To not expect to find BEEF in my vegetarian chilli

Last night I opened a tin of chilli for dinner (I know, I know, just call me Nigella!), I cooked it, started tucking in when, what's this? I pulled out a forkfull of beef!beef I ask you! Not strictly a vegetable... Not what I expected, nor what I wanted as I'm a vegetarian and it said clearly on the label 'suitable for vegetarians' and indeed, for vegans. Not in my book.
AIBU to expect my vegetarian dinner to be beef-free?

I agree about approaching the vegetarian society about it. I would guess that the company can count on a portion of its sales thanks to that tick. The threat of having it removed could be an incentive to do something?

Like others I am shocked and horrifed that they have not withdrawn at the very least. Even if it was a meat dish the fact that the meat cannot be identified as being one of the 4 major meats would have me vey concerned!

Any news???

kayzr · 19/01/2009 16:17

OMG!!

I just saw this in 'Active Conversations" and thought it had happened again as I posted on it when you first posted. I can not believe this is still ongoing!

Katiekitty · 19/01/2009 16:59

Yep, it's still rumbling on!

I heard today that Tulip, the distributors for Stagg Vegetarian Chilli are closing their Norfolk processing plant. Sadly with job losses.

I'm in the process of contacting the FSA about it, will see waht they make of it all soon I hope. It's a slow burner this one, much like the products of their food!

Let us know the updates. This is awful.

DDraigoch33 · 30/01/2009 13:51

Laughing more than i should at 'foreign body'

Is anyone else thinking what i'm thinking?

cheesesarnie · 30/01/2009 13:52

ewww.luckily never heard of stagg.but ewww.

MmeLindt · 30/01/2009 14:19

I opened this thead, looked at the date and though that someone had resurrected an old thread by mistake.

I cannot believe that it took them so long to test the products.

Not much consumer protection if it takes them a YEAR to identify and then the company will still not recall it.

Hope you get a result soon.

almeida · 30/01/2009 23:22

It's disguisting that the product hasn't been recalled. It's against some religions to eat certain meat. imho This company cannot be serious about customer relations at all.

Have they offered compensation to you Kitty? It must have been an awful experience.

Lovesdogsandcats · 22/10/2009 13:41

Is the OP still around, if so what happened, was it meat or not!

notapizzaeater · 01/07/2010 20:40

Just found this at the bottom of my watched list - did anyone ever find out what happened ?

gtamom · 02/07/2010 09:14

Omgosh. I have bought that Stagg Vegetable Garden Chili for ds's vegetarian gf a few times. Never again, and will be sure and tell people what happened with you. I guess it is best I do not mention it to her. Shudder.
Good luck with this.

Katiekitty · 02/07/2010 22:16

Hello - yes, I'm still around!

Well there was no product recall, the company offered me £50 compensation, which I told them to keep and get stuffed, quite frankly.

I tell everyone I know about this incident and how their 'unidentifiable meat' ended up in a tin for vegetarians.

Oooh, it's getting me all riled up again, thinking about it!

OP posts:
Needanewname · 02/07/2010 22:30

I can't belive nothing else happened about this, did you try and get themedia involved?

Jackstini · 02/07/2010 22:30

I would be riled up too!
Are you still going to sue them Katie? Surely a solicitor would take something clear cut like this on a no-win, no-fee basis.

Katiekitty · 02/07/2010 22:39

I'm not sure I've left it too long?

A bit of RL got in the way in the meantime, so perhaps too much time has passed? The investigations themselves took aaaages.

Still angry about it though

Should I take it up again?

OP posts:
Bousy · 02/07/2010 22:40

Yes! For entertainment if for nothing else . Don't see why they should be allowed to get away with it.

Katiekitty · 02/07/2010 22:45

he he at entertainment!

I might just do that, you know.

Would be embarrasing to appear in the DM though

Yuck, I have a tin of Stagg veg cgilli in the cupboard. What was the batch number?

bluecardi · 02/07/2010 23:05

This is shocking - meat, that couldn't be identified (super yuck),in a veggie product. Only £50 compensation offered by Stagg - definately should be in the papers.

bluecardi · 02/07/2010 23:06

yes - do you have the batch number?

Katiekitty · 02/07/2010 23:06

I'll get back to on that SKSS - it would have been out of date a while ago, so yours is maybe ok.

Emphasis on the 'maybe'...

OP posts:
Katiekitty · 02/07/2010 23:07

Well, I've kept all the paperwork, it's on my work pc, so I'll dig it out and get my fighting boots on methinks...

Don't buy Stagg!

OP posts:
bluecardi · 02/07/2010 23:09

Good luck !

KnickKnack · 02/07/2010 23:13
