Maintenance dilemma

I have children with my ex. He doesn’t pay any maintenance, he hasn’t paid a penny in 6 years. I’ve been to cms and it’s nil assessment. This is due to him not working or claiming benefits, he instead rents our rooms in his property but doesn’t declare this.

I have never reported him as I don’t think it’s worth it and I’m pretty certain nothing can be done about this (I have zero proof but he admits it verbally to me but denies it in messages.) I don’t want to report him as I could face retaliation off him so isn’t worth it. I’ve been told to report him but pretty certain nothing can be done as I’ve asked about this before on here. I believe it’s cash in hand. What would happen,( if anything) if I did report him? I’m not going to get any money by reporting him? Has anyone been in this situation (ex not declaring income) and what was the outcome if you reported? He will 100% know it’s me, he is not stupid and he will guess it’s me so need to be careful about reporting if it won’t change anything.

Report to who? CMS? They can do a review but if there's no trace of the income then I'm not sure there's anything they can do? Did you say he is not even claiming benefits? I guess they could question him on how he supports himself?

Really though I don't think you'll get anything, is it worth the energy?

Exactly what I’m saying, no I was told to report him to hmrc, yet I have no proof of any of it. I was told to report him, it was me that didn’t want to as I don’t see the point.
I manage without his maintenance so don’t really “need” it but of course it would be nice and he should be supporting them but I can’t do anything about it but I was told I should be reporting him.

Ah I see, yes you could anonymously report to HMRC as if he has undeclared income then he obviously won't be paying tax. Without evidence though I'm not sure how far HMRC would take it. They would maybe send a probing letter but after that I don't know if they would bother investigating. Of course he should be paying maintenance but in this case I just don't know if you'll get anything. Maybe a fiver a week if he decides to claim benefits. Shit situation

SpinningFloppa · 20/01/2023 15:38

Yeh that wouldn’t be worth it, I don’t need £5 a week it wouldn’t be worth the potential fall out, well it seems no one has reported their ex for this either Confused

Report to hmrc as he has undeclared income and claiming benefit

Report to the council if you think he is getting single discount, or benefit support for council tax as he shouldn’t be getting the former if he is renting rooms

SpinningFloppa · 20/01/2023 15:56

He is not claiming benefits. It’s nil assessment, so not even benefit payments
