To think these houses will soon look dated?

Our neighbour has a detached 1930s red brick house that he slapped grey rendering over, outside uplighters, plantation shutters and grey pvc windows.
AIBU for thinking this will be the avocado baths of the future that many people dislike?

Definitely! I always think this when I see colourful cladding on houses

SweetSakura · 28/01/2023 18:55

Yes our neighbour has done this, it looks awful

Littlebutload · 28/01/2023 18:55

It kills me a little bit inside when I see red brick houses destroyed like that with render or paint.

LindorDoubleChoc · 28/01/2023 18:56

Yes. Why would you paint your house dark grey? horrible!

mathanxiety · 28/01/2023 18:56

Yes, absolutely.

And you can compromise the brick by painting over it.

PurBal · 28/01/2023 18:57

The poor house

YukoandHiro · 28/01/2023 18:58

Plantation shutters are easily removed if they're not your style, but I agree about the rest and also think it's terrible for long term value of the property. I've seen a few period houses near us destroyed in exactly this way. It already looks a bit cheap IMO.

megletthesecond · 28/01/2023 18:58

They already look dated tbh.

onemouseplace · 28/01/2023 18:58

It's the new pebbledash.

Jo586 · 28/01/2023 18:59

Depends if, it's done well, looks good. Better than worn out bricks

UWhatNow · 28/01/2023 19:00

Yes agreed. The everything-grey trend is very ugly and even more of a shame when they take a period property and completely ruin it.

dotdotdotdash · 28/01/2023 19:00

I agree. And often with grey gravel out the front too! It’s a bad look.

minionsrule · 28/01/2023 19:00

Its very popular round my way too, breaks my soul a little bit everytime I see yet another house has had it done.
It will be like the fake tutor wooden rendering on the front of houses we saw in the 80's

Spendonsend · 28/01/2023 19:01

Grey isnt my favourite but it can be painted over.

Ive spent ages trying work out how to insulate my 1930s house when we had one. It wasnt suitable for cavity wall, internal would make the rooms small. There were some insulating renders that were supposed to be good.

As pp have said, you can take down the plantation shutters, but all the dark grey rendering, windows and doors will be harder to undo and very unpleasant to live with. Some of our neighbours have done this and their houses look so ugly and foreboding.

mogtheexcellent · 28/01/2023 19:02

The render will not be great for the bricks if they were in good condition as any removal will damage them.

Lovely large Victorian house near me 1.5million, painted cream with dark grey window frames (look like ££££ expensive replica sash windows) was on market for ages and finally sold for below asking. The new owners have just had the windows painted white. Cant do much about the bland walls though. Looks like they are planting climbers to break it down a bit.

WendyAndClyde · 28/01/2023 19:02

Yes I was thinking recently that the neighbours is already starting to look dated. Which has completely put me off as I did consider it myself at one point.

OutForBreakfast · 28/01/2023 19:03

It is fine if you like it, everyone has different tastes. But it seems a trend that I think will quickly date.

rwalker · 28/01/2023 19:03

Grey is the equivalent of 80’s plastic wood grain windows

OutForBreakfast · 28/01/2023 19:04

I admit I do not see the point of the external uplighters either. But they are easily removed.

There's a beautiful Edwardian detached house near me, they've put dark grey render on the outside walls, just ruining the lovely stonework. They've also ripped out the beautiful wooden front door and put an ugly grey one on with a massive vertical metal bar on as some sort of mad handle. Looks like a Stasi headquarters.

CosyScentedCandles · 28/01/2023 19:08

YANBU.

We never buy anything “fashionable”
for our house. We just decorate it the way that we like. Anything to “now” will look dated almost as soon as it is finished. See also: media walls with fake fireplaces installed under the TV

MissWings · 28/01/2023 19:08

I really like it and prefer it to drab old samey bricks.

MyBloodyMaryneedsmoreTabasco · 28/01/2023 19:13

So many houses in my area has this exact look done 5 years ago. All the people renovating now seem to be cleaning up brickwork instead and it looks lovely.
