To ask you to help me choose a dog breed?

I’m so conflicted!

We’re in the position now to get a dog but we don’t know what breed to get.

It most be a big dog but with not too much energy, friendly and trustworthy with other animals (such as other dogs and in the countryside) One that will happily stroll for a couple of hours but isn’t climbing the walls wanting to be exercised for hours on end

Any ideas?? Please don’t recommend a Jack Russell - it has to be a big dog

Labrador sounds perfect

LakieLady · 19/01/2023 19:06

Greyhound.

Very chilled and happy with a couple of sprints a day and a comfy sofa the rest of the time.

Not ideal if you have cats or other small furries though.

Although from my experience they do have boundless energy!

Zanatdy · 19/01/2023 19:09

Golden retriever? Not sure if they have less energy than a lab but they are definitely friendly dogs and don’t need as much exercise as a spaniel type dog

Landseer · 19/01/2023 19:10

Golden retriever is a definite possibility but I’m worried they’re too energetic for me

Depends on the lines and also better off getting a rescue past the adolescent stage.

I'm used to border collies so anything seems calm in comparison!

Etinoxaurus · 19/01/2023 19:13

I know you’ve said a big dog, but there are massive advantages of smaller ones.
•smaller poos
•smaller food bills
•when they get old you can help them up and you’re less likely to be bowled over if they’re wobbly. I’d not have a dog I couldn’t carry in an emergency- 15 kg max.
From your requirements a grey hound would be a good match.

SummaLuvin · 19/01/2023 19:14

Why does it have to be a big dog?

Landseer · 19/01/2023 19:16

Has to be a big dog as I’ve grown up with big dogs and don’t like little dogs (well, I like them but I wouldn’t have one)

Whippets are beautiful dogs, NDN has one, she loves walks but also loves to chill out. Would you consider one of those?

dogdaydown · 19/01/2023 19:17

Don't get one of these, although she's just beautiful, but loads of energy!

That is a good idea, although not a big dog?

So you want a big dog to meet your aesthetic preferences. But you don’t seem able (willing) to meet a typical large dogs well being needs?

it makes me sad how snobby many people are about small dogs.

Poodle
Basset hound

Seconded. Our greyhound boy has just been out for an evening wander and is now happily lazing on his huge cushion (he's never been a sofa dog). While I'm working he will just sleep.

People are allowed to like different things, deal with it

Standard poodle is on the list ☺️ No idea what their energy levels are like though

Golden Retrievers are definitely high energy dogs, certainly the ones I have crossed paths with anyway.

I have friends who have whippets who seem to get the best of both worlds with walking/resting and not being overly energetic when relaxing at home.

StillMedusa · 19/01/2023 19:22

I have a Eurasier. Stunningly beautiful and unusual (I'm always being asked what she is!) 25kg so medium/large
Absolutely perfect in the house... toilet trained by 10 weeks, never chewed anything, utterly soppy with her family and amazing with my toddler grandson since he was born (though we have managed the toddler carefully to ensure he never hassled her, now he's 20m she is first to him if he cries). Totally uninterested in anyone else outside the family until she's met them 3 times ...then they are family :)

Loves dogs she knows, goes out with my dog walker and her pack :) But dislikes spaniels for some reason (I think she finds them too in yourface and bouncy) so we avoid those.

They are a breed who grow up.. daft puppies that look like small bears who grow into calm adults. Loves a run through the woods but doesn't need huge walks (and to be honest would probably prefer to be lazy.. she hides if it's raining Grin)

Her only downside is she will chase deer, but that's HER.. most Eurasiers seem to have a low prey drive.

She is literally a perfect family dog. We went to Discover Dogs at Crufts, and I really recommend it.. we found breeds we'd never heard of, inc Eurasiers.. fell in love, spent some time going on breed walks before we were accepted on a waiting list. It's really worth going, as you can discover so many breeds you've never heard of. We got our girl and nearly 4 years on, she;s the best ever!

Landseer · 19/01/2023 19:22

I’ve never really considered a greyhound, I’ve never met one either though

what are they like temperament wise?

Do you get breeders breeding for pets rather than racing?

@SummaLuvin not all large dogs have the same needs.....
