School uniform

I find that skirt as an option for a school uniform is both discriminatory and also inappropriate for winter.

I appreciate that teenagers (girls) want to show off and wear very short skirts but if trousers was the only option then firstly they would be warmer and secondly girls wont be discriminated/different to boys.

AIBR or AINBR ?

Dd has the option of skirts or trousers.

She prefers the skirt as we can get ones that fit her properly. Whereas the trousers are way too baggy around the waist to accommodate the required leg length. (The only trousers she wears us leggings)

DuplicateUserName · 20/01/2023 22:29

I'm sure they're better placed than you to decide how warm their legs are.

Nimbostratus100 · 20/01/2023 22:31

It is highly discriminatory not to have the option of a skirt for girls, as many girls wont manage heavy periods in trousers, and so will be unable to attend school on several days a month.

I get the absolute rage at people trying to withdraw the option of a skirt from girls

If it upsets you so much that girls have the extra option, by all means make skirts an option for boys too, who cares?

DamnThatHitsHome · 20/01/2023 22:32

Agreed- I find the whole rolling up skirts to show as much leg and bum really sad. Not because women should police what we wear- I will defend the right of women to wear what they like to the ends of the earth- but because children and teenagers shouldn’t be placing their self worth in sexiness, which is what it boils down to.

They all wear jeans, joggers etc at home so trousers shouldn’t be a problem- there can be as many different cuts of trousers as there are skirts.

Sucessinthenewyear · 20/01/2023 22:33

How is an option discrimination?

Many schools do have trousers as the only option and the girls happily manage

Fairislefandango · 20/01/2023 22:36

Confused How are they being discriminated against if they are given the choice to wear either trousers or a skirt?

HauntedPencil · 20/01/2023 22:36

Giving an option isn't discriminatory.

PeekAtYou · 20/01/2023 22:36

My dd preferred skirts because they fit her too.

She's at uni but it's only quite recent that trousers came in different fits, lengths and widths. Technically her school banned skinny fit but my son who is very skinny could get away with super skinny because he didn't have hips like females.

How trousers fit is really important for teens as they become more fashion conscious and can't get away with adjustable waists and flashing underwear because of gaping in trousers designed for a generic body type.

many girls do manage, not all, depending on heaviness of the bleeding. I know gilrs who have left such schools, girls who have not applied because of the policy, and girls who miss school regularly because of the policy

It is utterly evil to limit girls choices and education like this. It gives me the absolute rage. And the worst of it is, I've seen it upheld by women! largely women on the pill, I suspect.

PeachCottonTree · 20/01/2023 22:39

I wear skirts more in the winter than summer. Thick tights and a skirt are warmer than trousers and socks. Tights also dry faster when they get wet in the rain/snow than trousers do. Skirts not being warm enough isn’t a good argument why they shouldn’t be part of a school uniform.

thinkponk48 · 20/01/2023 22:40

I live right next to a high school that allows trousers or skirts. Also every girl is In skin tight trousers that look so uncomfortable

What?

It’s the very first time in my life that someone tells me that girls only manage period when they wear skirts.

Imagine a woman that has to wear trousers at her work because for example she works at a construction site. Shouldn’t she go to work a week each month?

And surely tights are not warm enough and appropriate for cold when it’s 0deg outside

At the moment it’s a pain when girls roll up their skirts, big a few years ago it was boys wearing their trousers below their pants that was a real problem.

dementedpixie · 20/01/2023 22:41

My dd prefers skirts and only wears them now at age 19. Why should she have been forced to wear trousers?

hedwigismyowl · 20/01/2023 22:44

With the exception on pj bottoms, I always wear skirts/ dress. I can testify that skirt and tights are warmer in the 0 degree weather than trousers.

I can wear either to work but much prefer skirts/ dresses. My skirts are knee length and I hate both short, midi and long skirts.

They are given the choice but if 10 girls out of 12 wear skirt then the rest 2 would feel weird if they come in trousers.

Skirts is all about showing off these days. It’s not appropriate in the cold and it doesn’t promote equality.

If boys can manage in trousers , then surely girls can too.

I don’t remember a day in my life that I was on my period and I told to myself “it’s a skirt day today at work because you are on your period” !

P0mbears · 20/01/2023 22:45

I don't understand how this has anything to do with periods?

Why is it easier to manage a heavy period when wearing a skirt?

HarrietSchulenberg · 20/01/2023 22:45

If the option is skirt or trousers it's not discriminatory, is it? What would you like to see as uniform instead?

DuplicateUserName · 20/01/2023 22:48

Again, who are you to decide how warm/cold other people's legs are? If they're cold they can wear trousers.

I agree about the trousers thing/periods. That's a bit weird.

Equality would be better promoted if both genders had access to the same clothing.

Thats all!

Plus an understanding of weather necessities. For example I go to work in my long socks, trousers, turtleneck jumper, duvet coat, scarf, hat, gloves. My kid should be that much warm too.

dementedpixie · 20/01/2023 22:50

My ds (16) wore shorts throughout primary school and we live in Scotland! He still wears shorts outwith school regardless of the outisde temperature. Who are you to decide what clothing is suitable at low temperatures?

BelleMarionette · 20/01/2023 22:51

It's a choice: girls can wear what they prefer. Boys can wear skirts too for all I care.

For some girls, wearing skirts, rather than trousers, is a religious obligation. Many prefer skirts.

Charlescav · 20/01/2023 22:52

Sometimes I see kids go to school in jackets i.e. suit jackets.

Its crazy! Surely they need a waterproof thick coat?

Thats another topic but similarly very close to the skirts one…

Your idea of equality is to wear trousers which would be traditionally worn by males. You can be just as warm in a skirt and tights
