School uniform

I find that skirt as an option for a school uniform is both discriminatory and also inappropriate for winter.

I appreciate that teenagers (girls) want to show off and wear very short skirts but if trousers was the only option then firstly they would be warmer and secondly girls wont be discriminated/different to boys.

AIBR or AINBR ?

Wtf??

Hoppinggreen · 21/01/2023 09:19

I get slightly creepy vibes from this post

PaperMonster · 21/01/2023 09:24

My child really struggles with secondary school uniform. She’d not be going to school at all if she had to wear trousers.

HostaFireandIce · 21/01/2023 09:26

I don't think I actually want an explanation, but I am also mystified by the poster insisting that heavy periods can only be managed in a skirt. I used to have very heavy periods and would always, out of preference, wear trousers at the time.

Hoppinggreen · 21/01/2023 09:42

School girls showing off in short skirts and heavy periods.
Seriously, am I the only one uncomfortable with this?

OoooohMatron · 21/01/2023 09:45

The key word there is Option. So YABU. If they had to wear a skirt I could see your issue.

fancyfrogs · 21/01/2023 09:45

Sometimes I've found thick tights to be warmer than trousers, depending on material 🤷🏼‍♀️

Witchcraftandhokum · 21/01/2023 09:48

I work in a school and wish trousers were the only option.

Then can I ask u do us all a favour.

Make them black trousers because grey is impossible. And allow the skinny style as most the senior girl options are skinny. If there's the option of no duck sides, and diaper butt more girls might take it up!

Doyoumind · 21/01/2023 10:01

I would have hated to wear trousers because the kind of trousers required as part of a uniform have never suited my shape and i would have been extremely self conscious and uncomfortable in them as a teen. Let girls decide.

MoscowMules · 21/01/2023 10:24

I worke skirts all through my education.

Knee length pencil type skirt or a knee length a line skirt.

In winter I wore thick tights in summer I wore thin tights.

I was never cold 🤷🏻‍♀️ I was also a professional figure skater so skirts and the cold were kinda the norm for me 🤣

Tights dry faster also if they get wet, so you don't have that damp feeling next to your calfs for long which was a bonus!

MoscowMules · 21/01/2023 10:28

Everydayimhuffling · 21/01/2023 08:11

@Nimbostratus100 It's not that I can't imagine a heavy period, it's that I don't understand how tights are easier than trousers. How do tights improve things?

The only thing I can think of, is I used to carry a spare pare of tights and knickers in a tiny "make up" bag in my school bag just incase.

I only once had to swap to the emergency tights as I caught the ones I was wearing on a fence when sitting on it and ripped the tights. I had a big hole on my arse cheeks 🤣, so I went and changed into a pair that didn't have a hole in them.

kiwiandcherries · 21/01/2023 10:38

@WhiteFire I totally agree. Was just responding to the OP feeling so strongly that girls should not wear skirts but then also claiming that children should do as they are told.

Thesonglastslonger · 21/01/2023 10:39

YABVU.

Of course girls should have the option of trousers or skirt. But trousers should never be compulsory for girls because girls get thrush/ utis and when that’s happening girls need as much fresh air floating around there as possible.

Topseyt123 · 21/01/2023 12:30

I'd have loved to have the option of wearing trousers at school but sadly, girls were only allowed skirts (or in summer term also the summer dress). That was secondary school from 1977 - 1984.

I think all clothing options should be available to both girls and boys. Both should have the option of trousers/shorts and/or skirts if preferred.

There are some very nice tailored shorts around that I would think wouldn't look out of place in a school uniform.

The alternative is to banish school uniform completely.

LockInAtTheFeathers · 21/01/2023 20:45

I think everyone should have the option of skirt, trousers or shorts. I do see @Nimbostratus100's point about skirts and tights being better for heavy periods- I had horrendous periods as a teen and felt more comfortable in a skirt as tights gave me an extra layer of protection for leakage and I felt that a thick pad was less visible than simply through trousers. I also struggled to get school trousers to fit me properly, which was less of an issue with skirts.

The school my kids go to just have a uniform list. Not one for boys and one for girls. Just, here's a list of suitable clothes, take your pick!

BeautifulWar · 21/01/2023 20:53

As long as skirts are an option and not enforced, there is no problem.

I detest most trousers - and not because I'm showing off, but because I find it difficult to find a pursuit that fit well.

I don't think most girls don't wear skirts to be 'sexy'.

blueluce85 · 21/01/2023 20:55

Bizarre that you think trousers are warmer than tights ...tights can come in all thickness and are designed to keep you warm. Bog standard trousers have no additional warmth to them

tealandteal · 21/01/2023 20:59

This thread is very confusing. Tights are designed to keep you warm, and come in a variety of thicknesses. I had the option to wear a skirt but always wore trousers to school. I don’t get the period thing either? Mine were very heavy pre kids and I would always choose trousers.

Greyhave · 21/01/2023 21:03

Would you prefer the school to just shave everyones head, put a boiler suit on the kids and assign them a number instead of a name?

BogRollBOGOF · 21/01/2023 21:37

Skirts/ trousers/ shorts should be options for all.

Forcing an autistic boy into the relentless hot itchiness of ill-fitting trousers is an awful policy. All schools in the area basically have the same option. I can't home-school him. There is zero appropriate option so every day he has to painfully endure ill-fitting trousers that look as smart as a sack of potatoes with the waist yoinked in to the max in order not to fall off. Shorts would be much smarter as I can downsize to get an appropriate waist as length is less critical, and you can't get away with half-mast trousers to get the waist to fit. Shorts as part of a more open policy at primary school did not impair his brain function; infact learning potential is optomised by feeling comfortable.

Options are important because young people are individuals with a large range of body shapes and comfort levels. Single item unform policies are exclusionary and end up looking unkempt because they don't fit half the population.

Ponderingwindow · 21/01/2023 21:49

thick pads plus poorly designed uniform trousers are not a good combination.

skirts are also much easier to alter if you have a child who doesn’t tend to fit well into off-the-rack clothing.

none of the children at my DD’s school will wear coats. She goes to school in skirts and ankle socks on the middle of winter. I have given up. She is old enough to decide if she is cold.
