Am I being insane?

Newborn baby, born a bit early, only weighs 5lbs. I'm so scared of him getting ill, I've kept my reception age child home due to Scarlett fever doing the rounds. I stopped him going to a soft-play party as it was with school friends and I was still worried about the Scarlett fever. My mum has a cold so I've not let her meet him but now my husband feels like he's got a cold so I'm not letting him hold the baby. It got really stressful tonight at bed time as my older child wanted me to do it and newborn can't be put down or screams! I'm worried I'm being insane as he really wants to go to school and I'm keeping him home but I just feel like whilst my baby is so tiny I need to keep them safe. What do I do 😩

My ds was born at 36 weeks. Take home weight was 4-12. His favourite place was inside dd 8's dressing gown! Please allow your dc to bond with each other. And speak to your mw about the birth etc. Help you adjust maybe. And relax. My ds is now 8 and a very healthy boy!

They’ll be fine try not to worry too much, my son was 2.5 weeks early and had 2 heart defects and was on feeding tube for 8 months. My older child still went to school and parties etc. consultants and nurses said can’t wrap him in cotton wool. He’s 4 and thriving now xx

So he was born at 37 weeks? Sorry if I've read that wrong but that's full term?

You are not insane, of course you feel protective of your beautiful little baby. And fine to have DH sleep in a different room, but in my opinion not letting him hold the baby is too far and means your baby is missing out on prescious bonding time with his dad, which is important too. I would have really struggled not being allowed to hold my week old baby. I think that your older child going into school is also fine, and will give you a bit more breathing space, enabling you to keep your own immune system up and use that school time to focus on new baby. Congratulations! I hope that the panic recedes as you watch him get bigger and stronger.

I have this fear for my daughter she's 4 months old, it is getting easier, you are doing what you think is right for the baby. Try not to panic, you are doing a fantastic job.

Try and enjoy your baby, I know the fear of illness and what not is crippling sometimes, but don't let that ruin your first few weeks with your baby, it's okay to be worried, just don't go OTT like I did and regret it 😫
