What are people spending on energy bills a month I am really just looking for perspective

I refuse to pay the highly inflated energy costs we have in the UK. I have put my CH on maybe five times this winter, when I've had overnight guests. I'm in a newish 4 bed detached house and genuinely have not been cold, I just layer up. But I don't have children to keep warm. I am elderly but reckon until I hit my 80s, I can do without radiators on. Consequently I'm paying £60 pm for both gas/electric. We are taken for mugs in the UK regarding energy costs, they're the highest in Europe.

Outtasteamandluck · 22/01/2023 09:24

I paid £260 in December. But usage was £383.

Also not Uk. Central Europe.
We pay €580 per month for our average use . That’s direct debit for electric and district heating. We probably use more like €1000 in winter and €100 in summer. In June we either pay the extra or get a rebate if we used less over the year.

Our price hasn’t changed at all. Only oil had increased but we have moved off of it, and Electricity has increased but only for new customers. Most people have ‘lifetime’ fixed rates if they stay at same property. So we moved to this house in 2016 and it’s the same price as then. Gas is only available in the main city. People heat via oil, wood burners, solar, photovoltaic, heat pumps, district heating or a mixture.

So heating and electric has always been more expensive here. We generally pay low per kw, but have high standing charges. I think our electric is around €40 a month in standing charges and district heating is about €60. So we would have €100 min per month even if we didn’t turn anything on. It’s also minus temperatures for about 4-5 months a year, so you can’t really not have heating

Are you in Latvia?

My boyfriend's from there and talks of this communal heating using woodchips where everyone pays based on property size rather than usage.

I’m on a fix til Nov 2023. December bill was £270.00 if I was on the price cap it would have been £560.00. I pay £250.00 DD and have £300.00 in credit. I will be putting away £250.00 extra from April to cover any increase after my fix ends. Hopefully I will build up a credit over summer too. I only fixed to get the £60.00 of nectar points promotion and I advised everyone I knew about the deal but because the standing charge at the time was a bit higher than most even when I explained the £60.00 of nectar points offset this nobody listened to me and said it wasn’t a good deal. I’m glad I went ahead and did it now!

The minimum recommended temperature to avoid condensation, mould and lung problems is 18°C. I think you're being foolish if you can afford to heat your home, but decide not to. How much will repairs cost if/when you get mould/rot?

With regards to UK energy costs, the FT explains it here:

It looks like the main issues are 'the dash for gas', climate change targets and supporting vulnerable people on low incomes.

If you consider that 'being taken for mugs', fair enough.

I'm on a prepayment meter. The 60 odd quid from the government is pretty much covering my electric for the month but my gas is ridiculous. November to December, I topped up about £160. Previously that would have got me about two and a half months worth. It's appalling.

bellabasset · 22/01/2023 10:02

I've just had a dual energy bill from BG - on their *new accounting system - for £531 for the quarter ended 17th January. My dd of £88 remains as set back in April but was due to be revised in Oct. The estimated cost of my annual bill.is c £1,750. I have an early 18thC mid terraced cottage with 2' thick walls, dg in the SW, live on my own and the temp is 15°.without heating and I'm in my late 70's. I have a condensing boiler

BG has this ridiculous situation that a week after you pay your dd they put the govt help amount on your account and then pay it to you. So I have to transfer it back.

*I understand it's still being updated but I complained to my MP and will be updating him on the flaws on this system which is still being developed.

Shitfather · 22/01/2023 10:20

Single mum, London flat, work from office, OCD about switches and lights, 2 showers a day, haven’t switched on heating (thank you Primark for your fleece layers) - 50 quid/month Oct-Jan after govt subsidy.

cantba · 22/01/2023 12:15

stopringingme · 22/01/2023 12:34

Meant to add the money from the government is not included in that as EDF transfer that immediately back to our bank account.

😱 I hope you live in a mansion.

TheGuv1982 · 22/01/2023 13:21

£245 for our 4 bed. £60 of that is was charging the car.

ConsuelaHammock · 22/01/2023 19:12

Electricity is approx 300 ish every quarter and that’s with solar panels .

Oil - usually around 1000litres over winter. Will cost around £2k.

Coal is £27 a bag/40kg ( last year it was £12 a bag) and we use approximately 1 a week depending on who’s at home during the day .

Gas for hob is approx 4x £30 a year ( bottled gas)

We use a lot of logs which we cut from our own land. This saves us money but is time consuming.
We haven’t added it all up but it’s a lot. That’s with the central heating on for an hour inthe morning and a couple of hours in the evenings. The booster is used whenever the house starts to feel cold. Bedrooms are always a bit chilly but the living room is always toasty warm so we tend to congregate there every evening. We have a back boiler which heats the water and airs a few radiators downstairs.

ThisGirlNever · 22/01/2023 20:12

@ConsuelaHammock why are you paying £2 a litre for heating oil?

ConsuelaHammock · 23/01/2023 01:14

I meant 2000 litres . My mistake !

ConsuelaHammock · 23/01/2023 01:15

But for the year!

Season0fTheWitch · 23/01/2023 01:39

The one bed, ground floor flat we rent out: £67 for December

Our 6 bed house: nearly £500 for December

cantba · 24/01/2023 15:57

@blueshoes, not really. Its a big house but not massive. 6 bedrooms. No hot tubs or gyms or anything like that. We have just had it extended and it feels quite cold now (deapite ££££ on insulation) whereas it used to warm up fast.

Backtoreality1 · 24/01/2023 15:59

About £80 but I am still on a fixed rate until October

troppibambini6 · 24/01/2023 16:10

Gas and electricity combined is £800 a month.

Holy fuck. How? Do you live in a mansion?

JadeSeahorse · 24/01/2023 17:28

4 bed detached.

We pay £217 per month plus Government top up. (Octopus SVR) Just the two of us now but both retired.

Dual fuel. November bill was £256 total/December £388. Only use tumble dryer now for finishing off - use airing cupboard/dehumidifier instead. Have switched to using air fryers/Ninja 15 in 1/ microwave wherever possible instead of dual fuel range. Just bought a new washing machine which is more energy efficient and has 1600 spin. Swapped electric this month to one rate from eco 7.

Only one third of bill is electricity/two thirds gas. CH - recently serviced and power flushed - on 24 hrs a day but only 11-14 but we do use a gas fire on a very low setting in the living room for around 10 hours per day. I'm expecting January bill to be around £450.

Using quite a bit less on both than same time last year but bill well over double. ☹️

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 24/01/2023 17:29

This last bill that was part December and part January was £680
