Accident: 8 weeks to retain/transfer private reg?

My elderly mum was driving when she was hit by another car. She had to be taken to be taken to hospital. Broken ribs, shaken up, very very sore.

Not her fault at all. She is also disabled.

Car written off. 17 years old so not worth anything.

Sole carer for my 85 year old dad so had to get new car sorted asap for her when she was fit to drive.

Insurance referred her to physio and doctor and psychiatrist.

Insurance said they'd keep written off car until she'd applied for her private reg to be transferred. She'd had the plate 15 years.

3 months later we got round to applying to retain her private registration. She couldn't find her log book before then and you can't apply online to do this where car a write off and she didn't have a printer to print off forms and I live another country so not directly on hand. Couldn't find cheque book to pay for retention either so postal order got.

DVLA has now said she only had 8 weeks to apply to retain her reg.

I can't see reference to 8 weeks on any document or online. Insurance never said either - they explained what she had to do to transfer reg and that they'd hold her car which they still do we got that confirmed last week.

Has anyone come across this before please? Has she lost her number plate please?

As she got nothing for her car and she's lost out due to accident it's like another thing she's lost.
