apart from the fact that jodie whittaker is arguably The.Best.Docter.Ever. we will most likely not see a female dr in the next 20 years. if ever.

The JW Dr Who episodes have been the worst ones ever and I hated Peter Capaldi. A combination of bad scripts, poor storylines, too many companions who didn't gel and a good actress who made a terrible Dr Who. None of it worked and we ceased to care about the series at all. Unheard of in our house.

I really hope the next one is better. It needs to be.

JW's doctor was utterly shite!

I suspect this was down to the writing rather than her although the "fugitive" doctor, Ruth (Jo Martin) was brilliant.

RandomersAssociation · 24/01/2023 10:19

What d’you mean, @Picklypickles ?

GloomyDarkness · 24/01/2023 10:26

Peter Capaldi was a good actor hampered by poor scripts in the role - and still manged the occasional flashes or entire episodes of good work.

I thought at first Jodie Whittaker was a good actress but the story lines weak and then I saw some other actors Dr Ruth,Jo Martin, and the Master,Sacha Dhawan, do much more with very poor parts. I think she was wrong for the part or told to play it very wrong.

I've seen some who people on you tube analyses - some point out the companions were basics all doing the same job - the same part three times which does explain why they were so forgettable. Also they point to some interviews with Whittaker which suggest there was a whiff attitude to part similar to rings of power and Witcher suffer from.

The writing was dire though - I found the Mary Shelley episode frankly insulting reducing her to someone recounting events rather than someone who produce a unique book drawing on her life events and world around her. Then saw then saw Zheng Yi Sao episode and that was just bizarre and incomprehensible mess.

I'm hoping it come back not least as DH insists we all watch it together - but some of the super fans have concerns as apparently Russell T Davies has said he now plans to write issue into it - though I image he'd do it in a more subtle way I'm also wary as frankly bit fed up of being educated and preached when I just want to watch some inconsequential and fun TV.

fascinating how our views differ.

I couldn't get on with previous drs but jodie somehow did make me want to continue watching.

Jodie Whittaker is a brilliant actress but was a terrible doctor (due to the storylines). The whole series was hijacked though by the brilliant Sacha Dhawan as the master.

I don't actually care what sex the doctor is as long as the writing and stories are good.

GloomyDarkness · 24/01/2023 10:48

I think that's a thing at the minute with a lot of shows or adaptations they write/cast people that alienate the existing fan base who slowly stop watching and the new audience that like the changes is much smaller so ratings drop and the shows get re-booted or canceled.

I don't think the part being cast as a woman was the issue - it was more the way the female doctor was played and written - ditzy.

The Dr was always silly and fun curious but then turn into serious and/or menacing character often very quickly much more so with modern re-boot but always there - and she couldn't do that and when she tried I found it very unconvincing.

MermaidEyes · 24/01/2023 10:55

This in a nutshell. So many strong female companions and they make the first female Doctor some ditzy twit.

Tardis

Surprised it worked! Oldies might remember how...

What is Archers though?

Namechangedatheist · 24/01/2023 11:21

JW was completely shite at playing Doctor Who.
The writing of her episodes was dire.
The special effects were even more rubbish than usual.
The story lines were awful
The companions were played as self indulgent morons.
And FFS the moralising throughout the episodes...

I stopped watching it.

The biggest issue is that Doctor Who traditionally has had characters who you care about and who could evoke an emotional response in the viewer.

The JW era is characterised by terrible acting, bloody awful writing and a complete failure to understand that Doctor Who (female or male) should be a strong character, not some pointless simpering, whining, clueless idiot.

Brokendaughter · 24/01/2023 11:35

Stopped watching after Tennant disappeared & just couldn't find anything worth staying for with anyone since.

He was fantastic & ever since they've all just been sub par.

Don't know if it's the writing or the actors/actresses, but it went from being a must watch show to a don't-even-know-if-it's-on show.

Archers is the pub sign from The Archers

RandomersAssociation · 24/01/2023 11:41

It’s the sign for The Bull, @MudLady - the pub in the Radio 4 soap ‘The Archers’. MN granted us the emoji to celebrate a certain number of posts reached (don’t remember how many). I’ve posted on every one of the 140 odd threads - and have never had any occasion to use it.
