To ask you to help me choose a dog breed?

I’m so conflicted!

We’re in the position now to get a dog but we don’t know what breed to get.

It most be a big dog but with not too much energy, friendly and trustworthy with other animals (such as other dogs and in the countryside) One that will happily stroll for a couple of hours but isn’t climbing the walls wanting to be exercised for hours on end

Any ideas?? Please don’t recommend a Jack Russell - it has to be a big dog

A greyhound. They will take as much or as little exercise as you want to give them. Happy to sleep the rest of the time. Once you socialise them they're happy with most other breeds , good with kids. Only thing that you might need to think about is cats. Once you've had a greyhound you never go back.

Another greyhound vote.

Temperament? Affectionate, loving, lazy, people focussed.

Breeders often have dogs that have never raced due to lack of drive. Ones that have raced are just as fabulous. Ours was retired off the track at 2, he’s now 4 and the biggest cuddle-bug.

Greyhounds are lovely.
The boys can be very large indeed, but usually gentle natured.
Tesco had three In before Christmas collecting for a local Greyhound and Lurcher charity, they were beautifully behaved.

Greyhound Girls are smaller
Very unobtrusive in a house.

airey · 19/01/2023 19:44

Like so many have said , a greyhound/whippet or nice cross of those would be ideal

big, elegant, will fill your heart with joy when they run! But then back to the sofa to doze contentedly for hours. Generally not into chewing stuff etc

a nice cross would be a Bedlington x Whippet or a Poodle x Whippet - shaggier, warmer coat, still long legs, friendly.

Landseer · 19/01/2023 19:45

An idea of the exercise I can provide

1 hour daily during the week
4+ hour countryside on weekends

Dog (no matter the breed) will be trained to the highest level he is capable of also as well as being involved in ringcraft

When I say low energy I don’t mean I want a dog that I don’t have to bother with 😂

But maybe a dog that wouldn’t think the world had ended if we had to take a day off from walking etc

LABRADOR

AlwaysLatte · 19/01/2023 19:47

Our lab loves a long walk but he is also a lazy couch potato. He's 17 months and a English lab rather than American so he's a lot more laid back.

dogdaydown · 19/01/2023 19:17

Don't get one of these, although she's just beautiful, but loads of energy!

😍

AlwaysLatte · 19/01/2023 19:48

Or maybe a Labradoodle?

megablocs · 19/01/2023 19:49

Whippet 100%. I have one and although he’s not huge German shepherd size he’s also not small, at 19kg.

He has a zoomie around, then will happily snuggle up and sleep for the rest of the day.

greyhound otherwise is also good to consider if you wanted a much bigger pooch.

Thehop · 19/01/2023 19:50

A show type cocker spaniel ticks all those boxes if big enough for you.

my male is much bigger than my bitch. fantastic breed. Can't be beaten.

Untitledsquatboulder · 19/01/2023 19:27

Golden retrievers and labradors are both high energy dogs.

Greyhounds are rubbish with cats and anything smallish and furry. Great w people though and don't need loads of exercise.

How about a schnauzer ?

Our boy couldn't be less interested in cats if he tried. Would chase down a rabbit or a squirrel if he had the chance(he's rubbish though and they've spotted him long before he sees them...probably why he was given up at 18 months) but small fluffy dogs are not an issue with him.

Rescue greyhounds are great as the rescues will have done some fostering time to let them get an idea of likes/dislikes, personality etc.

dogdaydown · 19/01/2023 19:38

OP has grown up with large dogs, she's aware of these facts. It's just the high energy she wants to avoid.

As long as big poos are collected!
locally, it’s the mountains of poo from large dogs that are left-
Maybe new owners who can’t face bagging vast Poos.
Smaller dogs are much easier to clear up after- one hand, done!
A ( usually) neat Chipolata , compared to a vast mountain 🏔 .

Bluetrews25 · 19/01/2023 19:52

Bernese Mountain

Great with other animals
Lovely temperament
Like walks but not to excess, and will happily miss a day
Great to snuggle
Drool less than a Newfie
Huge paws
Beautiful markings
Don't bark much
Soft as butter but can look scary as a guard dog charging towards an 'intruder'

(yes, I had one)

whataboutsecondbreakfast · 19/01/2023 19:52

A Bernese Mountain Dog would fit the bill.

Big but not absolutely gigantic.
Energetic enough for long walks but they don't need hours everyday.
Good with other dogs and cats if socialised properly.
They don't drool much either.

I walk one and he is absolutely lovely!

whataboutsecondbreakfast · 19/01/2023 19:52

Ha, x-post with @Bluetrews25 Grin

Bluetrews25 · 19/01/2023 19:54

Great minds @whataboutsecondbreakfast 😃

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 19/01/2023 19:55

Another whippet vote. We have a fox terrier (she’s gorgeous, but grumpy, stubborn and full of character) she would prefer to walk for miles every day. We had to take on a family member’s whippet. She’s gorgeous, cuddly (if bony) warm, super gentle. Happy with an hours mad running or a good trot around the park. Doesn’t bark! Excellent recall. Loves everyone. Doesn’t need bathing or grooming. Down sides-eats and poos like a horse, needy.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 19/01/2023 19:57

Oh yes, loves the cat and the other dog (who tolerates her). But is desperate to catch a squirrel.

oakleaffy · 19/01/2023 19:57

The three big beautifully behaved ex racers at Tesco’s before Christmas
These three now have homes , but plenty more beautiful Greys out there.
Some are fine with cats.
Some have almost zero prey drive, so are given up early on to a rescue.

Unsure33 · 19/01/2023 19:58

Lurcher. Best dog I have ever had .

I don’t know what part of the country you are in but have you considered fostering for a rescue ? There is one I follow on Facebook that has some lovely dogs and it might help you make a decision ? They are called a new leash for life .

Bluetrews25 · 19/01/2023 19:59

Please excuse bad photo.

kerstina · 19/01/2023 20:02

A sprocker ?

Landseer · 19/01/2023 20:02

come to think of it, you never see greyhounds dragging their owners down the street do you? They always seem perfectly behaved

I do love Bernese Mountain dogs, don’t know much about them though so would have to do some research

Greyhound
Whippet
Irish wolfhound/deer hound
Lurcher

Scotty12 · 19/01/2023 20:03

Labrador could be a good choice. Would recommend getting one that is half working lab and half not from working lines….so nice and slim but not quite so super energetic.
