Vacuum for Valentines?!

Whatonearth2021 · 31/01/2023 20:10

So I’ve been dating a really great guy for a few months. He’s everything I would ask - funny, kind, generous, patient and pretty darn hot! However he announced this evening that he was thinking of getting me a Miele vacuum cleaner for our first Valentine’s on the basis that “it’s a good one so it will save you time cleaning that you can then spend on doing fun things”. I should add we don’t live together so this is not a cocklodger-type thing. It’s a genuinely held belief and he’s utterly bemused at my less than ecstatic reaction. AIBU?

Great present, expensive - and a thoughtful reason.

Will I be the first to ask: what are you getting him?

meetmeatmidnights · 31/01/2023 20:14

Wow! Does he want to buy me one too?!

Tell him you want the scout RX3 or the triflex HX2 pro! Get your moneys worth!

Whatonearth2021 · 31/01/2023 20:14

@Testina are you in league with him?? 😂

Hi @Whatonearth2021

Sorry, I love you’re post and I don’t know why but it really cheered me up. I’m not sure if you’re being unreasonable or not, just trust your instincts.

I would say though that he has taste in cleaning equipment (which in itself might be a good sign): you can’t go wrong with German engineering, vorsprung durch technik and all that.

Have a lovely Valentine’s Day ❤️

Whatonearth2021 · 31/01/2023 20:14

@Testina are you in league with him?? 😂

This will be outing (to him, and I doubt he reads MN 🤣) but the only guy to buy me a vacuum cleaner (a Henry - for my birthday) actually dumped me by text on Valentine’s Day.

10 years on, we’re friends still and Henry is still going strong.

It’s a great present!

HermioneWeasley · 31/01/2023 20:26

I got the missus a Miele for Valentine’s Day a few years ago and she was ecstatic. Nearly as good as the year I took her car and filled it up because she hates doing it - nothing says romance like 50 quids worth of diesel.

you’re a lucky lady.

crosspusscrossstitcher · 31/01/2023 20:33

I bought my DH a Dyson one year for his birthday. 🤷‍♀️

Gingernuttie · 31/01/2023 20:37

I think it's fine as you don't live together. He's not buying you a household appliance so you can clean a joint house is he, so it's very different.
If it's a present you'd like, it's a good present. It's definitely a thoughtful present, so I'd accept gracefully. If it isn't your idea of romantic, that's fine, but he isn't being unreasonable. Just spend the next year nudging him towards things you do find romantic. It's all part of getting to know each other.

Eastereggsboxedupready · 31/01/2023 20:42

Next time he suggests a blow job shove the vaccum end over his dick....

LadyVanelope · 31/01/2023 20:44

Ha ha yes this!

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 31/01/2023 20:47

I wouldn't mind a Roomba or an Eufy for Valentine's Day.

MereDintofPandiculation · 31/01/2023 20:49

I couldn’t afford a Miele, so great present! My DH may get a card. Or he may not.

my best ever birthday present was a tonne of gravel.

PenguinsandHippos · 31/01/2023 20:55

It’s only romantic if you actually want one.

If you don’t want / need one, or would prefer to select and buy one yourself then YANBU.

This might be great later in the relationship, but perhaps it’s too early for you and you want to indulge in flowers / wine / chocolates a bit longer.

Either way, just tell him if you do / don’t want it. Men aren’t psychic.

SomersetDreams · 14/02/2023 13:16

ROmance is not dead :) Miele is good quality gift

RealBecca · 14/02/2023 13:20

Did you get the Miele?!?!!?

Alwayswonderedwhy · 14/02/2023 13:22

We'll they're expensive so I'd take it then dump him. Win win.

seratoninmoonbeams · 14/02/2023 13:24

@Whatonearth2021 can you update please? 🤣

ijphoo · 14/02/2023 13:29

I think you'll have to suck it up.

Thesaucysalad · 14/02/2023 13:31

I think it’s a lovely gift and thoughtful as he was thinking of you having more time to do the things u enjoy! Social media is full of “clean with me” type videos…..with people cooing over the new dyson hoovers etc, maybe he’s seen a few of these videos and got the impression that it was something you’d find exciting!

I think the gift is nice & generous, but maybe ur just not compatible.

Whatonearth2021 · 15/02/2023 04:54

Update - no I didn’t get the Miele - I got a present that was more in keeping with what I was hoping for this time round. 😍But am grateful for your responses as it really made me think about my priorities! All very healthy for a new relationship. I hope you all had a lovely Valentine’s

I bought my husband a new blender for our 20th wedding anniversary. He loved it.

TheLastDreamOfTheOak · 15/02/2023 08:18

I'd genuinely love this. Then I could volley out bastard Henry into a skip.

That said first Valentine's Day says sexy present to me-and a hoover isn't quite that so I can see why you might be a bit askance at it. I think in this case it's the thought, which was a nice one, that counts .

DeltaAlphaDelta79 · 15/02/2023 08:20

I had to replace our downstairs toilet one year, and the day I installed it happened to be Feb 14th! DW often tells people that one Valentine's day I bought her a new toilet 😂

SpringIntoChaos · 15/02/2023 08:28

My ExH once bought me an iron for Valentines. I HATE ironing (which he knew) and he ironed his own clothes (I never bothered to iron mine 🤣).

The old iron had been spitting black water and he wanted a new one...but wrapped it up and gave it to me! The same year I'd bought him an F1 driving experience day!

He's an ex for a reason!
