to be annoyed with my friend

We live in a very small, two up two down, back to back terrace house. Being surrounded on three sides means we can often hear the neighbours - their coughing, love making, arguments, tv etc. It doesn't bother me unduly - it's my opinion that, within reason, you can't ask people to tiptoe round their own home.

Friend who lives in a big detached house came to stay. In the middle of the night she woke me up to say she couldn't sleep because of the neighbour's music. It's true - they do play music at night - but again, I just consider it one of those things. They are a young couple and it was Saturday night around midnight so not unduly late. I told her they'd probably turn it off soon. She said that wasn't good enough and that I was to go round there and demand they turn it down.

I refsused. These are my neighbours with whom I hope to maintain a civil relationship and the noise wasn't that bad. Friend then says if I won't then she will go and spend the night in a hotel, which she promptly did!

I called her in the morning but she did not answer and we have not spoken since. Should I have done as she asked?

Oh, she is horrible! She only had to endure it for one night FFS! Don't call....and if she calls tell her to "feck off"......

MightyMoosh · 05/02/2008 20:55

YANBU! how rude to wake you up, let alone the demands! is she a real friend? Blardy hell what a cheek!

pinkspottywellies · 05/02/2008 20:56

No I think she's being a bit unreasonable. I can appreciate that she was miffed and mentioned it to you but demanding that you go and complain to your neighbours in the middle of the night and then leaving your house, again in the middle of the night, to go to a hotel how bloody rude!

madamez · 05/02/2008 20:56

Has she always been the type who get a stick up her arse at the least thing? Have you always been expected to comply with her whims? Or was she maybe just over tired and having a silly strop (and now won;t talk to you because she's embarrassed).

pooka · 05/02/2008 20:56

No you are not being unreasonable. She was a guest in your house, and was incredibly rude.

No. She was totally unreasonable to expect you to sour your relationship with neighbours that YOU don't actually have a problem with, for the sake of one night of her beauty sleep.

Screw her. Don't phone her!

LuckySalem · 05/02/2008 20:59

Ok... she's just strange!

One night... that's all just one night!!

pinkspottywellies · 05/02/2008 21:00

I hope the people in the next room in her hotel were shagging really loudly all night

BibiThree · 05/02/2008 21:02

She sounds like a bigger pain in the ass than neighbours. Is she used to ordering people to do her bidding and then flouncing when she doesn't get her own way?

ladymariner · 05/02/2008 21:55

How bloody rude, no ya def nbu!!!!!

itsahardknocklife · 05/02/2008 22:09

God her behaviour was shocking so YANBU. She may as well have openly criticised your home. You may well be better off without her.

NoBiggy · 05/02/2008 22:12

She pissed off to a hotel?

Bit of a result I'd say.

What a moo.

ConnorTraceptive · 05/02/2008 22:18

I'm totally intolerant to other people's noise I must admit but I wouldn't dream of doing what you're friend did - what a rude cow!

notalone · 05/02/2008 23:15

YANBU - definitely not. She is only thinking of herself and not the bigger picture. Actually think it was a bit off to wake you in the 1st place. I would have just mentioned it in passing in the morning and certainly not demanded you have it out with them

colditz · 05/02/2008 23:17

Good grief, did she grow up with an Ayah? What a brat!

ChristmasShinySnowflakes · 05/02/2008 23:20

She woke you up?

Oh my!
She should be calling YOU to apologise IMO!
