Did people speak in such a formal clipped way or is this just for effect?

Not all of then do. I think it is to show that the professionals were middle class and the area they serve were generally working class.

Timothy speaks in an American accent sometimes. Has anyone else noticed that?

ssd · 22/01/2023 20:34

I wonder if middle class people spoke like that then

There was far more clipped RP around. Go and listen to a BBC announcer from back then. As far as we have a societal accent, it has softened. Listen to the late Queen from the 60s and compare to her later years too. I know she's not middle class, but she is a good case study as there's so much material.

I thought he sounded a little bit Northern in this evening's episode and wondered why. Is he supposed to be at York or Leeds University?

AutumnCrow · 22/01/2023 21:28

Timothy has been listening to the Beach Boys playing on an LP at the university student union. Shelagh will be scandalised.

DiamondApricot · 22/01/2023 22:01
