01/02/2023 23:57

Surely it's cheaper to buy a new car seat so you've one in each car than change nursery? This is a slight overreaction!

Try getting a second hand car seat on Facebook marketplace, sometimes people give them away for free

Don't get a second hand one, you don't know if they've expired or been in an accident. Just spend the money, it's for the safety of your child

I think that nursery relationships are crucial and you should be more careful not to come across as a nightmare early on. Most do not have space and I wouldn't expect accommodation for individual requirements. In my experience if you look around you wouldn't find many alternatives and would run out of them soon. School is much worse, they don't offer seamless childcare solutions or enabling one car seat for both parents automatically or often at all more you need to work out how to work together and fit in whilst getting your child into the best environment possible and saving any unpleasantness or individual requirements for when it's really needed.

Our daycare had a strict policy on not storing prams and car seats. There was simply no room to do so.

ChildcareIsBroken · 02/02/2023 01:17

I'm surprised by those comments, I've viewed probably 10 nurseries before choosing one and all but one had a buggy storage (car seat would be ok too I'm sure).
OP, I'd talk to the nursery, but without threatening to leave, and ask if you can find a solution for those 3 months.

notangelinajolie · 02/02/2023 01:30

Presuming you've taken time and care choosing this nursery. For the sake of £50, just buy another car seat. Surely a bit drastic to change nursery?

Saschka · 02/02/2023 02:03

We used two nurseries in London, and one in Toronto, and all of them had an outside buggy store/bike shed on the premises. Totally normal.

Maybe it is a city thing, nobody was coming by car so parents would have needed to take an empty pushchair on the tube to work with them at rush hour otherwise, which obviously nobody wants to do.

That’s not safe

All nurseries I looked at have this! How else do parents with no car do drop off then go straight to work, which is typically the reason for needing childcare? Car seats less often as typically you can leave in car it came in, but typically applies to prams

Most people reading this seem to drive their children to nursery. Without pram storage I wouldn’t be able to get to work! It’s not unusual in London at all. Surprised at how so many comments are tearing the OP down for something that is normal in many places, they just haven’t experienced it.

Lulu1919 · 02/02/2023 06:40

Can't you just have a car seat in each car ?

Clymene · 02/02/2023 06:46

Pram store isn't car seat store though. Like I said earlier, there was a pram store at my nursery in London but it was outside and fine for a pram but I wouldn't have wanted to put an expensive car seat in there - semi open to the elements and stuff did get a bit bashed about when people were hurrying.

I'd just buy another car seat

WonderingWanda · 02/02/2023 06:50

I think it should have been something you checked before hand really. We always had car seats in both cars for that reason. It's not an unreasonable thing to ask of a nursery but it's also not unreasonable for them to not have space. I think your anger is a little misplaced. Is there no way you can get your hands on a second seat?

LolaSmiles · 02/02/2023 06:51

I think some of the responses might be on the harsh side because the OP said she was mad at the nursery for it.

It's a bit unreasonable for someone to be mad at a nursery for not providing a service that not everywhere provides and they didn't check that the nursery offered.

For those in London who need storage for a buggy, I'd imagine you check that when selecting a nursery, though from what the OP is saying they want to be able to store a car seat and they need additional on side storage for other reasons too. It seems like they do have a request that goes beyond the buggy shed/drop off area that many city-based posters describe.

justmewithmylifetoday · 02/02/2023 06:56

You're not living on another planet. To everyone saying " but if they found space for you, they'd have to do if for everyone." Would they though? No, they wouldn't. Not everyone in is going to request car seat storage. Understandable if they literally don't have space. Our nursery are funny about it because they don't have an area free so it would be in a corridor, which if they are inspected could flag up as blocking an exit. Which imo is overkill but it's the way it is.

It would be silly to move if you're happy with the nursery, imo it's hard to find a nursery your happy with so I'd stick with it and work something out.

Muu · 02/02/2023 06:59

Welcome to the world of being a parent and having big bulky things to store and cart around. This is your life now.

I used a baby carrier as much as I possibly could to avoid taking our pram anywhere so I sympathise!

Lcb123 · 02/02/2023 06:59

YABU. You didn’t check. Buy another car seat - you can afford two cars!

gettingalifttothestation · 02/02/2023 07:00

You are being ridiculous to move nursery when you could just buy the cheapest seat for three months.

ClemDanFango · 02/02/2023 07:05

It’s your initial attitude that has ticked people off. You came across as entitled, rude and demanding, blaming the nursery for your mistake.

turkeyboots · 02/02/2023 07:08

Every nursery I used in London and the SE had a buggy shed. Which was totally at your own risk as it wasn't water tight, stuff got battered and stolen. A nightmare for nursery staff though as someone was always kicking off about it.

blippyissilly · 02/02/2023 07:09

Imagine if every parent wanted to store a car seat or pram at nursery

The answer is to buy another car seat. It's not down to the nursery to provide storage space

When my youngest was teeny and we were walking with her in a sling and her big sis walking. It depends how far nursery is how practical that would be. Ours was only 10 minutes away (though it took longer with a 3 year old walking)
