List of striking teachers

Hi
one of my sons is in the upper sixth of the local grammar school
the headmistress has just sent a list of striking teachers (for our information)
to get a idea of what our child’s day is going to look like
do you think this is a power move by the head trying to name and shame the teachers
I think it’s totally unnecessary its a legal right to strike
strike or not I support all teachers in their choice
just wondering on peoples opinions ?

@Motherland2624
why did you feel it necessary to raise with the head out of interest?

Because it’s wrong and I wanted to
what’s your problem? With expressing my opinion

I suspect our child / children attend the same school. I read the E-mail in the morning, It took me about 1 minute to compose my reply questioning how appropriate a “send to all” e-mail was ( absolutely not in my opinion ). I haven’t received a reply because this particular school has now made it very difficult to contact them ( they use a generic communications system ). I have other issues with this particular schools leadership….but that’s another story.

I emailed the head of year to begin with who was very engaging
she forwarded it to head because yes it’s pretty much impossible to get a response otherwise

It's outrageous that a) the Head knows which staff members were striking and b) she's shared it with parents. The union guidance is very strict ie you do not tell the head that you're striking. It's fine to tell the union rep so they can (if they want) give numbers to the head, but no way should names be shared.

You asked a silly question, the answer to which was obvious from the OP.

OP was not being rude in her reply, she's assumed it's a faux naive question implying that there is something wrong with what she did and is genuinely asking why you are criticising her.

Crumpetdisappointment · 02/02/2023 13:23

that is the second time i have been accused on this thread of being faux
faux ignorant
as well as faux naive.

donquixotedelamancha · 02/02/2023 13:24

@Motherland2624 Please forward the email you received to the NEU. It's not unusual for the teachers themselves to be to nervous to take action against heads like this.

I'm not accusing you, I'm happy to accept you may have genuinely not understood the OP, I was just explaining how the question came across and why you got that reply.

Suedomin · 02/02/2023 13:29

Completely unnecessary. All the school needed to do was tell parents which class/year groups should stay at home

That's more like it! Sounds like the appropriate investigations will now be made.
I'd say your work is done OP. Well done.

I would. Chances are they will find out but the sooner they know the sooner they can take steps to ensure their members don't face any further negative action.

Hopefully it's just (staggering) incompetence but malice seems more likely to me. I can't imagine any UK headteacher not knowing how wrong this is.

saraclara · 02/02/2023 16:15

The union will already be very aware of this, so I don't think you need to do any more.
It still boggles my mind that she did this. I doubt she'll still be in post this time next year. She will have lost the confidence and trust of staff, parents and the governing body, and she'll know that. Her position is pretty much untenable now.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 02/02/2023 16:15

Good work OP. Absoloutley the right steps taken.

Justmeandthedog1 · 02/02/2023 16:17

Data breach? You can report it here if you wish, OP. ico.org.uk/for-organisations/report-a-breach/personal-data-breach/

saraclara · 02/02/2023 16:17

Pretty much every teacher in that list will have contacted their union yesterday morning @donquixotedelamancha . It's literally the first thing that, as a teacher, I'd do. And since they were all at home, they'd have had their phones to hand to call within minutes.

The governors' letter says they've already reported it

I agree and I would too- now, but I've worked in a school where it was really bad. I didn't tell anyone about extreme bullying from the head until I became suicidal. When it all came out there were 50 staff (over half) who'd been subject to similar going back 3 years.

It takes a moment for OP to send an email, just in case.

I disagree about the union guidance- it's very clear you do not have to tell the head but you can if you want.

In some cases it makes sense because if a head knows 90% of their staff will be off, they will shut the school in most cases.

Many striking teachers were out yesterday at pickets and rallies.

They may also not have known the email was sent until today.

I am sure they will have contacted their union etc, but if they weren't sent the email, it's possible they do not know about it.

The colleague grapevine will have been on fire. Seriously..any teachers at rallies or on their way to one will have had their phones going mad.

It's unthinkable, with that many teachers on the list, that 30 hours later none of them will know about it.
Also they were back at school today, where the place would be buzzing with it. A massive data breach and a single teacher would be unaware?

I should have written 'can tell'. I gave a rough idea of numbers to help the head decide what to do. He is extremely supportive and I felt it was a fair thing to do.
