To ask you to help me choose a dog breed?

I’m so conflicted!

We’re in the position now to get a dog but we don’t know what breed to get.

It most be a big dog but with not too much energy, friendly and trustworthy with other animals (such as other dogs and in the countryside) One that will happily stroll for a couple of hours but isn’t climbing the walls wanting to be exercised for hours on end

Any ideas?? Please don’t recommend a Jack Russell - it has to be a big dog

Bouvier des flandres. Absolutely wonderful dogs!

Any bad points to a whippet - they sound perfect?

I used to know someone who had whippets. She reckoned that every time you get a whippet puppy, they somehow suck out part of your brain while you sleep and you get progressively more stupid. This leads you to keep getting more whippets.

At one point, she had 15 whippets and a deerhound. They had to move to a bigger house and got through so much dog food, they kept huge sacks of it in the downstairs shower.

The only real downside to them I can think of is that their skin is quite delicate and they get cut easily if they chase through brambles or rough undergrowth. And if they need an anaesthetic for any reason, they have to have a special one. Something called Rapinovet used to be the anaesthesia of choice for whippets.

This might also apply to greyhounds, as I'd imagine they have similar metabolism.

I have a German shepherd x husky x pomeranian.... she looks exactly like your dog! And after googling them, her nature is just the same. I adore the bones of her 😍

Theroofisonfiyah · 20/01/2023 16:19

Dogue de bordeaux. My girl was Loyal, gentle, liked a good walk but didn't get manic if she didn't one, not reactive, she was a joy

Do not, under any circumstances, get a poodle crossbreed. I have cavapoos (Cavalier x Poodle) and they are high maintenance! I love them both dearly but my god, they're hard work! Non stop barking, prey driven, picky eaters.. 😆🐾🤦🏼

DanePack · 20/01/2023 16:57

A Great Dane would meet your needs. They're not known as lazybones for nothing.
Their lifespan is usually around 12 years.
I wouldn't have anything else, although I love all breeds of dogs.

I always wonder how they manage it when I hear about small dog x large dog.

Ivf apparently 🤣

Wafflington · 20/01/2023 17:53

A greyhound or similar breed sounds like it would suit you, OP.

Ime golden retrievers go either way, they're either incredibly lazy (mine is) or absolutely nuts (in the kindest way possible). Not sure if its just my experience or a real thing, but I find male neutered goldens are way more chilled than females. As much as labradors are beautiful and I love them, every lab I've met has been extremely hyperactive

notafruit · 20/01/2023 18:55

Another vote for Lurchers. They can sleep almost all day and night. They do love a good run out, but mainly they're too tired to do anything much.

Just don’t assume all are “lazy lurchers”.

Mine is gorgeous but is a nightmare! As a puppy she was like a shark on steroids - far more bitey than any other I’ve had!

As an adult dog she has crazy high energy and barks at anything that moves. She is not an easy dog at all.

So many people will smile at her and make a comment about lazy lurchers, and a small part of me wants to punch them 😂

This is why I recommend greyhounds - a much safer option!

Onegingerhead · 20/01/2023 19:09

I’d say Bernese Mountain Dog. Gentle giant it is

It is a living creature not a handbag. Why not get a rescue dog?

What a stupid thing to say

“Breeds” exist for a reason

Old English Mastiff, had a few of them over the years, great with kids and other dogs. Loving and loyal, enjoy a walk but love to sleep and won’t demand hours of playtime. DO NOT buy any dog from a random breeder, you have no idea what you are getting or what it may have been crossed with. Check with breed clubs, registered breeders, exhibitors etc whichever breed of dog you choose, they will be happy to point you in the right direction x

Nigglenaggle · 21/01/2023 10:40

You need a labrador

CohenTree · 21/01/2023 12:24

@CheshireDing Just out of interest... being hounds, do greyhounds howl?
We had a daschund when I was a child and I loved her "singing" voice.

jetadore · 21/01/2023 12:27

You sound a bit clueless about dogs OP, not sure you should be getting one before you know enough to look after it properly.

Willowsslave · 21/01/2023 12:49

A setter wonderful family dogs . Each of the four are different but all are wonderful

WillowKnicks · 21/01/2023 12:52

Bernese Mountain Dog, lovely temperament, certainly big, love walks but low energy indoors.

CheshireDing · 21/01/2023 14:57

CohenTree ours didn’t howl. It’s not something I have heard they are known for tbh

mynamesnotMa · 21/01/2023 15:14

Olde tyme Bulldog medium size adorable loyal cuddly loves every one especially me.
Mixed breed are often healthier and live longer imo
Go to a rescue so many need homes due to Covid-19

Fucknfamily · 21/01/2023 15:44

What about an Old English Sheepdog? Great with children, love a walk but happy to stay in if it's raining from my experience. Very affectionate and love being around humans.

You don't have to keep the long coat if you're not into showing. We've always had the shorn a couple of times a year and they are way more manageable that way.

Have a look at HEROES Rehoming Old English Sheepdogs on Facebook.

😂 jog on

As I’ve said upthread Ive had dogs all my life, have worked and trained many working/pastoral dogs over the years. Now I need something that matches my own energy levels. How exactly does that make me clueless? You sound a bit ridiculous if I’m honest

I think I’m going to go for a show line golden retriever guys. Love the giant breeds but there is just something putting me off and I can’t quite put my finger on it.

I keep coming back to the retriever after looking up other breeds so I think it’s meant to be

Fair enough, just didn’t come across that way in your posts and reactions to people who disagree with you. People who know what they’re talking about usually aren’t so thin skinned.
