WIBU to leave them on their own at home for 1 night ?
No neighbours nearby.
They are often alone during the day but we have always come home.
Worried about them not turning off appliances or locking up properly but also fully aware that they need to learn responsibility for these things.

Please come back @FrostyFifi and explain to these dozens of people the meaning of humour or sarcasm or maybe a mixture of both 😮 😆 she was not serious people.

@seratoninmoonbeams - I can’t believe the number of posters who thought she was being serious! 🤣

I knoooooow. I don't know whether to laugh or cry 😭 😆

DSis & I were left for several weeks at 16 & 17 while DParents & DB went to Aus on hols. We went to school & part-time jobs, normal hobbies, drank all the advocat & god-awful peach schnapps in the cupboard, and used the cars until the petrol ran out 🤣. And presumably managed to feed ourselves as we're still here.
Are older teens now completely incompetent?

@Roundabout78 @quietnightmare I cannot believe how many people are outraged at the 'not until 25' comment either as if they were serious 🤣🤣🙄🙄 ....... seriously......

Come in, be fair..:you never fucking know on mumsnet!

Of course you can, if they get along and don't fight. Mine did/do and I did leave them overnight at that age. All fine, never any problems.
Neighbours were friends and knew so kids could call on them if needed. I went to Cornwall (from London) to work the season straight from my last o level exam, at 16. Called home once a week. Had a great time.
I then went to Australia a month after my 18th birthday for six months and there were no mobile phones then. My daughter went to reading festival just after her GCSEs, at 16. No problem. Son is 17 and going to holiday in Greece with friends in august.
I'm delighted that he feels comfortable travelling.
I have friends who left home at 16. Professional adults in their 50s now.
Go out and leave them to it.
Maybe text to remind them to switch appliances off.

@Roundabout78 - I guess that’s true 😅

seratoninmoonbeams · 01/02/2023 22:34

@Roundabout78 haha. Fair point 😆

romany4 · 01/02/2023 22:48

They'll be fine!
My parents went on holiday for a week, leaving me home alone when I was 16. I went to college each day and worked my evening job 3 nights too.
I loved having the house to myself!
