To ask what dc should wear to world book day

Dd is in year 2 and has worn princess dresses up until now for world book day.
Do year 2 still wear consumes?
She likes Harry Potter and has a Harry Potter hoodie she could wear or does that seem a bit like we haven't bothered?
Happy to buy a Harry Potter costume but I don't want her to feel silly if others are just in character tops etc.

My DS19 went as Harry Pitta at the same age
Cloak, wand and pitta bread pinned to him 😁

Mainly cos he baulked at us painting him all over and going as one of the Mr Men
Did that for 5 of 6 years 🤣

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 18/01/2023 21:23

DD is yr4, last year she went as She-Hulk from the comics, purple leggings, purple gilet, green longsleeved tshirt and green face paint.

This year she's going as a crayon from The Day the Crayons Quit. She hasn't picked her colour yet but it will be a home made cone shaped hat made of coloured paper and then leggings and a tshirt in her chosen colour and I'll sew her a tabard to look like the label.

Meredusoleil · 18/01/2023 21:23

There is a teachers' strike planned for that day in my area, so not even sure if the school will be open yet!

TheGriffle · 18/01/2023 21:26

My dd went as Princess pearl from Zog/Zog and the flying doctors one year, doctors coat from her dress up box and a little box with a toy stethoscope etc in. Easy to do and had it all to hand.

Youngest dd (year 1) might go as a skeleton this year so she can re wear her Halloween outfit or if I can find the doctors coat she could also be Princess Pearl like her sister was.

Last year one kid showed up in one of those inflatable T rex costumes. We gets lots of princesses in the younger years and Harry potters/Hermiones in the older years.

pinacoladasandsunshine · 18/01/2023 21:31

DD will be going as mary poppins (year 2) It doesn't have to be expensive. Lots of second hand options on vinted - usually only worn once

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 18/01/2023 21:34

My DH used to get DD clothes from primark or Asda so she was wearing 'normal' clothes but dressed up. Once year she went as Winnie the witch. Another year princess smarty pants. The princess dresses or superhero outfits are just lazy sorry

PumpkinDart · 18/01/2023 21:36

My daughter is adamant she wants to go as Saucepan Man from the Faraway Tree. Any tips on making this costume (short of sticking my pans to her belt) appreciated 😂

Let your daughter go with what she's most comfortable, my eldest is unashamedly herself she was happy to be Stickman in a class full of princesses in reception and this time around when there'll no doubt be a class full of Hermione's she'll be there with her pans 😂

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 18/01/2023 21:36

I mean the ready made ones. There's some brilliant ideas on here

BeyondMyWits · 18/01/2023 21:41

Mine had capes for Halloween, so Harry Potter or Dracula were the usual WBD choices.

When I was a dinner lady we all, one year, wore dressing gowns, messy hair and went as Bridget Jones. The teachers all dressed as Wally... stripy sweatshirt and hat, and did a pic in each classroom for the kids to do as a competition.

MilkshakesBringAllTheCoosToTheYard · 18/01/2023 21:42

My go to costumes for WBD were: normal clothes and a saucepan full of rubbish from the garden, topped off with some jelly worms - George from George's Marvellous Medicine.

Blue pyjamas wrapped round with a bandage and a bandage on head - Mr Bump.

Sunshinealwaysfollowstherainstorm · 18/01/2023 21:51

At my dd's school, children can either wear a costume or be in pyjamas and dressing gowns.

I love making WBD costumes if the kids are keen and have def gone all out in the past - but seriously, it’s not “just lazy” to use the “readymade” costumes! Go to the effort if you want to, and have time and money - but it’s just dressing up, many many people have a lot more to worry about or spend their time, energy, headspace or money on than crafting costumes.

HypaHypa · 18/01/2023 21:57

Oh my god! Its coming round again. Whatever mine goes as they don't win. It's the same children every year whose parents start making the costume at Christmas. This year, we'll be joining the ranks of Matilda Wormwoods. At least DD's read the book.

Pascha · 18/01/2023 22:00

Our school always theme it so we aren't given free reign. Tbh, both my boys loathe the whole idea so they usually just take an accessory and wear their own clothes.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 18/01/2023 22:00

Ds once went as Shaggy with a toy Scooby Doo. Green t-shirt & tracky bottoms with messy hair.
Easy to recreate Daphne or Velma with very little cost & t-shirts & skirts they can wear again.
Again just add a toy or inflatable Scooby.

wouldukissafrog · 18/01/2023 23:14

@ISeeTrees Thankyou , I think so too

SparkleSpangle · 19/01/2023 07:54

Yes many times. She has several different children's versions of Shakespeare stories. Why is that strange? Why are you so judgemental?

SparkleSpangle · 19/01/2023 07:55

Andanotherone01 · 18/01/2023 21:15

Jesus Christ. Has she even read A Midsummer Night’s Dream?🙄

DD is y6 and has always gone all out on WBD. She is very theatrical though. We have done everything from the owl from the owl and the pussy cat to Bottom from A Midsummer Night's Dream. No idea what she'll want this year but given it is the last year of primary school I think it will be BIG!

Love it!

Stepuptowardsinfinity · 19/01/2023 09:27

Just don't do what a friend of mine did and sent her DD in as Anne Frank, complete with star of David.

My DS wanted to be Saucepan Man last year. I told him no way! There’d be mayhem in class if he went in covered in pots and pans. 🤣 You could do cardboard cut outs - I should have thought of that last year. Instead he went as Julian from the Famous Five.

OrangePomander · 19/01/2023 09:34

Ds flatly refuses and wears school uniform for this, as well as every other school dress up day. Can’t say I blame him.

FourTeaFallOut · 19/01/2023 09:36

DS is petitioning to go in his usual clothes with a packet of biscuits as a token gesture to a Tom Gates costume. I'm not sure the prop will make it past lunch.

FeltCarrot · 19/01/2023 09:41

God, I used to hate WBD. Most costumes had nothing to do with books. Has anyone read a book about
