Vegan diet and high oestrogen content for women (and men)

unsureatthispoint · 31/01/2023 10:57

I sometimes watch influencers to wind down in the evenings or for the aesthetics and light entertainment. A few young ones (30ish) are vegan and are now doing 'Veganuary', providing recipe ideas, saying what they eat 'in a week' and buying vegan 'on a budget' to help with the cost of living crisis.

Most of the dishes they have seem to be based on tofu, soy sauce or pulses. Shouldn't they be concerned about the amount of oestrogenic foods they consume? For some of them, their male partners seem to have been influenced too and are now long-time vegans. Is so much oestrogen healthy for men? The amount of goitrogenic vegetables like kale, broccoli and cauliflower could be problematic also for the thyroid?

The multitude of expensive supplements they seem to take in order to cover their nutritional needs are also based on pulses which only adds up to the issue IMO.

What do others think?

www.nurse.com/blog/caffeines-effects-on-estrogen-levels-vary-by-ethnicity/

Total caffeine intake was calculated from coffee, black tea, green tea and caffeinated soda. Findings differed slightly when the source of caffeine was considered individually. Consuming 200 milligrams or more of caffeine from coffee mirrored the findings for overall caffeine consumption, with Asians having elevated estrogen levels, whites having lower estrogen levels and the results for blacks not statistically significant.

This is what I mean by you are not a scientist.

This article was copied from a journal published for entertainment by a organisation which is the mouthpiece of the american food industry.

You can tell straight away it isn't a piece of scientific research, by its division of the population along the lines of "Black" "white" and "asian" - terms which have no scientific validity, and are purely political. Just the wording here immediately flags this up as not a credible source

The range of genetic diversity among people with skin colour that can be classified as "black" is so great that in a genetic comparison, they would all find themselves more closely related to all northern european coloured people than some other "black" people

In other words, medically and scientifically, there is no such classification as "black"- it is literally just a skin colour. Any African population from anywhere, moving into a temperate climate would become "white" within a couple of thousand years. English people were all black a few thousand years ago. These classifications would not exist in this form in a genuine piece of medical research

This is what I mean when I say you are just believing everything you read, whatever the source, whatever the quality - and this is why you believe rubbish like soya raises oestrogen levels and might make men transgender.

True, I like reading and listening to different sources and also paying attention to my own symptoms and signs I see in those around me. I'm perfectly capable of drawing my own conclusions and that has been quite useful throughout my life and has kept me quite healthy.

Why are you so triggered that some don't take 'science' pieces that are very often heavily influenced by funders' agendas as gospel?

Also, what was 'science' in 1960 has probably at some point been 'debunked' and it will all most probably be proved right again. It all goes round in circles. Does that shock you?

Claiming you know estrogen levels is affected by soy because your boobs hurt despite all the scientific evidence which shows this isn’t true is like claiming you can prevent cancer by eating a sausage a day. It’s just beyond stupid.

Greblegable · 01/02/2023 08:37

Op why aren’t you on here posting your concerns at all the young men who can’t go a meal without red meat who are at much high a risk for cancer and heart disease because of it?

So I should put up with my boobs hurting and take pain medication because I should believe 'the science' and not question anything? That is what I would call stupid, for sure

again, this is like saying “ well my back feels much better after drinking orange juice- should I keep having a bad back and listen to the science or should I drink my orange juice and cure my bad back?”

i mean how much soy do you think you were consuming to affect your estrogen levels? Breast cancer and gynecamastia would be a huge concern for entire cultures and vegans if that was true - do you really think the whole scientific community would ignore that? Do you also think the covid vaccine had a micro chip in it?

I have explained why I am "triggered" by people repeating this

Because I have oestrogen nourished cancers, and regularly get people worrying about me drinking soya milk, and trying to interfere with it. It becomes a huge issue in my life, not because many people believe soya causes oestrogen, but because enough people do for it to become a repetitive source of stress, both for me, and for people who care about me - at a time when life is stressful enough.

We buy soya milk because so many MEN ( masculine, testosterone fuelled men ) in the family are lactose intolerant. None of them have too much oestrogen, in spite of decades of soya milk! In some cases nearly a century of it!

This is not in anyway related to my cancer - which is genetic

Also, as a science teacher, I find it upsetting and frustrating that people have so little understanding of what is meant by "science" - no I am not "shocked" - I am upset that people are so easily influenced and misguided and lied to, and tricked into thinking they are somehow being clever by disregarding real science, without having any understanding about who is influencing them or why.

I have post graduate research qualifications, I have years of experience in research, I have published peer reviewed papers, I understand exactly who funds what research and why, and how the whole system works.

But people who pedal this stupid soya milk nonsense do not understand what they are talking about, or how science works, or how to evaluate research

I have already pointed out to you how pointless and shallow they research you just quoted is, using catagories of human that dont even exist on a scientific level - and you are still trying to say reading random crap online, and judging by your own "feelings" are in any way comparable to the combined weight of worldwide scientific evidence against you.

The thing is, you are deeply entrenched and invested in this fantasy that you have stumbled across the reason for men becoming women, and to be honest, I have engaged as far as I have the energy and patience.

You just carry on being ignorant - its a free country - you are allowed to be, that is fine

I just hope, that anyone who reads thread wont be influenced by you, I dont think they will be, because most people know you are pushing a baseless fiction

Fantastic post although I’m sorry for everything you have been/are going through through. I think we all know the agenda of the OP here. It looks like there’s no one certain people aren’t willing to throw under a bus for their personal objectives.

No, if soy does not work for you don't consume it.
We are all different, even identical twins are different.

O a population level, soy is good for you. You get painful boobs, I get anaphylaxis. You and I are the weirdos. The vast majority of people see benefits from replacing dairy with soy.

Not sure if you’ll see this, very sorry about your cancers 💐

This is a fantastic post 👏 and hopefully reassures anyone worrying about consuming soya.

TheFormidableMrsC · 01/02/2023 11:57

I am a former breast cancer patient. I have a friend who has also had it. She was told to avoid soy products. I was not. It appears the advice is mixed.

I thought the fear of harm from phytoestrogens was based on very old research which was largely debunked a few years ago?

I don't know, but whenever I have soy milk I can rather quickly feel the negative effect akin to excess oestrogen (headache, moods, etc) Maybe it affects some more than others? But I would be nervous about this, especially if I was a man or for children/boys

Maybe it’s your confirmation bias

Ncgirlseriously · 01/02/2023 12:51

Google confirmation bias OP. You’re misinformed but you want to believe it so you’re doubling down.

sleepybuthappy · 01/02/2023 13:02

Nimbostratus100 is totally right. I also had oestrogen linked breast cancer and have read as much as I can about soy products. There is no evidence that they increase oestrogen levels in humans and I believe the oestrogen in soy is a different type from the oestrogen found in our bodies. In fact the research seems to show that on balance soy products like tofu have an overall protective effect when it comes to cancer.
Furthermore - soy products don't have to form the basis of a vegan diet and it makes no sense to completely reject a whole diet because one element disagrees - you never hear of people saying I could never be carnivore because bacon disagrees with me. There is no question now that eating meat is linked to numerous health risks. And yes the majority of soy products are fed to animals that humans then eat.

Orangepolentacake · 01/02/2023 17:13

unsureatthispoint · 31/01/2023 17:46

You are talking about “science” that has been thoroughly debunked

Research is expensive. Someone has to be investing heavily on this 'debunking' business. Research results are neither here nor there for me when reality is telling us something different

What do you think of vaccines?

🍿

Notcreative · 01/02/2023 20:32

I am a vegan (for the last year or so, previously veggie for years and years). I have no interest in trying to convert others. I feel so much better on this diet (appreciate that is purely anecdotal and doesn't necessarily apply to others). I have also looked at research studies on soy, and it seems to my (lay) mind that it's fine to eat, so I do. And very nice it is too!
What I don't get is, despite the idea that vegans are trying to convert everyone else, that in my experience (and it appears others' too), everyone else is trying to question us all of the time. Just be happy with your choices and leave us to ours!
