Scone abomination

AinmÁlainn · 25/01/2023 11:44

I picked up a scone for myself, raisin, natch. Kept it for a cuppa after a long and difficult meeting. I made the perfect cup of tea and the butter gods smiled on the spreadablility of the ideal amount. I took a delicious bite. Only to find that it wasn't a raisin scone, it was chocolate chip and the scone itself was orange flavoured. What sort of monster has taken over my favourite bakery counter?

People used to queue for the chocolate chip ones at my work but I always thought it was an abomination.

SweetSakura · 25/01/2023 12:10

I think this thread should be reported to Mumsnet so they can add a trigger warning

TheEponymousGrub · 25/01/2023 12:11

banana flavoured croissants

Oh christ, stop!

AinmÁlainn · 25/01/2023 12:37

I think even the mention of banana croissants has wiped out the horror of the scone.

I'm a huge fan of oranges. Bigger fan of chocolate. In the right context they are good together. Neither is suitable for a scone. I'm not usually a savoury scone enthusiast but the double cheeses on a cheese scone could win me over.

And for those looking to hunt down the perpetrators, it was a cafe sol scone in Dunnes stores, so only Irish readers need to consider becoming militant.

Well I thought you were going to say that Butlers Pantry had gone rogue or HORROR that Avoca had introduced them.

Thank god it was just Dunnes.

But, Yabu for using the word 'natch' which I last saw in Just Seventeen magazine in 1993. 😉

darjeelingrose · 25/01/2023 12:59

Well obviously the devil himself made that. And here was I thinking the most repulsive disgusting thing that it could be was a foul cheese scone. This does sound worse. Sue for them to pay for counselling.

vitahelp · 25/01/2023 13:02

I was greeted by one of these abominations at an afternoon tea once. I'd put jam and cream on it only to discover it was choc chip, it was awful. It was one of the more expensive afternoon teas I've been on, at a Hilton no less.

SwordToFlamethrower · 25/01/2023 13:03

I agree! I have to resort to baking my own these days 😩

Acommonreader · 25/01/2023 13:05

Sending sympathy OP. I’ve never got over the trauma of being served a pot of margarine with a cream tea many years ago. It looked a bit different but assuming it was clotted cream I slathered it on the scone. I love scones but this experience is always in the back of my mind.

PuttingDownRoots · 25/01/2023 13:07

A once had a lemon scone served with cream and lemon curd. It was lovely.

I love a chocolate orange muffin. But not scone....

BronwenFrideswide · 25/01/2023 13:07

Thoughts and prayers for you @AinmÁlainn you have indeed suffered an abomination of the scone world.

Tubbyinthehottub · 25/01/2023 13:07

I think it sounds nice! Blush There should be more variations on scones, like how there are a thousand different types of hot cross bun these days.

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 25/01/2023 13:07

Cunts.

mackthepony · 25/01/2023 13:08

Sacrilege

pelargoniums · 25/01/2023 13:08

Sounds good, I might make some. Milk or dark chocolate? YABU for not naming the thread sconbomination.

oh! Might make some with Terry's chocolate orange chunks! Then marmalade and clotted cream…

mamabear715 · 25/01/2023 13:10

Omg @Acommonreader - I can TASTE that marg.. ugh.. who on EARTH would do that?
@AinmÁlainn I used to like Dunnes when they were in England. Am sorely disappointed now.

pristinesurfacesGBTD · 25/01/2023 13:10

Name and shame the scone defiler - bleugh 😝

oviraptor21 · 25/01/2023 13:13

I'm with you OP. The number of times I've bought a standard item only to discover it has been tampered with in some way - the disappointment is enormous.
If shops insist on selling alternative versions they need to label them very very clearly.

Broken23 · 25/01/2023 13:13

I used to make apricot and white chocolate scones. They were good.

ditalini · 25/01/2023 13:13

I'm a Calvinist scone eater. My preference is no fruit, but if fruit then butter only, no jam. If plain, then butter and/or jam. I can just about tolerate a treacle scone (no jam).

Can not be arsed with cream. Spare me your devils-work jam/cream or cream/jam debates. No cream at all!

Chocolate is an ABOMINATION!

I'm naturally suspicious of savoury scones.

Beachsidesunset · 25/01/2023 13:13

I saw a banana-filled pasty in a pasty shop. In Cornwall. I combusted, spontaneously.

Woo-ooo 👻

Also an abomination!
