Only poor people get the bus…

..I was told yesterday by a close relative. In the context of mocking me.

I get a bus to work. My bus stop is literally outside my house and ten minutes later it drops me off outside my work. I pay £70 a month for this.

If I drive to work it costs petrol plus £135 a month parking fees, and the closest two car parks are each a ten minute walk from work. It also takes longer to drive because of the one way system/bus lanes. It’s a no brainer.

But I got roundly mocked and told she wouldn’t be seen dead on public transport.

This was in the context of her admiring a new item I’d bought and I said oh funnily enough two separate ladies at the bus stop have also complimented it, she then shrieked with laughter and said there’s a weird contrast between having an expensive X and then getting public transport and that I probably look like a weirdo. That the only people who use buses outside of London are poor people who can’t afford to drive.

She’s bonkers, right? And a tad nasty? I’ve been stewing on this for a couple of days and shouldn’t let her rile me but ffs.

Yeh my sister said the same, she drives but wouldn’t be seen dead on the bus if anything happened to her car

ShakespearesBlister · 23/01/2023 21:06

Nothing goady to see here......

ShakespearesBlister · 23/01/2023 21:06

Have you seen the bus prices outside London?

EmpressaurusOfWitchesBackFromTheDead · 23/01/2023 21:07

Twits the lot of them. Public transport is way more environmentally friendly than cars.

R0ckets · 23/01/2023 21:07

Poor people can't afford the bus it's fucking extortionate!

Fleabigg · 23/01/2023 21:08

Yes, she’s a dickhead. Only selfish people drive when there are perfectly suitable and convenient alternatives which don’t take up as much road space or cause as much air pollution.

Cheeseandlobster · 23/01/2023 21:08

She is a nasty shallow bitch. Who the hell does she think she is?

Mum2jenny · 23/01/2023 21:08

Ignore the fucker, simple!!

Kendodd · 23/01/2023 21:09

Your relative has made me laugh out loud with her stupidity.
Does she have any other pearls of wisdom to regale us with?

ShakespearesBlister · 23/01/2023 21:09

Prices on the Essex busses are hardly for poor people. Poor people wouldn't be able to afford them, they are bloody extortionate. A taxi would be cheaper in some places.

I don’t know if you’re misunderstanding me?

We don’t live in London, if we did that would apparently be acceptable but as we don’t I should be ashamed of using public transport and should drive everywhere even if it’s less convenient and more expensive in case people think I’m poor.

None of the wealthy people I know ever take the bus. However, they also don’t mock others for doing so…

rwalker · 23/01/2023 21:09

In the 1950’s possibly earlier when car ownership wasn’t the norm

Exasperatednow · 23/01/2023 21:09

For the first time ever (rural) we have a reasonably priced bus - LA initiative. I have a car but I'm actively taking the bus when I can to make sure we keep it.

RandomMess · 23/01/2023 21:10

Before hybrid working I got the bus to work.

Subsidised bus pass, walk to the end of the road dropped off outside my office - nearer than any of the car parks.

Could have a drink at
Lunchtime or after work.

I live in a great bus route though and if it weren't for the subsidised bus pass it would ££££££££

doitwithlove · 23/01/2023 21:10

Your close relative is an idiot, firstly you are saving money which enables you to buy other items and it is more environmentally friendly having less vehicles on the road 🙄

Emmamoo89 · 23/01/2023 21:10

She sounds like an arse

takealettermsjones · 23/01/2023 21:10

She sounds insecure. Tell her you're not bothered if people think you're poor, because where's the shame in that?

Well, exactly!

Cheaper to drive where I am than take a bus, it shouldn't be like that though.

Greyhave · 23/01/2023 21:12

She sounds horrible when I worked in the city I used to bus into work because it was cheaper than buying a parking pass!

Most of my colleagues did too and we all had fairly nice cars at the time.

She sounds like a jealous weirdo!

ArcticSkewer · 23/01/2023 21:12

How many rich people do I know who get the bus?

Lots.

What do they all have in common?

They have a free over 60 bus pass.

WandaWonder · 23/01/2023 21:12

We get busses all the time as we choose not to have a car, haven't for years

It genuinely sounds crazy buy I like the freedom without a car, we hire one sometimes and sure somedays I feel I could do with one, then walk past a petrol station and see the price of pertrol lol!

People do think we are crazy but I prefer it

mast0650 · 23/01/2023 21:12

She is silly. Ignore her. Sensible people get the bus if it is convenient. Even quite rich people. I sometimes get the bus and see all sorts of people on there. Driving/parking in the city where I work is a nightmare.

Florenz · 23/01/2023 21:13

Using public transport is like flaunting your wealth nowadays, unless you are old enough to get it for free. Poorer people have to use cars.
