To want to sit my own living room of an evening?

FiloPastri · 18/01/2023 19:15

I wfh, in the bedroom, as DH and I live in a small flat.
He goes out to work 4 days a week and when he comes home he likes to sit in the (small) living room on his laptop listening to YouTube videos.
I want to watch tv in the living room, however, I can't hear it over his bloody videos on his laptop.

He thinks this is perfectly reasonable and I should go and watch tv in the bedroom (which I've been working in all day.)

We do have other hobbies and things we do in the evening but it would be nice to be able to watch tv in my own living room in the evening every now and then. Aibu?

He’s a dick OP.

He’s just a selfish little douchebag who will always put himself first.

Of an evening means something slightly different to me. Of an evening makes what your doing because it is evening. In the evening means you are doing something and it just happens to be evening (as the passing of time) that is probably not explained very well.

Do you want to spend time together?

Subtitles?

It is so depressing how many women choose to waste their lives with selfish, inconsiderate, insufferable twats.

Weddi · 18/01/2023 22:38

He can watch YouTube anywhere, even in the bathroom if he wanted to. He definitely doesn’t need to sit watching it right next to you when you want to watch something else. He’s being a selfish git. He needs to either move rooms or use headphones.

mrsfollowill · 18/01/2023 22:38

I think he is being selfish O/P. There are 3 adults here- DH and I and our young adult DS. We all sit in the communal lounge in the evenings- TV is on generally - there are some programmes we all watch together and some one or more of us will 'wander off' and go on their phone/tablet/laptop - always use headphones or earbuds when on a device- basic manners and consideration.

My husband has headphones for his YouTube watching while I'm watching Doc Martin or something on the tv in the same room
Your bloke is thoughtless and selfish.

Sorry, yes, English is not my first language, so maybe "of an evening" is old fashioned or wrong 🤣 I should have said "in the evening."

It's perfectly acceptable English.

mtc2206 · 18/01/2023 22:47

Your husband sounds awful. It’s completely reasonable to want to watch TV in your living room at night.

Getthefiregoing · 18/01/2023 22:48

I don't think either of you is wrong. You live in a small flat. You're both entitled to sit wherever you want in your own home and watch what you want to watch.

Someone needs to wear headphones. It doesn't matter who.

Fullyhuman · 18/01/2023 21:52

I’d hide his laptop.

’of an evening’ isn’t dated imo, and I do think it’s regional - I am from NW England and now live in the SE and hear it more when back home.

I agree. Hide it to “keep it safe” 😉

You WFH in the living room then move to the bedroom? Assuming there's a TV in there, that would give you a change of scene for 4 days.

Otherwise yes arse and yes headphones...

Agree with this. Plus doesn’t sound like you do much together at home

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with saying “of an evening”. You used it correctly.
I would turn the to up as loud as possible. He is being unreasonable.

PinkSyCo · 18/01/2023 23:04

Could you not work in the living room or wear headphones yourself? If not could you wear headphones yourself or you could just take turns in who gets use of the living room in the evenings. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I love "of an evening", it's beautiful, very slightly poetic, english. Don't stop using it!

ThereIbledit · 18/01/2023 23:09

I take it you have explained to him that you spend all day working in the bedroom so would like to relax in the living room? What has he said in response to that?

He's being a selfish arse. There are an almost infinite number of styles of headphones, they won't all hurt his delicate little lug holes. Headphones aside, he is just being selfish about the living room.

Yfory · 18/01/2023 23:10

"of an evening" is fine op - I cant remember if is a perfectly correct non dialect phrase or a dialect form but either way its correct. Whoever commented negatively clearly doesnt know the English language as well as they thought they did.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 18/01/2023 23:11

Of an evening is perfectly normal English. I wouldn’t even say it was any particular region, just one way of expressing the time of day.

I think taking turns is fair. Although it does seem more normal to me that the person watching the actual television gets the sitting room, even if there’s on upstairs too.

Or can you have your desk in the living room? I wouldn’t want a desk in my bedroom personally.

Coward that I am, I actually stopped myself typing ‘of an evening’ on my post because it was apparent that OP had had a wrist slap for it. 🤣

PriamFarrl · 18/01/2023 23:23

Nothing wrong with ‘of an evening’.

I can kind of see both sides to the argument. It’s a tough one, but someone is going to end up wearing headphones.

Second thread I’ve clicked on tonight which is essentially “selfish man is eyewateringly selfish. AIBU for not attending to his every whim?”

Unbelievably selfish.

What an absolute arse.

Dump and don't look back.

"Of an evening" is lovely, I hope you keep using it.

Find a compromise. If that's impossible, consider the power dynamic in your relationship.

Doodar · 18/01/2023 23:44

I love of an evening, don’t apologise.
get a rota for the sitting room. He’s a selfish CF.
