Bridge over troubled water - played at my dads funeral. Actually can’t listen to many of their songs as it reminds me of both of my dead parents😢

This was on the radio one morning on my very normal drive to work. I came over incredibly emotional for absolutely no reason whatsoever.

Later that day found out my MIL had passed away unexpectedly. Am convinced it coincided with her time of death.

'Dry Your Eyes, Mate' by The Streets. It paints such a clear picture of the emotions of losing someone, for me, at least.

Yes this!

Also adding Zombie - The Cranberries and I’d Rather Go Blind - Beyonce version

Bridge over Troubled Water
My dad used to sing it to me when I was a child, always said that the second verse made him think of me "sail on silver girl". He died far too young. Even after all these years, even when I sing it with choir, my voice breaks on that line.
More up to date Visiting Hours, Ed Sheeran. Me and dh were lying in bed on Sunday morning just imagining having a Sunday lunch with our parents, and what we would give for just one more of those days. Later we were in car when it came on. Literally had to pull the car over!

Jeez just listened to that &
it’s so true to life. Lost my mum before having my oldest DD & being a mum without a mum is the hardest thing i’ve had to do & would give anything to have her “advice”

doadeer · 21/01/2023 21:35

The "I wasn't expecting that" song.

When he says

And when the nurses they came, said, "It's come back again"
I wasn't expecting that
Then you closed your eyes, you took my heart by surprise
I wasn't expecting that

Oh my goodness, my eyes are tearing up just writing this. I love my husband so much it just really gets me.

Jourdain11 · 21/01/2023 21:37

Oh noooooo, I can't think of the artist or the title! But it starts, "I'm not a perfect person..." and the refrain goes, "I found a reason for me.... to change who I used to be...."

Vincent - Don McLean

Across the stars - John Williams (it was the theme from attack of the clones, dreadful film but I think it's the best thing John Williams has in his mind bogglingly amazing catalogue. It's incredibly moving.

Odd one but the music box version of Despacito - I used to rock my daughter to sleep to it when she was a tiny baby, it brings back memories of her being all fresh smelling and sleepy from a bath, tiny yawns and new baby snuggles.

I'll also second , And So It Goes by Billy Joel that someone mentioned up thread

Ohh I love this score so much! It's my favourite. They played it at a concert at the Royal Albert Hall it made me cry. It's so beautiful

ShrimpingViolet · 21/01/2023 21:39

Scattered Black And Whites - Elbow
Just so evocative and emotional and it reminds me of why it's so important to still talk about those we've lost.

"He talks of people 10 years gone like I've known them all my life, my scattered black and whites" 😭

Two Little Boys - yes, I know all about Rolf Harris, but the lyrics get me every time.

My mum and nan sang this to us as very young children, then my mum sang it to my boys when they were kittle, DS was still really young when everything happened but used to still ask for it 🙈 the lyrics are very emotional.

MrsHughesPinny · 21/01/2023 21:39

Another vote for Pearl Jam’s ‘Black’ here. Especially the despair in that last part “I know some day you’ll have a beautiful life…” part is so raw and full of anguish. He’s a genius. Also, their song ‘Just Breathe’ gets me in the feels but that feels totally different.

Saddest lick ever goes to ‘Slow Dancing in a Burning Room’ by John Mayer. Kicks me in the gut every time I hear it.

@Jourdain11 That’s ‘The Reason’ by Hoobastank. Brilliant. I love that band.

PugInTheHouse · 21/01/2023 21:41

There has been lots of times where a song has made me cry, especially watching someone sing live, sometimes it's just an incredible performance or just something that gets to you, I cried several times watching Adam Lambert and Queen live, not necessarily in just the slow, emotional songs but when it was just so amazing!

PugInTheHouse · 21/01/2023 21:41

My son is a singer and there are certain songs that bring a tear to my eye when he performs them.

I had heard this song in passing and not really heard the lyrics, one day it came on the radio when I was on my own and I listened to it properly and just sobbed.

Before the next teardrop falls, Freddy Fender.
When my DD moved in with her unsuitable BF it summed up everything I wanted to say to her.

Thank you! It's such a beautiful and sad song - but I haven't heard it in ages. Now I can listen and probably cry!

I don’t want to talk about it by Rod Stewart
Different corner by George Michael haunted me through my divorce
Slipping through my fingers by Abba
Away in a manger sung by young children always reduces me to tears
