"My baby"

tocas · 22/01/2023 20:41

Genuinely not sure if I ABU or not. It makes me cringe when people call their children over the age of about 6 months "my baby". In my eyes they just don't necessarily seem like babies any more. I can sort of understand up until 12 months but definitely not after. I've come across people calling their child of nearly two year old "my baby".
Aibu?

YABU. My 10YO is still my baby

jamdonut · 23/01/2023 18:30

Poppingmad123 · 23/01/2023 18:26

Could be worse. Grown up couples calling each other baby or babe 🤢

I call my 65 year old partner Babe!🤭

Newusername3kidss · 23/01/2023 18:31

I have 3, youngest is 2 now. We call him the baby. Just easier so “I’ll take boys to school then the baby to nursery”.

walkinthewoodstoday · 23/01/2023 18:36

Well my son is 12 months and the nursery refers to him and others his age as babies

Topseyt123 · 23/01/2023 18:38

My "babies" are all in their twenties now! I still think of them as my babies, especially the youngest.

I don't go around publicly referring to them that way, but to me it's what they are.

MarvellousMonsters · 23/01/2023 18:39

I'm 54 and still my mums baby. YABU

Also, actual babies are still very much babies until they are at least 18-24 months old. A 6, or 7 month old is still very definitely a baby, and not even close to being a grown child.

Forgottenwhatsleepis · 23/01/2023 18:39

My DM was my DGD's baby until the day he died.
But you're not BU to having an opinion on it 💐

WhiteFire · 23/01/2023 18:42

I tell my 10 year old and 15 year old to stop annoying their 16 year old sister because she is just a baby. 😁

FromIndia · 23/01/2023 18:44

And my DM still refers to me at 'baby' as in "I'm going to the airport to pick up my baby and my grand children". I'm 45 and my DC are 14 and 11!

Shitsituation · 23/01/2023 18:49

Zola1 · 22/01/2023 20:44

Round here (area wise), the youngest child in a family is 'the baby'. So we will say, will you put the baby's bath on, will you watch the baby a minute.. she's 2.5.

Liverpool by any chance 😆

Bestcatmum · 22/01/2023 20:46

My DS will always be my baby. He's 40.

Exactly this and why not

GUARDIAN1 · 23/01/2023 18:55

Aquamarine1029 · 22/01/2023 20:45

You didn't even need to tell us, it's obvious.

This! The fact OP has no children - or babies even - stands out a mile.

What would you prefer, OP? "My infant"? If I had an 8 month old and referred to it as anything other than my baby, I'd expect others to find it very odd.

Dondigdu · 23/01/2023 18:55

YABU. My children are 6 and 8nand are still very much, my babies

Motelschmotel · 23/01/2023 18:55

Ha! I could tell from first post you don’t have any DC 😂

Bunchymcbunchface · 23/01/2023 18:57

My son is called xxxxxx my baby boy
in my phone. He’s 20 next month

Wasteofmoneyornot · 23/01/2023 18:58

I'm still trying to lose my last baby weight

Youngest is 24

MissWings · 23/01/2023 18:59

@Bunchymcbunchface

Slightly edging into nightmare MIL zone with that 😂😂

WeeOrcadian · 23/01/2023 19:01

I call my 6 and 8 year olds 'baby' as a term of endearment. But 'baby', not 'my baby'

YABU though. When you grow and then eject a human being from your body, you're allowed to call them whatever you damn well like

Janeyem · 23/01/2023 19:02

My 13 year old is my baby girl. I am my Dad’s wee pet lamb. I’m 53 😂

Lol if it helps in real life I call him a f*cking moron

Coconut212 · 23/01/2023 19:09

My 11 year old is still my baby, he’s not a baby. But over 6 months is still a baby as it’s not a toddler

Scumbling · 23/01/2023 19:13

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 22/01/2023 21:00

At 6 months they should be out there making a mark in the world, not lying about farting and gurgling and permitting their besotted parents to refer to them as 'my baby'.

Tut.

Quite right. They should be pulling themselves up by their little bootee straps!

laylababe5 · 23/01/2023 19:13

YABU. Logically this makes no sense. The next level up from baby is toddler i.e. they toddle or walk. Most babies don't start walking until at least a year old, often later. Mine started walking a little at 13 months but I didn't refer to her as a toddler for at least another few months because that would not be accurate. Even in my daughter's crèche the room she's in is referred to as "the baby room", and she won't move into "the toddler room" until she is 2 years old. My Mum calls my 40 year old sister her baby and she loves it. It's a term of endearment.

Sennelier1 · 23/01/2023 19:14

Yes @tocas , I most certainly pick up my baby from daycare, even if he's 3 😊 Or "my little one".

Pliudev · 23/01/2023 19:14

My baby is a ten year old Jack Russell.
