To start correcting people on my name?

ThatsNotMyFingName · 26/01/2023 13:35

NC’d.

My name is Alexandra. Not a hard name to pronounce or spell. Not a weird, unique or “strange” name. I was born early 90’s and I feel it’s quite common with women in my age bracket.

I am constantly being called Alexander. Which is the male version.

Some teachers used to call it me when I was at school. I get called it in the doctors surgery, when they call my name over the tannoy. When speaking on the phone and I’m giving my details they refer to me as it.

I get called it at work, even though my full name is in my email address and signature.

I politely tell people my actual name and how to pronounce it. But it’s falling on deaf ears.

I feel like shouting at people “For fucks sake my name is Alexandra. It’s really not hard to pronounce”.

Is it unreasonable to be this annoyed and want to start harshly correcting people?

I think Tamsin is a beautiful name. I learned recently that it’s the (Cornish?) female form of Thomas, ie a contraction of Thomasina. I love the history in names like that

MortimerTheCat · 26/01/2023 21:28

I have the opposite issue with Tamsin/Tasmin, I really struggle to say Tasmin, and have to really stop myself from saying Tamsin.

I have a friend called Tanya, and loads of people say Tarnya. Where did the R come from? She always corrects them, and if they continue she will add an R sound in to their name until they stop 😂

Allthegoodusernamesareused · 26/01/2023 21:29

Ahhh OP you have my sympathy. I have a name that's pretty unusual in England (though common in the country it originates) and no one can ever pronounce it. To top it off, my parents decided to use a nn for me that is commonly a diminutive of a very common English first name, so I constantly get called that name instead. It's infuriating!

Omg yes I’ve also had Alexandrina. And Alexandrea, and Alec, like Alec Baldwin. So f*ing annoying 😅

Ive also had emails at work referring to me as Alex-Sandra or Aleksandra.

Arghh! My boss continually corrected the colleague and did say one day ffs what's wrong with you it's not Alexander it's DRA!!! Haha. I said yep all woman here with these boobs. Imo it's bloody laziness 🙄

donquixotedelamancha · 26/01/2023 21:30

I’m sure the Lesleys around feel the same.

I doubt they get called Alexander much.

I have this issue, bit outing, but I am always astounded by the amount of people who actually DON'T KNOW that there are 2 versions, a male and a female. I have had many, many 'but isn't that a boy's name?' then it transpires they've apparently never heard of the name Alexandra. Bonkers. YANBU, it's really fucking annoying.

Yep 100%!

It was mostly at school and university people would say “Isn’t that a boys name?”

And the best one, at school we had a supply teacher in one day, he was French, and when reading out the register when I answered my “name”, he looked at me in shock and said. “Alexander .. you are a GIRL?” Yes sir, I am a f*ing girl, and that’s not my name 🙄

So weird that people haven’t heard of Alexandra before. I thought it was commonly known. Someone I know recently announced a baby girl with that name. I like it but couldn’t use it as too similar to my child’s name.

SmokyForTheWin · 26/01/2023 21:48

Talisin · 26/01/2023 16:38

Nope 😁It isn’t an unknown name but it’s never been particularly popular. Apparently the year it was at its most popular it was still 271st on the ONS most popular names list. There is a well known (in the UK) actress with the name now - I do wonder if subsequent children inflicted with the name have had an easier time of it because of her!

Tamsin/Tasmin?

My name is Lauren and I swear I've been called Laura more often than I've been called my actual name! People even do it in reply to emails, which have my name in the email address as well as in the signature 🙄

I was just coming to say my Sister has this exact situation!

It is such a gorgeous name. My little one was Thomasin at first but we later changed it to Tamsin. I love it but am now feeling very guilty 😆

ShutUpBaggyTits · 26/01/2023 21:56

YANBU

It's extremely rude not to take the time to spell / pronounce a person's name correctly.

I think you should correct them every time.

roarfeckingroarr · 26/01/2023 21:58

We share a name OP.

This drives me mad too. I also hate my name being shortened without someone first asking. It's not difficult to call someone by their name, it's basic courtesy.

LavenderLaughs · 26/01/2023 22:00

Don’t feel bad! She can always revert to Thomasin later if she wants to. Thomasin is so elegant, but perhaps hard for a youngster to carry off 🙂

I originally wanted Thomasina but DH forbade it! She suits the name so much - I’d be heartbroken if she changed it! It’s taken a while but finally MIL is not slipping out the occasional Tammy - which makes me grimace.

TheFireflies · 26/01/2023 22:11

mamas12 · 26/01/2023 16:24

To repeat offenders I would mispronounce their name back to them
hello Alexander
oh hello Steffan ( if name is Stephen)

I work in the family courts and there was one particular barrister who kept getting the children’s names wrong. I can’t remember the last time I called him by his actual name, it’s been a number of variations now. He knows exactly why.

MrsHughesPinny · 26/01/2023 22:12

People keep wanting to shorten my name and just do it without asking. (E.g Liz/Lizzy or Kate/Katie when your name is Elizabeth or Catherine). Drives me demented. It isn’t my name! The nickname versions sound really childish to me.

Ivecomeoutoflurking · 26/01/2023 22:14

Oh god yes, the amount of times the end of my name gets said with an A instead of an E. The spelling is right there in front of them IE not IA!!! Grrrrr!

mauvish · 26/01/2023 22:15

YANBU! My name is not British but it's been in use in mythology for a few millenia, and for long enough in the UK for people to know it, or so you'd think.

But time and time again I get a bloody ridiculous mispronounciation and every time, I feel as though everyone must think I'm pretty stupid if I have such a stupid sounding name. Yes, I correct them, every time. I just think people who can't recognise it must be very poorly educated ---

Worriednow21 · 26/01/2023 22:19

I also have a name that is 1 letter different to another name and I constantly get called the wrong name.
I correct people as its just plain rude to call someone by the wrong name

Wrongsideofpennines · 26/01/2023 22:20

My name ends in an A. There is another name that is spelt the same but ends in e. I get the e version all the bloody time. Even called it in emails when the sender has typed in my name in my email address, they've then written my name wrong in the email. Or I've signed my name and then they've replied saying thanks e name. So flippin rude.

SignOnTheWindow · 26/01/2023 22:22

Talisin · 26/01/2023 16:08

I changed my name at 18 because people always swapped the middle two letters around the first time they said it and it slowly drove me insane. Literally every teacher, doctor, anyone who saw my name written and had to say it, got it wrong. It was a slow drip, drip, drip from irritation to near homicidal rage after 18 years!

Was your old name Tamsin, by any chance? This happens to a friend of mine, too!

Tammy is a very different kettle of fish! I can’t go in to bat for Tammy 😂
