"My baby"

Genuinely not sure if I ABU or not. It makes me cringe when people call their children over the age of about 6 months "my baby". In my eyes they just don't necessarily seem like babies any more. I can sort of understand up until 12 months but definitely not after. I've come across people calling their child of nearly two year old "my baby".
Aibu?

Would you say to others in everyday conversation though? For example "I've got to go and pick my baby up from nursery"

Yes I would, at 14 months old she’s somewhere between baby and toddler atm, feels like a baby to me! I also call her ‘the baby’ a lot as well. You’d have nightmares over it.

Slowingdownagain · 23/01/2023 11:54

🙄

it's a term of endearment.

Also does a baby stop being a baby at 6months and 1 day.

YABU. And ridiculous.

Plumbear2 · 23/01/2023 11:54

You seem to have no awareness of what a 6 month old is like. Mine still couldn't sit unaided. They spent there time rolling around the room or in a baby chair. They where babbling but no words. They had just recently worked out that they where attached to their hands and where starting to delibrately grasp objects. They cried to ask for feeds, bum changes, cuddles etc. They weren't just babies they where still very young tiny babies. Understand now?

BumpySkull · 23/01/2023 11:56

My DD was 6mo yesterday. I have absolutely no idea what else she’d be if not a “baby”. OP, you’ve said you don’t have any children but have you actually met any children?

BumpySkull · 23/01/2023 11:58

This isn’t a “baby” according to OP 😂

PinkSyCo · 23/01/2023 11:59

So what is a baby once they hit the 6 months mark if not a baby? 😕

BumpySkull · 23/01/2023 12:02

This isn’t a “baby” according to OP 😂

They are your baby forever, no matter how big and hairy they become.

They are your baby forever, no matter how big and hairy they become.

Agreed.

noimaginationforausername · 23/01/2023 12:29

You're weird! My kids are 15 & 9 and are still my babies.. I don't go around calling them my babies but they always will be!

CustardySergeant · 23/01/2023 12:42

tocas · 23/01/2023 06:12

Oh now this I understand 😆

What? A 3 year old dog is a baby but a 7 month old human isn't?

SlouchingTowardsBethlehemAgain · 23/01/2023 12:54

My 31 year old DC is still my baby, as is my ugly old dog.

ScrambledEggForBrains · 23/01/2023 12:57

My Baby turned 23yrs old in Dec

StonwEd · 23/01/2023 12:59

25 yo dd and her 3yo dd, my babies
23 yo ds, my big baby
17 yo ds, my little one

MissWings · 23/01/2023 13:01

I have a 13, 11 and 7 year old. The 7 year old is my baby 😂.

To be fair I’m 34 and whilst not often my mum says the term she will sometimes say it to others in conversation. This one is my baby. It’s fine!

Newnamenewname109870 · 23/01/2023 13:05

My three year old is definitely still a baby to me. He will always be my baby! And compared to older children he really is.

piliomachaon · 23/01/2023 13:23

Out of curiosity OP. How old are you?

Highfivemum · 23/01/2023 13:28

All my 6 DC are my babies. None are under 6 months. I do have a friend who says her DC age in months and not years. So her nearly three year old is 33 months. Now I find that strange

xogossipgirlxo · 23/01/2023 13:31

Well, if you say "my baby" to your teenager, I don't care. But I have one colleague who says she has poorly baby at home and her son is almost 4. Surely he isn't baby anymore? Call him what you want, but why to other people? I thought she has few months old who is unwell (i.e. like on the picture above) 😂

spiderlight · 23/01/2023 13:35

My DS is 15 and eight inches taller than me. He is still, and always will be, my baby, and I still call him 'bach' (Welsh for 'small' or 'little one') about 50 times a day.

Forthelast · 23/01/2023 13:38

This seems like such a mean spirited thing to have an issue with and criticise. It's a cultural thing as well. We don't all have to speak the same way. I wonder what your problem is that it bothers you so much.

Untitledsquatboulder · 23/01/2023 13:45

I still call my youngest (going on 15) "my baby" on occasion. It annoys him immensely as he towers over me.

I do find it a bit odd when people on here say things like "at 4 they're still a baby really" rather than "4 is still really young" but whatever.

DarkShade · 23/01/2023 14:05

Well if they can't walk yet they're not toddlers, are they? I think baby up to when they start walking is fine, even 18 months old is normal age to be called 'baby'.

My newborn is four weeks, about time he grew up and I stopped calling him a baby, it’s very childish. Your babies are your babies forever, OP! Including my four year old. And including 42-year-old me to my parents.
