Circumcision

I was thoroughly abused by several English mums of my acquaintance for having my sons circumcised at birth. Although I did my research and found it to be better from a number of perspectives, nothing would convince them it was reasonable. I am wondering if they will retract their accusations now that it has been revealed that Diana, saintliest of all mothers, had both her boys circumcised ...

@Jibberty 👏 👏 I think you're spot on!

dogdaydown · 27/01/2023 09:47

@BabyOnBoard90 shall I cut off part of your ears? The lobes, I prefer the look of your ears like that!

Jesus we've even stopped allowing cropping of dogs ears (quite rightly), yet some think it's still ok to alter the look of babies.

Madness!

My son was circumcised last year, age 17. It was for a medical reason,but given his age and the scarring afterwards, I wouldn't recommend the procedure.

My friends son had to be circumcised aged five, very unpleasant procedure.

Poor little lad, it was for medical reasons of course.

I won't change my mind and disagree with the decision any parent makes to do it, with the exception of genuine medical need. Having discussed this with my adult sons, they are glad I left them alone and didn't make a permanent choice on their behalf.

TooBigForMyBoots · 27/01/2023 05:25

How many of the 20% of UK men who have been circumcised suffered trauma and feel they've been violated?

My husband wishes his parents had left him alone.

I believe that circumcision should only be done when an informed decision can be made, i.e. when the child/man can fully understand the risks/possible outcome. As many others have said, the foreskin keeps the glans moisturised and protected, it has a function, it's not just a flap of skin.

The only reason for circumcision should be medical need.

On the topic of medical need, both my DS's had phimosis, and the opening of the foreskin was extremely tight, could not be retracted at all to clean and would balloon when they had a wee. There was a risk of infection and other issues so the consultant recommended circumcision. I provisionally agreed, and then went home to do some research, which is when I learnt about the potential negatives of circumcision (obviously a lot of boys/men are absolutely fine with it).

I read about preputioplasty, where a slit is cut into the foreskin so that it can be retracted, but the foreskin remains intact, doing it's job. The consultant wasn't very keen on doing this, but he agreed. He wasn't keen because of potential scar tissue and the chance of the slit re-healing and them needing circumcision down the line.

10 years on, my DS's say that everything is fine, looks fine, and works normally.

Just mentioning this as an alternative to circumcision for medical need, bit off topic I know.

Eh?

Are you a little confused duck?

Swap testicle for another body part that needs removing due to medical need.

Skin =/= organ. Duckling

BabyOnBoard90 · 27/01/2023 10:24

And the irony that there are so many people with sons who had to be circumcised for medical reasons 😂😂😂

A finger? Is that an organ? Your ear? An eye? A breast? A toe?

Your argument is shit.

Skin is your biggest organ. It is definitely an organ.

Hardly, you are on a thread about circumsicm which is likely to have more people commenting about their experiences of it. Most peoples experience of it in the UK (which is where the majority of mumsnetters are from) is through medical circumcism. In the same way if I were to post a thread about testicular torsion for instance I'd probably get a lot of comments from people who knew someone who had suffered from it. That doesn't mean it's not actually rare, it just means that people more likely to comment on things that they have experience off.

If Diana had her boys circumcised then she was just as wrong as any other mother who had the same done.

Yup. Disgusting mutilating a child's body without their consent when there is no medical reason for it.

Notaflippinclue · 27/01/2023 11:00

I'm married to a man who is and have a son who is circumcised, I also work with mens penis on a daily basis, most have not a clue about hygiene and to put it crudely we often find 'cottage cheese' up there, I often wonder about what their wives have had to put up with.

It's not comparable to internal organs, that much is common sense.

Comparing an eye or ear to foreskin is your compelling point? Lol

@BabyOnBoard90 you made yourself look ridiculous with your incredulition that people with experience of male circumcision have commented on this thread. GrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrin

Also is it ok if I lob off your ear lobe? You'll look better and it isn't a real bodily requirement?

If you think an ear lobe is comparable to a penile foreskin, then I can't help you with the problems that ailing you
