To want to sit my own living room of an evening?

FiloPastri · 18/01/2023 19:15

I wfh, in the bedroom, as DH and I live in a small flat.
He goes out to work 4 days a week and when he comes home he likes to sit in the (small) living room on his laptop listening to YouTube videos.
I want to watch tv in the living room, however, I can't hear it over his bloody videos on his laptop.

He thinks this is perfectly reasonable and I should go and watch tv in the bedroom (which I've been working in all day.)

We do have other hobbies and things we do in the evening but it would be nice to be able to watch tv in my own living room in the evening every now and then. Aibu?

He doesn't even like you, why are you still married to him?

Love how the BF is selfish, when the OP is at home all day and he comes in and can’t even watch his pissing laptop in peace.

YABU

Haha! Hello OP’s BF. 👋

Ltb

Can you wear headphones then? Noise cancelling ones

slowtomato · 18/01/2023 20:05

I expect he wants to your company and also to watch his videos. Is he the selfish type who would play video games with you sitting there twiddling your thumbs?

Want2beme · 18/01/2023 20:07

I think it's assumed that the living room is a shared space. Someone being loud in this space IBU. I wouldn't want to hear what someone else is watching.

Circumferences · 18/01/2023 20:07

Where are you from, by the way, hope you don't mind me asking, but you say "of an evening" rather than "in the evening".

Sleepwalkingintothewall · 18/01/2023 20:10

My dh does this, listens to some tinny videos of a man talking about pretend football (football manager). I don't watch TV as I'm working but I ended up pulling out the modem 'by mistake' to shut it up.

Covetthee · 18/01/2023 20:11

He is selfish for not considering you.

If he insists on being this selfish, depending On your tv, could you get yourself some noise cancelling headphones instead? I sometimes watch a film or something like this in bed when husband wants to sleep.

He won't wear headphones as he says they're annoying. Sorry I should have put that in the OP.

The cheek of it!

One of us will always put our earphones in, usually whoever’s playing the most obnoxious sounds (him).

AndyWarholsPiehole · 18/01/2023 20:26

I could not be with such a selfish person. He sounds like he doesn't even like you.

Deathbyfluffy · 18/01/2023 20:29

Can’t you wear headphones?
A lot of smart TVs have built in Bluetooth.

He doesn’t sound particularly great, though!

pelargoniums · 18/01/2023 20:31

Can you turn the Wi-Fi off so all his videos buffer endlessly. Or change the password and when he asks for it the new one is watchyourlaptopinthebedroomffs

LightSpeeds · 18/01/2023 20:33

Get headphones for the TV

grumpycow1 · 18/01/2023 20:36

Rota for the living room. He watches in the bedroom every other night and vice versa. Doesn’t sound like a very good relationship for you, to be fair though 😬

Phenolet · 18/01/2023 20:37

He is really selfish, considering you've been cooped up in the bedroom working all day. You deserve a change of scenery to relax in the evenings. Have you calmly explained this to him and asked for some consideration?

I like the suggestion of putting the volume up each time but I would actually be quite sad that it had come to passive aggressive actions, and would be thinking about how little he appears to value you

Language nerd here - I don’t think it’s regional, it’s just a bit of a dated way of saying it, comes from Old English. Something my gran would say but I do sometimes catch myself saying it!

userxx · 18/01/2023 20:40

Sony headphones WCH 500 are cheap and decent. If your tv has Bluetooth it will hook up.

CrapBucket · 18/01/2023 20:41

Urgh I hate him.

You could start watching the same or similar videos but slightly louder and make sure you comment as it goes along.

IClaudine · 18/01/2023 20:42

Don't have children with him, for gawd's sake. What a selfish arse.

gamerchick · 18/01/2023 20:43

Brefugee · 18/01/2023 19:17

Just put the TV on. Loud. Louder. Loudest.

I would have this battle tbh.

Glorianna · 18/01/2023 21:00

Do not marry or have kids with this man. His selfishness will ruin you.

But he can... In the bedroom. Or... With headphones.

Summerfun54321 · 18/01/2023 21:10

Are you both just watching screens at home separately every single night? One easy solution would be for one of you to get a social life or some hobbies.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 18/01/2023 21:10

He is being selfish and he should go to the bedroom as that is the tv room and you have been stuck in the bedroom all day. Tell him headphones or bedroom. Why is he the boss and being so stubborn.
