Dd is in year 2 and has worn princess dresses up until now for world book day.
Do year 2 still wear consumes?
She likes Harry Potter and has a Harry Potter hoodie she could wear or does that seem a bit like we haven't bothered?
Happy to buy a Harry Potter costume but I don't want her to feel silly if others are just in character tops etc.

Posted too soon…Scooby Doo?

The first year my DS wore a blue long sleeve T-shirt and jogging pants with a bandage from the pound shop wrapped round him. That was Mr Bump

The next year was the same by then out grown T-shirt and last years school trousers with a bit of gold card for a golden ticket, as Charlie Bucket

Y2 was themed 😫 and it had to be a character from their author of the year. I forget who it was but all his characters seemed to be monkeys. I got a red hoody from the charity shop for that one. The teacher looked like he was dressed as one of the village people.

After lockdown the school binned it saying (in as many words) it was a waste of money for people to be buying costumes and they’d be concentrating on actual reading instead.

WandaWonder · 19/01/2023 09:47

I just sent in whatever, no deep thought just whatever was chosen at the time

Hobbesmanc · 19/01/2023 09:48

I'm dying to know how your child went as Julian! I'm guessing shorts and a tank top combined with a pompous and condescending attitude to everyone else. He was never my fave of the five!

HippyChickMama · 19/01/2023 09:49

Dd once went as the house from The Wizard of Oz Grin
I made her a tabard from brick printed fabric and she wore black and white striped tights and red shoes and we made a hat out of card that looked like a roof.
She's also been the crocodile from Peter Pan, Dorothy Gale and Veruca Salt

my policy on WBD has always been that it's never a bought "costume"

>various book characters have adventures in nightwear so pyjamas and dressing down with appropriate props works.

>various book characters wear a standard school uniform with minor additions/props

>my favourite was a Rick Riordan character who just wore ordinary jeans and a plain tshirt, but carried a roman sword

it's not "dress up" day. it's about the books.

Helpwhatwouldyoudonext · 19/01/2023 10:23

Sophie the little girl from The BFG - pjs and dressing gown.
Added specs for extra effort.

My eldest made this her Roald Dahl day costume of choice for five year running in primary.

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 19/01/2023 11:26

Mine enjoy wbd and dd1 did do right through to yr6 last year but we always do as easy a version of their chosen character.

WBD is a possible strike day so I will not be doing anything for dd2 (year 3) until after 1st strike to see if school likely to be open. We've just read the lion the witch and the wardrobe so she tossing up between the white witch, Mrs Beaver & a lion onesie for Aslan!

RenoDakota · 19/01/2023 11:36

Oh, this used to stress me out no end.
But had great success one year when my daughter, now 19, went as Voilet Beauregarde from Charlie and the Chocolate factory. As a big old blueberry.
I am the least craft-y person I know but it was very easy to do - improvised blue round suit and blue facepaint. It was brilliant!

Eatentoomanyroses · 19/01/2023 11:42

Dd went as the Cheshire Cat last year. Our school annoys me because they theme it so you can’t always use the same costume. I secretly enjoy it though but we can just about afford the expense of an outfit. It’s not great if you’re on a budget and not very creative

NeonRaptor · 19/01/2023 11:55

My dd went as the Fairytale hairdresser last year. - jeans, boots and top we already had as well as a little tin of pretend hairdressing bits- I printed out the front cover of the book and stuck it on the tin. The only coat was some pink hairspray to dye her hair.

Previous book days were lockdown so not much else experience but I'd like to go down the homemade minimal cost route if i can and would prefer it to be actually related to a book dd has read or enjoyed.

nokidshere · 19/01/2023 14:12

Mine wore jeans & t shirt and went as 'Charlie cook' for every single WBD

Patchworksack · 19/01/2023 14:37

Sheharazadnt · 18/01/2023 21:13

A dust jacket

@Sheharazadnt I spat out my tea 😆

Patchworksack · 19/01/2023 14:41

Our school dress up right through to Y6 with varying degrees of enthusiasm. My son went as Tom Gates one year and we ‘dyed’ his hair black with hair chalk. Then it rained…..

At my son's school they don't allow Princess/Superhero costumes for WBD.

The HT doesn't ask kids to dress up, either and I love her for it.

@worldbook my DD is in year one and is adamant she wants to go as Hagrid 😂😂

Our school do it right up to year 6 but it's optional for the older kids, I'd guess in y2 they would still do it,

She was puff the magic dragon last year and every other girl in her class was a princess I say let them be what they want to be

Your daughter sounds amazing!

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 18/01/2023 20:22

Prince Harry!

Genius

gogohmm · 19/01/2023 15:25

Another vote for a witch. Dd used to go as the worst witch every year- school uniform and a witch hat plus her fluffy cat toy.

HerRoyalNotness · 19/01/2023 15:26

We did Rosie revere engineer this year.

white dress then fabric glued along hem red and blue alternating ribbons. Red scarf for hair. She had red shoes she wore too. Quite easy to do

Stompythedinosaur · 19/01/2023 15:33

My dc dressed up all through primary school, though a few dc stopped around y5-6 (most kids were dressed up though).

My dc wouldn't have wanted to dress as Disney princesses at that age. Harry Potter was pretty popular, but mainly they chose favourite characters from whatever they were reading.

My daughter is adamant she wants to go as Saucepan Man from the Faraway Tree. Any tips on making this costume (short of sticking my pans to her belt) appreciated 😂

Let your daughter go with what she's most comfortable, my eldest is unashamedly herself she was happy to be Stickman in a class full of princesses in reception and this time around when there'll no doubt be a class full of Hermione's she'll be there with her pans 😂

Could you make pans out of tin foil and cardboard? Then they will be light enough to attach to clothes such as leggings and a tight top? X

emmathedilemma · 19/01/2023 16:07

I'd wear the Harry Potter hoody rather than buy something special for the day.

Idtotallybangdreamoftheendlessnotgonnalie · 24/01/2023 14:39

My year 1 is going as the jolly postman this year. Yellow polo shirt, dad's tie, brothers flat cap, mum's satchel, navy leggings/cardigan.
