To not expect to find BEEF in my vegetarian chilli

Last night I opened a tin of chilli for dinner (I know, I know, just call me Nigella!), I cooked it, started tucking in when, what's this? I pulled out a forkfull of beef!beef I ask you! Not strictly a vegetable... Not what I expected, nor what I wanted as I'm a vegetarian and it said clearly on the label 'suitable for vegetarians' and indeed, for vegans. Not in my book.
AIBU to expect my vegetarian dinner to be beef-free?

Lovesdogsandcats · 24/06/2008 12:40

Just read this now and ew I am veggie.

Whats the update with the health people?

And Indith please tell us your factory stories!!

Katiekitty · 24/06/2008 13:05

Hello! Still no news on this, I'm afraid!
When I saw the thread had been revived, it reminded me I still haven't heard anything from Environmental Health, so I actually just called them a minute ago and they said the mystery chunk was still with Trading Standards, so I still have to sit and wait to find out what it is/was - so annoying when you're as impatient as me!

Have avoided tinned chilli ever since though, so at least something good has come out of the whole unpleasant matter.

It was def not soya mince stuff as there isn't any of that in the factory and it isn't in the ingredients..

so cue Eastenders-style booming drums: dum, dum, du-du-dudududuhhhhhh - we shall have to wait and see! I'll keep you posted as soon as I hear anything!

cupsoftea · 24/06/2008 21:28

wonder when they'll let you know what the bit was/is!!!

Katiekitty · 02/07/2008 10:13

No proper news yet - but I got a note from Environmental Health saying sorry for the delay, the chunk is still at the lab, but I should get the results from them by the end of this week... this will be the first place I come to to tell all!

It's still 'ongoing' and test results are still awaited!!!!! I chased them up about it last week and they are pressing for a final result. When they have it, they say they'll forward me a copy of the entire report, which I really can't wait to see.
I'll report back as soon as I can, thank you all for hanging on in there!

SugaryBits · 18/10/2008 20:02

Any news yet?

Lovesdogsandcats · 18/10/2008 21:34

bloody hell, this is taking forever!
I reckon its meat, and they know it.

Katiekitty · 20/10/2008 09:22

Still nothing definite! It's all tests, tests, tests... does anyone have any advice about what I should do if it is meat? I want to take them to the cleaners if it is... what would you do?

OP posts:
Lovesdogsandcats · 20/10/2008 15:06

I am vegetarian and have not eaten meat for over 20 years, and I can tell you that if this is meat, they would not want to be dealing with me.

You need to threaten them with going public as if it is meat, it is absolutely outrageous.

I would want to be knowing how the hell meat got in there in the first place?I would want assuring thet it can NEVER happen again.

And lastly, I would want a massive amount of compensation as Stagg chilli is the only main brand tha do a meat and a veggie one, not good for their public relations to be outed on something as simple as keeping the bloody meat out of a vegetarian chilli!

Lovesdogsandcats · 20/10/2008 15:08

oh and can i just say that your 'fibrous and stringy' description was barf inducing!

KnickKnackNaNollaig · 22/12/2008 21:35

Dont know how I stumbled across this thread...but now I'm curious, did you ever get an answer?? or an apology etc?

Katiekitty · 23/12/2008 12:13

Sorry to be absent on this thread for so long, I've had news to spill but at the moment it is with my lawyers...
As soon as I can talk about it, I will fill you all in!

This is all absolutely fascinating! As a long-term veggie who now works in public health (have spend my training day with the env. health chappies too!) I am on the edge of my seat. Keep updating, KK [fbelugh emoticon]

Katiekitty · 23/12/2008 12:31

Wow, CaptainKarvol - I bet you've encountered some sights along your way!

spookycharlotte121 · 23/12/2008 12:33

Oooh how intriguing. It is terrible though. I will warn my gran. She often buys veggi ooptions for my grandad as he is highly allergic to pork and if he were to eat it it could have serious consiquences. Its good job that someone who wasnt allergic to the offending object didnt get it. Tell us asap when your alowed to...... I really wanna know what it was.

CaptainKarvol · 23/12/2008 12:34

nah, I just peered round the door of Env. Health, heard all their stories (bleugh) and went on a couple of days worth of 'rounds'. Gave me a new perspective on what you're paying for with some pub food though .

I'm more your policy/strategy type, or will be if I ever get my head around it! No rats in the chilli in my working day!

randomxmas · 27/12/2008 15:05

Just picked this thread at random! What a thread it is - waiting for the updates?

Also what if the meat is against someones religion - there should be recall.

Lovesdogsandcats · 27/12/2008 23:04

omg I cannot wait to find out, and from what you say katie, it sounds like it was meat!!
Hurry back with news!!
