That is not a chocolate cake.

Looks great.

Tastes good for a supermarket cake.

Costs up to around £25

Thanks

I really like the Tesco red velvet cake - and it's only €3, here in Ireland. It's not huge, enough for 6 max, I think - but it's moist, and has a lovely flavour. Their white chocolate and strawberry is a close second - for the same price - a bargain! I add my own candles for birthdays etc., always goes down a treat :)

Costco is brilliant

Happygone · 23/01/2023 19:15

Not Waitrose. Dry as a bone. M&S are okay.

Timeandtune · 23/01/2023 19:19

M&S

gravyriceandchips · 23/01/2023 19:21

I just got an Asda one where they put the photo on. Was nice. Raspberry jam

Bigweekend · 23/01/2023 19:22

I prefer to put candles on an "ordinary" fancy supermarket cake. E.g lemon drizzle or red velvet cake. Or sometimes I get cup cakes or brownies and put candles on them.

You can get a lot of cake for £25 in a supermarket, if you don't buy a specific celebration cake.

StickofVeg · 23/01/2023 19:22

My first choice would be M&S, second choice Waitrose. My reason is that other supermarkets are far too sweet.

mynewname25 · 23/01/2023 19:23

The rainbow one from M&S, it was £15 and absolutely delicious 😋

BarbaraofSeville · 23/01/2023 19:26

Costco cakes are utterly revolting and the ingredients have to be seen to be believed.

The M&S rainbow cake looks good.

This one, they have them in shops too.

ReindeerBelieve · 23/01/2023 19:29

M&S every time -lots of non chic options

ClosedAuraOpenMind · 23/01/2023 19:29

DH got me a Fiona Cairns cake from Waitrose for my birthday last month, and no one really liked it, it was largely uneaten
SIL had a costco cake for her sons 21st last year and I thought it was vile, artificial and sweet
but M&S usually good

Davros · 23/01/2023 19:31

Costco cakes are vile. Cheap and cheerful, do the job for guests who can't discern.
Otherwise M&S

Tinytigertail · 23/01/2023 19:35

Costco cakes are big but not great quality and horribly over sweet. We love Waitrose Neopolitan cake.

geraniumthefourth · 23/01/2023 19:38

I hate cake, and I actually had a second slice of the M&S rainbow cake, so M&S for the win!

Costco cakes are so foul and artificial that even calling them cake should be against the trades description act.

Any basic madeira cake will do the job.

This times several million. It's a crime to call a blousy chemical concoction a cake.

londonrach · 23/01/2023 21:54

Marks and Spencer do the best cakes, Waitrose do the worse. Go to marks...they honestly the best!

londonrach · 23/01/2023 21:56

After marks being the best, Waitrose cakes being awful..Tesco, Sainsbury's and Morrisons are Kindy dry and in the middle...never been to Costco but suspect DD was given a piece of that creamy stuff at one party...one bite and it was binned.... Go to marks...they honestly the best....

Zanatdy · 23/01/2023 21:59

My fav supermarket cake is the Sainsbury’s sweetie one. Was under a fiver before cost of living crisis, now probably £6 or so!

Friendofdennis · 23/01/2023 22:04

Marks and Spencer cake and then put some of their pretty mini sponge cakes or similar around it to make it go further.

TheLette · 23/01/2023 23:04

Slightly above your budget at £30 but this cake is excellent, got the larger size for my daughter's birthday. Very tasty, light sponge and not too ridiculously sugary. Easy to decorate with a personalised cake topper or candles etc

Skiphopbump · 23/01/2023 23:07

Some Sainsbury’s sell patisserie Valerie cakes , would go for that if it’s an option.

Murdoch1949 · 24/01/2023 06:18

Waitrose.
