Dear MN
Struggling with this and I really don’t know why! Partner of 18 months who’s incredibly loving (tells me he loves me all the time, massively complimentary) - recently ‘love you’ in texts & at end of calls has become ‘Love ya!’ - really don’t like it, maybe because it’s what my teenager says to her friends in WhatsApp messages… feels a bit like I’m his ‘mate’… would this annoy anyone else? Or am I being utterly unreasonable to feel like this?

You feel how you feel about it. I wouldn't feel that way. Maybe talk with him about it. See if he means it as mates?

I love reading posts like this objecting to a partner declaring their love next to posts about husband's flying in business class leaving their wife and toddler in coach. Really makes me think.

I’d feel the same. Occasionally my dh calls me mate! I always say “mate??!!” and he’s like oops sorry! Like calling your teacher mum or whatever, but if it’s annoying you just tell him.

Seems an odd thing for a man to say? I don’t think I’ve ever heard a man use that in my life. Only (young) women.

I think I’d just say something like “Love ya? What, are you channeling [daughter] now? 😂”
