Royals should send their children to State schools

And politicians too. Just that really. I have nothing against private schools, but I think that if you head or represent a State you should proudly use the education it provides. Unless you think it is not good enough and then you should do something about it.

I would worry about the risk of harm to other children attending a school with the child of a high profile person, from terrorism. Or general psychopaths.

Whatislove82 · 01/02/2023 09:23

Why the concern for state school peers and not private school peers 😂?

Whatislove82 · 01/02/2023 09:25

@MaybeIWillFuckOffThen

I've never understood why people get on Abbott's case about this so much. It's a bit like saying "Diane Abbott campaigned for taxes to be made higher for the wealthy, but didn't give loads of her spare money to charity! Hypocrite!"

No, it’s not a “bit like saying” at all.

Whatislove82 · 01/02/2023 09:25

@MaybeIWillFuckOffThen

you do understand that our taxes don’t go to charity, don’t you? 😂

Brefugee · 01/02/2023 09:13

we live in a free country where you can spend your money how you wish

which completely ignores the structural inequality inherent in our cap-doffing system of allowing "royals" to be "better than everyone else".

The point pp made about Diane Abbot's son upthread was spot on.

The answer to that problem is to abolish the monarchy.

And to improve state education considerably.

And for people not to vote for blatant hypocrites.

Just decreeing that royals must use their local state school makes bugger all difference. It’s just performance to appease the masses.

theworldhas · 01/02/2023 09:27

Schools just reflect the huge economic/class disparities in society. Many of the best schools are state school - but overwhelmingly in expensive areas of course. If you want a more equal/meritocratic society you need to tackle the rots of the problem (income disparity/parents low aspirations/community breakdown/crime/ poverty) etc. Schools are just a symptom, and unless you also randomise where people live/buy houses, banning private schools wouldn’t fix the issue.

Nope. Their kids, their choice.

And the Royals have no control over the quality (or lack thereof) of state schools.

And you do know there are 'posh' state schools too?

And you don’t for fee paying children?!

Frankly, the Royals have a very good following and they can do a lot in terms of changing education and healthcare.
The Princess of Wales just returned back with a campaign on the importance of early years...
Politicians are those that actually can and should change the system - why shouldn't they show their total commitment to what they provide?
Holidays are a different thing, but yes, I do expect politicians to take a fair amount of holidays in the UK.
And use British cars.
Like in other countries.
What is wrong with that?
I also do not second the fact that I cannot tell someone how they have to educate their child as they provide education and the health standards. They should stick by it.

How do you feel about them buying imported groceries and clothes and cars that are also made here?

I would not - so I do not expect them to

because they wouldn't be shit or failing if everyone had to send their children there.

i believe it's traditional at this point to mention the Finnish school system? No private schools for this reason (yes yes smaller population, probably higher per capita tax)

They do not have kids going to school with knives though and moist want to learn

SuperGinger · 01/02/2023 09:38

I doubt many MPs without a private income can afford private schools.

I think they should pay MPs better to attract better more talented people from across all social classes to level up should be comparable to other top careers but that is another debate.

Overandunderit · 01/02/2023 09:41

There should be no private schools.

hryllilegur · 01/02/2023 09:41

Whatislove82 · 01/02/2023 09:28

And you don’t for fee paying children?!

Their parents are making the choice to expose their children to that.

If I were a fee paying parent, I’d choose to pay a school that didn’t expose my children to this stuff. And I could exercise my choice in the independent school marketplace.

Or I could use my local state school.

But as I can’t afford private school, I just have to use my local state school - the one we could get into from our address. The situation is entirely different.

What happens if the royal child joined after your child started?

Whatislove82 · 01/02/2023 09:42

Ie they enrolled their child before they knew a royal child would be joining

BellePeppa · 01/02/2023 09:43

A lot of people I know have said if they had the money they would send their children to private school. Not every child at state school is their parents’ public statement of support for state schools against private.

EzzieM · 01/02/2023 09:44

I’m not sure you’ve understood how life works, OP.

hryllilegur · 01/02/2023 09:44

How are you going to assess the cars as sufficiently British? Car manufacturing is a global industry.

BellePeppa · 01/02/2023 09:45

Overandunderit · 01/02/2023 09:41

There should be no private schools.

Only if all state schools raised their game. Which they won’t.

Brefugee · 01/02/2023 09:45

agree with all this. Just to be clear, I went to school with some excessively rich kids, and some titled poshos. And - meh. Some were fine, some were awful.

But there is evidence, i think, that if sharp-elbowed, well-off middle-class parents send their children to state schools, they can do a lot of good. (I am not criticising them, but this is how they get things moving and get things done). So in that respect it could be good if some schools had some richer parents involved.

Frankly? Abolish the monarchy, get a better government, use taxes more efficiently. I'd be on board with all that.

hryllilegur · 01/02/2023 09:45

Whatislove82 · 01/02/2023 09:42

I’d move my child. Seriously.

StarsSand · 01/02/2023 09:47

I agree.

It should be an ethical requirement that they use state schools and the NHS. With very few exceptions made.

I'm sure we'd see things improve if it was the case.

hryllilegur · 01/02/2023 09:48

But that’s hypothetical.

My kids are and will continue to be state educated. Because that’s how life works.

But I wouldn’t want them to go to school with the royal family. Definitely not.

BellePeppa · 01/02/2023 09:49

Whatislove82 · 01/02/2023 09:28

And you don’t for fee paying children?!

They’re usually a lot smaller so more manageable. My kids went to private and from the ages of 0-18 there were only about 350 pupils. That’s divided into three buildings: pre, prep and seniors (including 6th form). That’s a heck of a lot easier to manage than a one/two thousand pupil plus senior school in basically one building.
