To not expect to find BEEF in my vegetarian chilli

Katiekitty · 06/02/2008 08:57

Last night I opened a tin of chilli for dinner (I know, I know, just call me Nigella!), I cooked it, started tucking in when, what's this? I pulled out a forkfull of beef!beef I ask you! Not strictly a vegetable... Not what I expected, nor what I wanted as I'm a vegetarian and it said clearly on the label 'suitable for vegetarians' and indeed, for vegans. Not in my book.
AIBU to expect my vegetarian dinner to be beef-free?

fab. do keep us informed.

mistlethrush · 07/02/2008 10:47

I once did a job for a frozen pea packing plant (not packing - to do with the buildings and neighbouring development) - that also did other things in season eg runner beans - apparently the runner beans section was the worst for finding wildlife in amongst the vegetation that had been harvested. Have only bought frozen peas and no other frozen veg since!

Still waiting for Environmental Health to get back to me about collecting the evidence...hmm, I'm going to have to chase them methinks. Before the blumming thing goes off in my fridge...In the meantime, I'm telling everyone I know about this!

how awful kitty - any update

Indith · 14/02/2008 20:35

I once found a live (and very fat) earwig in a jar of dolmio!

I have also worked in a factory, packing frozen fish (oh the joys of post A-level, pre-travel money making). What goes on in factories is very scary, I have to try to block it from my mind anytime I buy anything that has seen a factory.

Indith · 14/02/2008 20:45

Oh come on! An earwig people! Don't tell me I killed the thread with an earwig!

Anyway I want to know if people in white coats and safety goggles are going to come and pick up the specimin. I'm having visions of decontamination chambers.

Katiekitty · 22/02/2008 13:56

omg... no, hang on, this needs capital OMG!!!!
The Co-op customer service team (and I use the term very loosely) have just called me and shouted at me on the phone!!!!

They wrote to me and said they were launching a "thorough investigation" into the incident - all this without even asking me where or when I bought the stuff, mind, and they sent me a £5 gift voucher as good will.
I wrote back, returning the voucher as a mark of my disgust at their lack of any sort of effective care and they have just called me now and said in raised tones that there is simply nothing more they can do!!!!

The woman said she couldn't for the life of her work out why the suppliers hadn't been in touch with me and they were stumped as to why nothing had been done... er, maybe because YOU, my lady, have given them nothing to go on???

I had to tell her not to SHOUT at me!!!!
I am absolutely flabbergasted at them all!

Environmental Health have got the offending thing, they collected it and are going to come back to me with findings. They asked loads of questions and were remarkably nice!

OMG OMG OMG, I need to calm down...

i once found a blue bottle in a tin of baked beans! bleurghhh!!!!!!

IndigoMoon · 22/02/2008 14:00

that sounds terrilbe with the co-op

Buckets · 22/02/2008 14:00

So it might have been a bit of rat, rather than cow then. Which is worse I wonder?

Katiekitty · 22/02/2008 14:15

I can't believe she shouted at me saying: "I don't know what else we can do, then"!!!! Erm, you can do your job, which is supposed to be 'customer service'. She never one apologised to me in that phone call for the unpleasant meat-based incident, she just called up for a shouting match! A one-way shouting match, as I did stay calm, somehow...
Totally unbelievable!
What a cow!!! (her, not the bit of meat...)

Hello cups, it's funny you should ask as just the other day I got a call from Environmental Health saying the test results are due any day now, so I'll keep you posted!
Whether it be beef, mouse, technician's finger, or something else, I am bracing myself!
To be continued....

wonder what it'll be!!!!

chamaeleon · 23/04/2008 14:19

please make sure you post when you know, i didnt see this when you first found it but am gripped now!

cyteen · 23/04/2008 14:27

Bleurgh. I am also queasily gripped. Had a similar although thankfully less ambiguous experience in a Wetherspoons once - ordered their five bean chilli, got halfway through before noticing it was the meat version. In my defence, I was waiting for my brother to come out of surgery and wasn't really paying any attention to general life surroundings.

My other half got a 6 inch carpentry nail in his curry once in a curry house on Brick Lane.

Friendlypizzaeater · 23/04/2008 14:27

I once had a deep fried moth in a plate of deep fried clams - I was with customers at the time and started gipping !

I got a free meal and an apology ...

Did Tulip never come back to you ?

Katiekitty · 23/04/2008 16:03

I will let you all know as soon as I hear anything! I am hoping it is something harmless, it was definitely meat, no doubt about it. Although I'm veggie, I know what meat looks like. It was a chunk of something, my guess is beef as it was all fibrous and stringy, not like chicken and it definitely wasn't a mince piece, it was a bona fide chunk. Bleurgh!

It's amazing how many of you have unexpected food finds out there!

A man at Tulip did come back to me in the end, he was very keen to get his hands on the offending tin and its contents and when I said it was all with Environmental Health, he was a little perturbed.

Watch this space for further updates!

was thinking about this as I made dinner!!

Spidermama · 24/06/2008 11:21

Are you sure it was beef? The textured soya mince stuff looks and feels exactly like beef.

cupsoftea · 24/06/2008 11:23

spider - what about the stringy bit - yuck!!

madhairday · 24/06/2008 11:30

I once ordered leek and potato soup and found chuncks of fish (bleurggh) (am veggie) Was in v posh hotel and got the meal free but couldn't quite work up appetite for the rest.

Any updates kitty?
