Worried about my sister vaping

My sister is 50. Stopped smoking 25 years ago. She recently tried a triple mango vape (?!) she now vapes all the time as she’s addicted to nicotine.

I said I couldn’t believe a 50 year old woman would start vaping! She then broke down saying how ashamed she felt, had felt depressed for several months and although she realised how incredibly stupid she’s been she said she actually really enjoyed doing this, she then said it’s taken her appetite away completely and as a result she’d lost quite a bit of weight (which is true).

should I be really worried about her? What should I do (if anything)?

I think you should leave her to it

While vaping may have some health disadvantages, it is certainly a great deal less harmful than smoking. We all have our vices and this one is fairly innocuous. I don't think she should feel ashamed, or stupid! Would you be this judgy if she was having a glass of wine every night? I'm sure it's less harmful than that would be. Leave her to it.

She’s an adult, you don’t need to do anything about it. I think it’s crazy that she’s started it after having been off cigarettes for so long, but it’s her choice.

GracePooleslaugh · 25/01/2023 22:22

Well would you have preferred her to start smoking again?

custardbear · 25/01/2023 22:25

She's clearly feeling guilty, but it's better than many other vices! .... or stress without sone outlet

LubaLuca · 25/01/2023 22:25

Leave her to it. I'd love to vape, I think it would be a good relaxant, and the only thing stopping me is the fact I'm a middle aged non-smoker so it would be difficult to explain why I started (and I avoid awkward conversations at all costs).

I totally get your sister. Vaping has a dramatic effect on my peri symptoms ( vanished). The spread disappeared overnight . Who know s what damage it causes but feeling like a potato was killing me. (Not a smoker ever before)
your sis may be a title overwhelmed with life or stressed? We all have our vices .

It's a vape not crack cocaine. You don't need to be doing anything.

That’s really interesting! How long did you vape for?

EmmaEmerald · 25/01/2023 22:35

Leave it

I smoke a couple a day now - well, not every day - started in lockdown. Strange to take up smoking at my age, yes, but who cares really. I enjoy it.

what does confuse me about vaping - apart from triple mango - is that there's no natural end, so that's a bit odd. But nicotine has a lot of benefits. I know they looked at its use in treatment for depression. It's rumoured that it's effective but no one in pharma wants to go down that road. Ditto ketamine, apparently. I have no experience of that!

Leave her alone.
