Circumcision

SouthAfricanmuminUK · 26/01/2023 18:02

I was thoroughly abused by several English mums of my acquaintance for having my sons circumcised at birth. Although I did my research and found it to be better from a number of perspectives, nothing would convince them it was reasonable. I am wondering if they will retract their accusations now that it has been revealed that Diana, saintliest of all mothers, had both her boys circumcised ...

Ooh. A thread for people to openly abuse other families, expose ignorance and cause division in the UK.

How refreshing.🙄

Nearly all male gay porn features uncircumcised men. Take that for what it’s worth.

Probably so you can "see" things better, just like how women are usually completely shaved. Also if it was American as that seems the 'norm' there if TV is to go by.
It seems like a very outdated practice, Iike many things now. Accordingly to my DH it's a disadvantage when having sex as if you have been you're desensitised much more (which makes sense if you think about it).

Something being popular in gay porn doesn't make that popular thing desirable to do to a baby.
It's a bit fucked it of you think it does at all tbh.

Floomobal · 27/01/2023 01:18

It’s an appalling mutilation.

Doesn’t make it less horrific and cruel just because some rich people do it

Bagsundermyeyestoday · 27/01/2023 01:18

Circumcision will be something that will be looked back in horror that it was allowed, just because people have been doing it doesn't mean it's ok. Why would you chop off a part of your body for no reason? It's there to serve a purpose! The human body is a truly amazing thing.

SD1978 · 27/01/2023 01:21

There is no research that can justify genital mutilation at birth, with no medical need, regardless of who else may have done it.

Carlycat · 27/01/2023 01:26

In certain religious circles the blood is licked off the newly cut foreskin Confused

TooBigForMyBoots · 27/01/2023 01:56

It's an appalling mutilation.

According to who?

20% of UK men are circumcised.. 1/3 of the global male population are circumcised. If men were that bothered about being circumcised, they'd stop doing it.🤷‍♀️

ConcordeOoter · 27/01/2023 01:58

It can have some medical/hygiene benefits, and not having it done can lead to... mechanical complications for some men that can affect quality of life or (rarely) even be dangerous. Human reproductive apparatus is error-prone sometimes.

No idea how babies feel about it, but not all that nice to get it done as an adult. If it really is the case that there is no lasting trauma, it may be better to have it done young

In an ideal world the men of the family should have some idea of mechanically necessary it will be for the new male, but I don't know how you start that conversation.

RLScott · 27/01/2023 02:06

Circumcision, genital mutilation, is wrong on every level.

Scarred genitalia, and inflicted on a child who has no say on the matter. It’s morally wrong (unintentionally so in many cases) and a bloody disgusting act.

Humans can be so backward.

Ericaequites · 27/01/2023 02:16

I said uncircumcised.

PurpleSky300 · 27/01/2023 02:17

Who on earth would change their views about circumcision on the basis of what one woman did 40 years ago?

One of my relatives had to be circumcised for medical reasons at the onset of puberty, when he was about 12. The recovery was painful, couldn't play sports at school for a while, found the whole thing embarrassing etc even though he did understand why it had to be done. I don't understand why anybody would choose to put a tiny baby through it for no good reason.

MavisMcMinty · 27/01/2023 02:20

As a nurse, atheist, and non-mother, I have no idea how any mother could hand over her precious infant son to have his foreskin cut off.

knitnerd90 · 27/01/2023 02:21

circumcision rates have dropped significantly in the USA in recent decades especially in the Western US, so while it's the norm for adults, you can't make that assumption for babies.

What Diana did 40 years ago isn't necessarily reflective of what we do or should do today.

(I would like to point out that there's a history of circumcision arguments, especially surrounding legal bans, being antisemitic and in recent years Islamophobic. Given the number of Jews, it does bother me when the conversation turns to us.)

Why are you focusing on the mother?🤨 Fathers play a significant part too, even taking the lead. And they are likely to be circumcised themselves.🤷‍♀️

MavisMcMinty · 27/01/2023 02:59

I’m focusing on the mother because she’s generally the one cleaved to her newborn baby, filled with fierce uncontrollable love and infatuation. Handing him over to have his genitals cut for no good earthly reason would seem a very odd choice to me.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 27/01/2023 03:05

BabyOnBoard90 · 26/01/2023 22:47

The cognitive dissonance. Seeing it perfectly fine for medical "treatment" but it somehow it equates to a form of mutilation? Sigh

Having a testicle removed if there is a tumour in it is fine.. if you do it because of religion or looks then it is mutilation no? Or are you ok with parents just chopping off any old part of a baby?

MavisMcMinty · 27/01/2023 03:08

Ooh, having just re-read The Dark Tower and all the other associated Stephen King novels, I like your username @AllThingsServeTheBeam !

I finished it a few years ago and I am just about to start my journey again in prep for the new King release in September!! Sadly not a tower one!

Have you tried to understand it?

Or have you just imagined/thought/felt something and now believe it's true?

MavisMcMinty · 27/01/2023 04:12

What?

PissedOffAmericanWoman · 27/01/2023 04:31

I’m not sure if you’re just trying to stir people up but that’s a weird way to justify… well… ANYTHING. Good people (or sometimes seemingly good people) so bad things all the time. Although you didn’t deserve to be mistreated for it. We do the best we can with the information we have.

What bit of my post did you not understand?

mathanxiety · 27/01/2023 04:53

Didn't take long for the personal abuse to be launched in your direction, did it?

Amazing, considering it is a legal procedure carried out by doctors, who have taken the hippocratic oath, in safe conditions, and there are millions and millions of men all over the world leading happy, healthy lives despite the alleged horror of it all...

You may regret starting this thread, OP. Otoh, it may well serve as an indication of what happens when people lose all sense of proportion and get completely carried away, denying science, denying hundreds or even thousands of years of medical history, denying present reality. So there's that.

mathanxiety · 27/01/2023 05:02

@piedbeauty

Personal question here, but do you have a dick?
