Asking for advice!

my throat has been sore since starting my new asthma inhaler around a month ago now.

im not quite sure why- I’m presuming it’s a mistake but with my technique but I’ve followed all the videos and advice I found online, and I’m using my spacer with it too. I also brush my teeth and swish my mouth with mouthwash and gargle etc after taking it.

has anyone else has this? Is there a way to stop or prevent it?

Which inhaler is it? Do you gargle and spit it out?

LIZS · 28/01/2023 19:45

I often get sore throats from mine.

Yeah I brush my teeth and gargle with mouthwash and swish it round my mouth, and sometimes I do it with water too x

Is it the Nextinhaler that's the dry powder or the spray? I'm on Fostair and it's been brilliant but if I don't use the spacer or stupidly don't take it for a couple of days I'll end up with a sore throat.
I've just had my asthma review and the sprays are being fazed out and replaced with the NEXThaler which is dry powder and no need for a spacer.

It’s just the normal spray inhaler. That’s interesting about being changed to nexthalers- I’ve never seen them before!

not sure if it’s the fostair or my technique using the inhaler or spacer-I went back to basics and watched videos advising how to properly use the inhaler and spacer and I’ve followed all the instructions but for the last month my throat has been so sore from it, it’s so frustrating.

Steroid containing inhalers (eg. Fostair) cause throat candida. You will need Nystatin drops to treat this and gargle the back of your throat, not the mouth with water after each inhaler use to prevent recurrence.

I've had oral thrush from my fostair. I did not have a nice time. Like you I made sure to brush / rinse my mouth afterwards but still managed to get it.

pineappleupsidedowncake1 · 28/01/2023 22:47

Oh no, I hope I’m not getting thrush although I think that could be it. I do everything as I’m supposed to and I gargle right into the back of my throat but I had noticed I was getting a gummy sort of feeling in my mouth, it gets better after teeth brushing but gradually gets worse as the day goes on and it’s like a furry gummy sort of feeling, urgh I hope it’s not thrush.

My doc warned me I could get thrush in my throat.

lurchermummy · 29/01/2023 09:41

I was told you can get fungal infections with Fostaur / have you had an asthma check up lately?

GoT1904 · 29/01/2023 10:54

The chemist can check ? I went in and had to tell them that because of my inhalers I'd given myself oral thrush, then my df downstairs thrush, he then gave it me. I was mortified. 😂
