I won't do cards.

I just refuse to do cards. Birthday, Christmas. I find it so pointless and a stamp is a pound and a trip to the post office is a pain when I have work etc.

I've stopped sending any cards at all. I thought we were heading into the age of technology. I don't see why cards are lingering about being a thing when we can easily send a fancy and snazzy message with moving pictures and sparkles.

Cards need to naff off, right?

Lazy

HellyR · 01/02/2023 17:08

You don't need to go to the post office to send a card...

Toomuchinfor · 01/02/2023 17:08

Yabu to use the word naff.

Toomuchinfor · 01/02/2023 17:09

Especially as a verb.

SlashBeef · 01/02/2023 17:09

I don't think yabu. I don't do cards either. They go straight into recycling here if we do get them!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 01/02/2023 17:09

It depends who for.

Funkypickle · 01/02/2023 17:09

Completely agree. Haven't done them in years. I'll buy gift etc but would rather spend the money I'd spend on a card on the gift. Such a pointless waste.

If anyone asks I say I don't do them and if they get salty about it I just remind them of the unnecessary environmental impact they have.

minipie · 01/02/2023 17:10

I haven’t done cards for years. Thank yous are important but get sent by text or email. YANBU imo.

NowThatIThink · 01/02/2023 17:11

I like getting them, and usually send them to good friends. I keep a book of stamps and a stash of cards in the house, and there's a postbox about fifty feet from my front gate, so it's not a chore.

CoalCraft · 01/02/2023 17:12

I'm with you. Don't do cards except for the birthdays of people who I will be seeing on person (so no stamp, etc).

GlassBunion · 01/02/2023 17:14

I think they've had their day.
On the odd occasion that I do buy them I'm often staggered at how much they can cost.
Throw in an eye watering stamp price by comparison then I'll be surprised if they'll last much longer.

They were only really introduced to be an easy and attractive way of sending greetings to those who lived far away whilst there was no other means of communicating.

I think we've moved on a bit since then.

lowclouds · 01/02/2023 17:14

I wouldn't want a card from someone who doesn't see the point because it's usually a generic Clintons offering which just reads "To lowclouds, happy birthday, from X" which is boring and pointless.

However, I absolutely love getting cards when people put actual thought into them, choose an image/ design they think I will like, and write me a personal message. Lots of my friends do this and it means more to me than most presents.

DRS1970 · 01/02/2023 17:14

I don't see the point of cards either. It is just a waste of resources.

MaverickGooseGoose · 01/02/2023 17:16

Haven't done Christmas cards for years, still do birthday for family / close friends.

AlisonDonut · 01/02/2023 17:16

I've not done cards for 2 decades.

Interesting view about the environmental impact. What presents are you buying out of curiosity?

Cards generally have a much smaller environmental impact than gifts.

A lot of people buy a gift online, get it delivered to the, wrap it up (wrapping paper often includes plastic, tape, etc). The presents themselves often include plastic of some kind or are manufactured abroad and have a carbon footprint to get here.

It's just interesting people complain about the environmental impact of cards. I personally often prefer a thoughtful card with a handwritten message to a gift.

Kangarude · 01/02/2023 17:18

So don't do them Confused

Now that really does seem pointless to me. Cards are surely for sending a message to someone you won't be seeing?

I have a few older realtives who I know like getting them so I keep sending them. It seems like a depressing life if £2/3 and a trip to the post box is too much to ask when it will make someone smile.

IglesiasPiggl · 01/02/2023 17:20

I like cards, especially thank you cards. Sending a text is so generic, a card just feels a bit more special. I stock up when they're on special offer from a company that does 8 for £10. I have, however, cut down on Christmas cards to only those who also send to me on the basis that I don't want to invest time and energy on cards for people who aren't into it themselves.

smileladiesplease · 01/02/2023 17:21

Not done for years to adults. Do to kids though.I send a text or whassap or if close a present via Amazon or flowers. No cards

jays · 01/02/2023 17:21

I would make an exception for a sympathy card. I only got one card after my mum died, it was a sudden and awful death and I hung onto that sympathy card for dear life, I don’t know why but it gave me comfort. I never realised how much a card would mean at that time but it really did mean a lot to me and way more than a text etc.

Wexone · 01/02/2023 17:30

i am with @lowclouds train of thought. I only have a few people to buy cards for and when i do i take the time and effort to buy one they like and suits them plus write a message in it. Get some nice messages to say they love their cards that were sent in the post some have even framed theirs. The small things help
