WTF … Human hair in bread!

TheRealHousewife · 18/01/2023 20:49

I’m spitting feathers here … recently I've read several articles like This one that details (amongst other vomit inducing stuff) how human hair is processed and added to mass factory produced bread 🤢 🤮🤢🤮🤢🤮🤢🤮🤢 This ‘amino acid’ is to extend shelf life!

AIBU to never buy or feed mass produced bread to my nearest and dearest?

Amino acids are.tiny, tiny molecules that have loads of uses in the body. One is as a building block for proteins. If the hair has been broken down as far as amino acids its really not hair any more.

I think a good analogy would be if someone built a giant sized penis out of lego and then broke it down into its constituent bricks and sent them out into the world. Avoiding amino acids because they used to be in hair is the same as not playing with pink lego bricks in case you get the penis lego. At that stage it's just a lego brick, it doesn't matter that it used to be a part of the lego penis, you can't tell and its pretty much the same as any other brick, its just a brick. Same with the amino acid.

It can be listed as "Flour Treatment Agent" without the e number.

It isn't always from Chinese barbers / shaving rats in sweatshops / pulping chicken feathers etc., there is also at least one synthetic process which produces the product used by Warburtons and a few others that say their bread is OK for vegetarians.

If it's any consolation food is full of additives derived from horrid things, and at least l-cysteine is really quite good for you if you're 'lucky' enough to get any left in your bread after baking

@GaslitlikeaVictorianparlour 😂

This study showed that it isn't derived from human hair, and any derived from human hair is illegal in the EU.

It comes from chicken feathers?! How is that vegetarian! I'm shocked.

yousmellnice · 18/01/2023 21:50

@ConcordeOoter Ah thank you I just saw this one

A pink Lego penis is quite novel actually ... Might give Harold the heads up, heard he was looking for a spare as he's got a dodgy todger 🍆😅

For the poster who queried the date of the initial article I posted. This is a screen shot from todays Apple News app.

Bloody Harold, he gets everywhere. I can't even have a hypothetical giant lego penis without him wanting a bit of it.

GaslitlikeaVictorianparlour · 18/01/2023 22:14

I've just realised that's exactly what Prince William might have written 😂

Interesting 🧐 You’d think the press would better inform themselves. I was thinking of emailing the manufacturers direct under the freedom of information act to clarify what form of L-Cysteine (if any) they use and how/where/origin it is sourced from.

L-Cysteine - E920 This is a flour treatment agent and is a man made chemical produced synthetically. As posted earlier, it is not permitted in this country. These stories crop up in the press every now and again but the press should check their sources more responsibly. The articles say L cysteine MAY be derived from hair , chicken feathers etc. Not that it actually is. It's irresponsible journalism designed to alarm people.

This is probably the most bizarre analogy I’ve ever read.

The Freedom of Information act only applies to the Government and Public Services! It doesn't apply to Hovis or any other company.

TooBigForMyBoots · 18/01/2023 22:52

Doesn't bother me.🤷‍♀️

BeGentlePeeps · 18/01/2023 22:58

Oh my dear sweet baby Jesus- not an amino acid in my bread 🥴

BeGentlePeeps · 18/01/2023 23:09

I suggest if you’re freaked out then make own bread. From your own flour milled between two grindstones in your back yard.. having checked the wheat provenance.

5 % salt (from your salt pond), 1-2% yeast from your fresh yeast supplier (or your own colony) depending on prove time and about 60- 70% hydration from you limestone well or britas filter (if you are comfortable using water from a chemical filter)

Mix, prove, beat down, prove again, bake until ready. Eat within 24hours and then start again.

if you are short on time/ enthusiasm just buy some bread and don’t stress it. Each to their own!

(I buy my bread 90% of the time)

@GaslitlikeaVictorianparlour Fantastic analogy and username btw. Can this become the Penis Lego thread? 😂
