To ask what dc should wear to world book day

worldbook · 18/01/2023 20:10

Dd is in year 2 and has worn princess dresses up until now for world book day.
Do year 2 still wear consumes?
She likes Harry Potter and has a Harry Potter hoodie she could wear or does that seem a bit like we haven't bothered?
Happy to buy a Harry Potter costume but I don't want her to feel silly if others are just in character tops etc.

I hate this
It's become a fancy dress day and nothing to do with the book
More pressure on parents

Smoky1107 · 18/01/2023 20:18

Mine always wore their witches outfits from October and went as the witch from room on the broom

Hellocatshome · 18/01/2023 20:19

What does she want to wear? Plenty of time to stress about what others will be wearing when she is older. If you can't wear what you want when you are in Year 2 when can you?!

worldbook · 18/01/2023 20:21

@Itloggedmeoutagain Agree, you can buy an outfit they'd get a lot of use for the same price as a costume they'll wear once.

There's a whole range at DS's school - from kids who've gone all out (or their parents have, haha) to ones who might just wear a top and bring the book in.
I think your child sounds old enough you can just ask them what they prefer, or if they wanted to do something more than the hoody. A wand is an easy prop to 'make' (literally a stick from the park, you can add glitter if you want) and maybe a stuffed toy as their pet.

blackteaplease · 18/01/2023 20:22

There are loads of costumes you can do without too much effort.
I'm fairly certain dd in y2 was the worst witch in a school pinafore, witches hat and tie. Last year ds went as harry and his bucket full of dinosaurs

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 18/01/2023 20:22

Prince Harry!

Grabbing2023ByTheBalls · 18/01/2023 20:22

Oh god.
When is it?!

Prince Harry!

So a nazi uniform then.

I actually like H and M but if someone gives you an open goal...

blackteaplease · 18/01/2023 20:24

Early March sometime.

worldbook · 18/01/2023 20:28

She'd still fit in her Cinderella and Belle princess dresses but I don't want her to look silly if that's only what the little ones wear.

@worldbook my DD is in year one and is adamant she wants to go as Hagrid 😂😂

Our school do it right up to year 6 but it's optional for the older kids, I'd guess in y2 they would still do it,

She was puff the magic dragon last year and every other girl in her class was a princess I say let them be what they want to be

BudgetBeatrice · 18/01/2023 20:43

I definitely saw year 2 kids in princess dresses when DD was that age (last year). She went as the evil fairy from sleeping beauty last year (so basically maleficent). She just wore an ordinary black dress and we got her a pair of horns and black fairy wings.

You need MN World Book Day Survival Guide scroll down beyond the shop costumes for DIY ideas

Noodledoodledoo · 18/01/2023 20:59

Mine are year 2 and 3 both still planning costumes, first year they have said what they want to wear - one is one of the characters from Diary of a wimpy kid - she is sorting it herself from stuff she has, the other wants to go as a joke book and wants a clown costume - we have some bits so just funky trousers and we are good.

SparkleSpangle · 18/01/2023 21:04

DD is y6 and has always gone all out on WBD. She is very theatrical though. We have done everything from the owl from the owl and the pussy cat to Bottom from A Midsummer Night's Dream. No idea what she'll want this year but given it is the last year of primary school I think it will be BIG!

4thonthe4th · 18/01/2023 21:09

My DCS school always says no princess / marvel dress up.

Granted it does put more pressure on the parents but when DD was your DDS age we had; Alice in wonderland, Pinocchio, the worst witch, various Harry’s & hermiones, various David Williams characters & dotty detective. Can’t remember any others.

Talipesmum · 18/01/2023 21:12

Any favourite books to choose a character from?

Sheharazadnt · 18/01/2023 21:13

A dust jacket

Jesus Christ. Has she even read A Midsummer Night’s Dream?🙄

Your DD is a legend 😂

Dacadactyl · 18/01/2023 21:17

I make absolutely no effort with World Book Day costumes (total PITA if ever there was one) and she would be going in the Harry Potter hoody if she was mine.

Its a mixed bag...up to year 6 in our primary, people have gone to loads to effort on costumes and others take my view of it and put in zero effort.

So do what you think is best and don't worry what anyone else is doing.

LlynTegid · 18/01/2023 21:18

At times when many expect to struggle to pay bills and put food on the table, parents should not be expected to spend money for a one day event on clothes.

So I'd just have your DD wear the Harry Potter hoodie.

(If another parent asks, you could say it is to show support for JK Rowling, if you wish).
