To think these houses will soon look dated?

Our neighbour has a detached 1930s red brick house that he slapped grey rendering over, outside uplighters, plantation shutters and grey pvc windows.
AIBU for thinking this will be the avocado baths of the future that many people dislike?

OP posts:

Meh. You can't stop doing stuff you like NOW just in case someone says it's unfashionable in the future.

Most things go through fashions, so if you like it now, enjoy it noe.

OP - you're guarenteed to have stuff that has dated in your home decor. Everyone does.

RudsyFarmer · 28/01/2023 19:16

I don’t know about the outside but seeing grey interiors just make me so depressed. Bring back the Magnolia!!

megletthesecond · 28/01/2023 19:20

Surely it's better to have the bricks re-pointed than covered?

Apparantly Magnolia and cream are Essex Hmm

Looks at pale lemon and biscotti walls in Essex house ........

PurpleRaindancing · 28/01/2023 19:21

Yea I agree with you OP

Same as the faux Tudor styling from 1980/90s...

IhearyouClemFandango · 28/01/2023 19:22

It only suits very coastal properties.

PurpleFlower1983 · 28/01/2023 19:22

Is the pebbledash of the future and will cost people thousands to get back to brick!

Benjispruce4 · 28/01/2023 19:23

Houses have been painted/rendered for decades. Live a seaside painted terrace.

RalIy · 28/01/2023 19:23

Yes, they already look dated. In addition to looking awfully tacky, people are seriously devaluing their homes by indulging in this trend.

It’s so sad when people rip out original features - in particular doors, windows and fireplaces - only to replace then with PVC crap. Thankfully no one on my red brick street has done this yet.

Benjispruce4 · 28/01/2023 19:26

People thought we were mad when we removed the uvpc front door and replaced with wood. I love to choose new paint colours for my front door and door furniture.

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 28/01/2023 19:28

Well if you have a single skin 1930s brick house (like we do!) Adding external insulation and render really helps with the cold (and damp). We have done it and have a vv pale grey (off white really but on the grey scale rather than cream scale).
Unless its colour through it can (and will) need to be painted so clolour can be changed.
I do agree about grey windows tho.... not keen...

I love those, if they're colourful. It's the dark grey that's so awful.
I drive past a house where they've painted the render primrose yellow, and the door and window frames dark green. It looks so different and really welcoming!

Wearegoingtoneedabiggerboat · 28/01/2023 19:31

i live on the coast and a lot of houses are rendered and have been for decades. It’s not really a new thing.

dzdzdxdz · 28/01/2023 19:31

I thought exactly the same thing OP, the future avocado bathroom.

Are they all dark grey?
The ones by the coast we go to are light or bright colours.

Livelovebehappy · 28/01/2023 19:37

Isn’t this always the way though? There’s fashion fads all the time. Grey has already served its time, as far as I’m aware, and was considered dated over the last year or so. But I like it anyway, not because it was the ‘latest decor craze’ but I just genuinely like the colour grey as it goes with lots of the brighter colours too. I had grey before it was even popular, and still like it now. People can be really snobby about home decor, but I think if you like it, then go for it. There will always be someone who likes it when it comes to sell.

cherry2727 · 28/01/2023 19:37

It kills me a little bit inside when I see red brick houses destroyed like that with render or paint

This!!

Benjispruce4 · 28/01/2023 19:38

Yea but paint can be changed easily.

Wheredidtheselotapego · 28/01/2023 19:38

I prefer the look of brick but If it’s done with proper insulation to improve energy efficiency then fair enough as that’s a sensible way to insulate a solid brick house.

if it’s done purely for aesthetics with cheap render that doesn’t let the brick breathe, then yeah that’s going to date badly…

MysteryBelle · 28/01/2023 19:41

I agree. A crime against architecture and decency.

KimberleyClark · 28/01/2023 19:41

I live on an estate of 1930s red brick semis and so many people have removed their original stained glass window transoms and doors and replaced them with plain, or worse leaded ones. Breaks my heart.

OddBoots · 28/01/2023 19:42

That kind of dark grey, it's all very 'dystopian chic'

User76765 · 28/01/2023 19:42

It’s the grey that’s the issue. Our skies are often grey. Grey houses against grey skies look dull and horrible.

ReamsOfCheese · 28/01/2023 19:42

The rendering itself isn't an issue but grey? It'll look like one of those horrible concrete houses that they're knocking down all over Scotland as they've reached the end of their lives.

BabyofMine · 28/01/2023 19:43

Oh god I don’t like it either but….

I love the 1980s fake Tudor houses 🙈🙈🙈😂
