Team ‘re-org’

A colleague has just been asked his views on a ‘re-org’ and how to ‘streamline’ the team. My first thought was job cuts but he didn’t seem to take it this way and seemed to think they were questioning work distribution across the team. Does ‘re-org’ always mean job losses or it sometimes just about re-structuring things?

I wouldn't be too worried about "re-org". "Streamlining" does sound a bit concerning.

Last one of ours involved restructuring, but no job losses. Current one involves redundancies (including mine.)

We did an organisation wide re-org last year and didn’t lose a single job/person, though some roles did change a bit in focus - with lots of consultation with the people affected - and a number of new roles were created to increase capacity

Wish they had been a bit clearer about what they are thinking. I guess I will have to raise with my manager next week

Are working processes convoluted? Could they be streamline?

Goldenperfume · 27/01/2023 16:06

@Hankunamatata There’s definitely room for improvement in terms of processes, working more closely together and workload distribution

Re-orgs don't have to mean job losses. Often do, sadly.

Streamlining is all about context really. If people are talking about streamlining processes then fair enough, but if people are talking about streamlining the organisation that is definitely a euphemism for redundancies.

Goldenperfume · 27/01/2023 16:17

Yeah it wasn’t clear what they were looking to streamline as they talked about “streamlining things”.
the org chart was brought up but that could be about re-org roles or it could be about cutting jobs I guess…

Streamlining is always a worrying word as it usually means cuts of some kind - whether that’s people or tasks is a different matter.

we reorganise in my organisation a lot and it’s usually just teams working differently and in different ways so people get moved about, very rarely do people/roles get cut and it’s usually naturally if they do (promotions/role moves/leavers etc)

no point worrying until you have more info - easier said than done I know.
